Cruiser Perfection? New 2022 Indian Chief Dark Horse Review! 

Decent looking, but my preference in the Indian range is the FTR 1200. One of the nicest looking bikes around, especially with the red frame.

Honest report: first i saw the scout bobber i just feel this is the most beautiful bike ever, especially when its coming to a little bit customizing. But unfortanately i was a lil bit too big for this. So my eyes went on the low rider s and then the chief dark horse came out. I was driving 2 hours to the next indian AND harley dealer in germany and want to give both a try. Now people: i was sitting first on the chief and ride it for about 30minutes…after that i dont even think about riding the low rider s because it just feels like a plastic bike for me and i dont like the Instruments at all in comparison. I was smiling the whole ride on the dark horse talking to myself: yeaaaaaahaaaaa this is iiiiiiit. Still all my friends are riding all kind of harleys but even 1 year later: i love this bike! Sometimes i feelto be the only one in some kind of ways but i guess this is even more special about it. Have fun and stay safe

Great review! I love my FTR but if I was looking at a cruiser, this is the one I'd get. Indian knocked the ball out the park here.

While I like the new Chiefs, I'll stick with my stunning 2019 Indian Springfield in gray and burgundy with the bathtub mudguards (valanced fenders). Cruiser heaven, all day, every day.

I test road this, but own a springfield. indian did a great job of shrinking the new frame. new chief is lighter more nimble than a stripped springfield. its a great cruiser platform, if you want a cruiser.

It's a handsom beast. Cleaner looking than Harley's bikes and so more suited to my taste.

Another great review, though I have to say...you're making my life difficult over here. I'm planning to upgrade from my Rebel 500 this coming spring and I've currently got my eye on the Chief and the Speed Twin, which are anything but "Apples to Apples" but I like them both for different reasons and I'm totally torn on which way to go! I've ridden a few of the Indian Chief offerings at a Demo Day, they're a TON of fun but I did have some concerns about comfort and finding the right Control Location/Handle Bar Setup. I've sat on the Speed Twin (no demo bike near me unfortunately) and it feels very comfortable and somehow similar to the position on my Rebel...even though I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be more of an aggressive riding stance.

Beautiful machine and it must have loads of character with the motor. Fit and finish looks top rate.

I’m more of a fan of analog gauges, but I have to say I do like the electronics on the Chief. It seems like there’s a screen option for speed where there’s a white background. Very tasteful.

Love the cylinder head design on the bikes. Vlogger I follow in Australia has just picked up one siege brush green. I like the west coast influence on the Chief Sport.

Thank you for this. I have a taste for naked bikes, and this one looks lovely. It is a bike. The trouble is the price, as such really causes one to look elsewhere as well, before deciding.

Why do you need the tech to listen to music or answer your phone?Defeats the point in riding a motorcycle.

This is an absolutely beautiful cruiser motorcycle. Built by Patriotic Americans and not subbed out the the far east. Quality motorcycles built by proud Americans. Some manufacturers could take lessons from Indian.

Just in the process of trading in my chief, it's a nice bike to ride but that's where it ends, the build quality is bad, the ride isn't that good and the tft screen is useless in the sunshine, after the first wash the indicators started spinning round the forks with no way of tightening them , also the indicator wiring kept on popping out the connector inside the headlight which was a fiddle to get back in, for a new bike at that sort of money I didn't expect such cheap design or materials, unfortunately have lost more than 2 grand in a trade in, lesson learnt!

This may be of minority interest but could you ride an XV1900 (big yam air cooled push rod cruiser from early 2000s?) I just wonder if there is much difference between it and modern big cruisers as the performance figures seem similar.

Currently ride the Scout Bobber 20. My next ride will definitely be the Chief Bobber Darkhorse.

I think you should make it clear to the viewers that the original Indian Company 100 years ago is not the same company now. Polaris did not have a 100 years to develop their cruisers. But the review was very informative and enlightening.

Excellent review, Cylinder switch off is a very good feature it is implemented on the Ducati v4s

The buttons and the module that holds them on the bars looks pretty cheap and bulky for having that nice TFT. And for me the wheels would have to be changed but other than that it’s not a bad looking bike at all.

Just got my first harley. I have always prefered foreign bikes. I am needing a smaller bike in the semi near future. The Indian seems to have some really good features I was not expecting. Am thinking that harley is what I always figured it was. Also think that the Indian is much better especially for the price. 👍🏻

I’m curious what the gearbox is like. Test rode a Scout Bobber this weekend @ TX Motor Speedway and hated it. Wasn’t notchy at all, but I really enjoyed the torque. Hated that god awful stock seat too, going 70+ on the highway I was holding on for dear life..

Not a cruiser boy BUT... that looks interesting, definitely worth a test ride largely down to a top review 😏👌👍 Torque numbers V attractive. I know Indian big on aftermarket, can look it up but is there pillion option u can add 🤔

You absolutely get used to the cruise control buttons. I adapted and now its intuitive.

i wonder why they did away with the mono shock ? I had a Springfield Dark Horse and the ride was incredible compared to my dual shock Harley.....

It absolutely KILLS me when reviewers look to tech as a plus. It’s not a plus it’s a way to squeeze more money out of you without improving the bike itself. I don’t need more things to fail I need a bike that looks good sounds good and rides good. The dash from the street bob is perfect it is the most techy my bike should get.

I notice they have got rid of the alloy frame about time as they would snap the yoke clean off .

Is this bike geared tall enough? A problem with most motorcycles is that you're always searching for another gear because they are geared to cruise at 55mph, not 80mph. In the U.S., the Interstate is 80mph.

Nice looking beast but I'm not as keen as yourself and others on the "battleship grey" paint job but whatever floats your boat I guess. Gonna have to give this a try over the Kent/Sussex/Surrey hills one day as I'm heading towards that age where having a beer & pies made "bay window" (larger stomach) is mandatory. A head to head with the HD Fat Bob/Triumph Speedmaster or even the lesser spotted Moto Guzzi Audace (stopped selling them in the UK I think) would be interesting but could I prise myself from my SD GT over this......🤔?

The Darkhorse is not at the bottom on the new Chief series. The Chief ABS is.

2:15 Using both front and rear brakes on a motorcycle (or any vehicle, for that matter) is a matter of mandate. It should not require some change, any "adapting your riding style". This is noob/rookie thinking.

It’s a nice machine but shouldn’t be compared to cruisers as this is more of a cruise for a hour or two and come home, as a cruiser has the highway pegs to rest your feet on and can lean back and go on a long road trip.

Ok I don't get the LED indicator issue with the US. I swear there are Japanese bikes that sell in the US with LED indicators. So does anyone know what the issue is with certain Euro brands like KTM (and others) not being able to sell their bikes with LED indicators in the US? Is it a brand-specific issue?

Actually the dark horse is not the lowest priced chief, at least not in the states.

Not normally one for american cruisers, but i like this one. But at 16k, that's way too much for a bike in this catagory.

Having ridden both the new Chief and several Softail models. Harley still does cruiser better. The Chief feels cheap, the fit and finish is lacking, and the fueling is nowhere near as smooth as most M8 Harleys. The 116 has a little more grunt than the 114 M8, but I wouldn't call any of these bikes underpowered for their intended use. And this is coming from a non-cruiser guy, and definitely not a fanboi for either brand.

How does a bike with 162nm and six gears manage to be doing 2500rpm at 70mph?! You'd think that'd be 4th gear or something. Seems like the gear ratio's don't make use of the engine they're paired to. This thing should be chugging along at 1500-1750rpm at 70mph, especially when it only revs to 5000rpm

The only problem I have with this chief is the prices and all of Indians performance parts.. People bashed Harley for years saying they are expensive. Indian chief is more expensive and you get less in return.. Unless you value that 4inch touch screen.. my reality it’s just arbitrary as my $1,000 phone.. Indian is charging $500 for a stage 1 air cleaner and $999 for their stage 1 slip ons.. it’s very silly.. Harley actually has the upper hand.. in aftermarket and performance
