regarding the temperature during the Rhine Gorge portion, it seems cold even in late May because there's always a wind. When there's no ambient wind, there's a wind chill from the speed of the boat, alone. When there is a headwind, add that to the ship's speed and things get VERY cold! All in all, it's worth it!
We went to cologne cathedral just after my dad passed away, he was meant to go on the river cruise, i went with my mum, we took red roses and one of the Padres took them from us, put them in water and placed them on the altar and said a prayer, it was really emotional but amazing!
Best part of the Rhine. We were on Scenic Jade in late October 2016. It was T-shirt weather at times, and cold at times. Cologne was our favourite, especially the beer in the little glasses! And the cathedral and Roman road! And the perfume shopping!
Wonderful river cruise, Carole and Paul, especially the view from your cabin window as your ship sailed along, the scenery is gorgeous. I once had a holiday in one of these small towns, and always envied the river cruisers sailing by. Looking forward to the next episode.
I have booked my 4th Avalon for 2023. Our first trip was in a cabin down the end of the 200's, it was abit noisy and when the engines were starting up if you were docked, the diesel smell was terrible. Ever since we have booked 307 or thereabouts. Funny thing, I also discovered the omelette station and pretty much had one every breakfast, they are fabulous. Im really enjoying your vlog as this is the trip I will do September 2023.
#AustraliaRepresent 🇦🇺 woohoo!!! Wonderful episode & footage of laying in bed watching the river go by was so beautiful….you’ve sold it 5 times over for me!!!
I don't think I'd have enough fortitude to cruise in October. The older I get, the colder I get. Cruising is great if my teeth aren't chattering. I suppose I could pack arctic wear. Fur-lined everything!!!! Glad you're having fun! Cologne is a beautiful cathedral. The last time I was there they'd discovered Roman ruins while digging up something...the foundation, the street, something or other. Quite a surprise!
I cruised on the Amadeus Star in 2019 for a Xmas markets cruise. We were also in cabin 230 on our ship, I noticed the engine noise/vibration for the 1st night but slept beautifully after that. Can’t wait to to cruise again with plans to do Budapest to Amsterdam in 2024.
My parents lived in Germany after WW11 as they were stationed there, they came home in 1949. Took my mum a long time to to revisit Cologne and other German cities and see them rebuilt. They had a German maid who was living in the basement of a building as did most of German people at that time.
We don't remember specifics as two years ago but do remember they did have good selection for those with dietary needs. Also sure if you asked for them they would sort it out for you. Avalon were fabulous!
