Mehmed II seemed pretty intelligent. That was pretty compelling: "If you're the sultan, come lead your armies. If I am the sultan, I command you to come lead my armies..." What was the story with the cannon maker who built the cannons that took down the Theodosian walls? Something like he offered his services to the Hungarians (or he _was_ a Hungarian) and they turned him down but Mehmed II accepted. I wonder how different history would have been if someone else would have hired the cannon maker... And it's crazy how many stories there are like this in history - an older, experienced commander gives an order that, if followed, would almost definitely lead to a victory but a younger, inexperienced commander - often in a higher position of power like a king or prince - with a hot head and wanting glory for themselves, defy the order, fall into a position or trap that the older commander expected and that leads to a major loss and often the entire army being wiped out. It's like, even if you significantly outrank them, if they have vastly more experience than you, you might want to listen to them. Like how lieutenants fresh out of college will often listen to the advice of sergeants who have worked their way up even though they outrank them. Pretty common-sensical.

Although defeated in the battle of Varna in 1444 and in the second battle of Kosovo in 1448, his successful "Long Campaign" across the Balkan Mountains in 1443-44 and defence of Belgrade (Nándorfehérvár) in 1456, against troops led personally by the Sultan established his reputation as a great general. (Wikipedia) Didn't know he fought in the Battle of Varna, 'cause they don't teach proper history in school. Too bad , if they just listen to him. Great video.

Ottoman Empire was the absolute power in the 15th,,16th & 17th centuries .Greatest Muslim Empire for a reason.Fighting Many countries at same time and defeating every single of them every time tells volumes about their dominance.

So called "Mehmed's letter to his father" is controversial. It was initially mentioned in early 1800s and haven't been found in the archives (yet).

My grandma says that during the 1980s when she went on vacation in Varna, she saw hundreds of polish people. But she was surprised they weren't going to the beach, instead they were going to churches in the neighbourhood called "Vladislavovo", named after Vladislav III. They were coming here with their Polski Fiats and Polonezes pulling caravans, i guess to stay here atleast a month.
