Most people set goals, make a new year's resolution, start with great motivation... and then abandon those goals pretty soon after.
One key reason for this is the goal setting itself. Or rather, the goal FOCUS. Focusing on goals can actually make you less likely to reach them. If you become process oriented and start treating your business like a game, it can make all the difference.

RU-vid should create some kind of "Megalike" button (or something like that) so videos like this with so much valuable information rank better and allow people looking for real advice to get informed properly. (It's a shame that youtube ranks too many useless & bullshxxx videos). I'm looking to save some money to invest in your productivity course. Like the other products I've purchased from you ad your team (Coursecraft & SEO for Solopreneurs), I'm 100% sure this will help a lot also in my entrepreneurial journey. Thanks, Shane! Keep the awesome work!

Every authentic, honest and successful entrepreneur, who I follow on social media, has said this time and time again. Self-awareness is everything. Clarity is power. Until a couple of months ago I didn't really understand what that meant, or more specifically how to get to this so called clarity. Then I got myself a mentor for, get this, sales oriented approach for growing my company. Guess how he started his first week's lecture. With something called IKIGAI and some simple exercises for better understanding yourself. Needless to say that changed the game for me A LOT. I've been trying to be an entrepreneur and grow my agency for years, while at the same time get in shape and better my overall health. Unsuccessfully. Now I can't stop working and this is mostly because I fell in love with the process and have a clear perspective of what I want to do. Guys, get clarity. Everything else falls inline after that. Getting up early, working out, having energy, knowing what to prioritize, being productive, getting rid of toxic clients... know yourself and love the process. "The goal" is only for you to have a direction, a path to follow. The clarity, the process and taking action are the key. And forget the money. Be ready to bring as much value as you can for the people around you and for yourself and expect nothing in return. Plan for the long game. Monetizing your achievement after that is a piece of cake. Cheers, Shane! You've always been an inspiration.

"What game am I playing?" Brilliant, Shane! Such a refreshing take on goal setting compared to all the "hustle and grinding" rhetoric I see everywhere.

Great message! Really resonated with me. It makes me wonder how to enjoy the marketing aspect of my current business as an authorpreneur. In the past, I was extremely successful with other businesses. I simply released product and it sold with minimal marketing. This was both pre- and post-internet. The problem was I hated those businesses, despite how easily they came to me. Now that I'm doing something I love and want to do for the rest of my life, nothing works the way I expect in terms of marketing, and more and more time is taken away from my beloved content creation and funneled into a constantly shifting marketing landscape. It's like an alien planet to me (after all, it's run by robots and algorithms). So I'm process-oriented when it comes to content creation, but I'm goal-oriented when it comes to marketing (and admin, to a lesser extent, but I find that more annoying than soul-sucking because at least it can be done relatively quickly). After listening to your advice, I'm wondering how to make my marketing process-oriented so it's not one endless anxiety attack. Any tips? (BTW, I am not a spreadsheet/numbers guy, but I am an INTJ-T. In Clifton Strength terms, I'm a strategic thinker... once I'm confident in my plan, I have no problem executing.)

I don't know if my advice is applicable to your situation here. But in my case, I've done mainly 2 things to avoid work where I don't enjoy the process. I've teamed up with people who have opposite strengths and I've hired people and/or outsourced parts of the business I don't want to have to personally deal with (e.g. hired a really good bookkeeper and accountant, so my only interaction with paperwork is putting a signature at the bottom of something, every once in a while). There is another option to consider as well: "marketing" is a very broad field and there are countless ways to market a business. You can pick and choose marketing channels and methods that are more aligned with your strengths. For example, I like to create videos, so I do a lot of video marketing. For someone who enjoys writing, content marketing and SEO would be better picks.

Just finished my vision board for 2020 and about to really hone in on my goals. This is a great way to look at things! There are certainly some aspects of the game I don't want to be a part of!

Interesting video because in Focus & Action you critiqued the "follow your passion" ideology, but here you recommend choosing a kind of game that you enjoy playing, which to me is basically saying "follow your passion." But maybe there are some key differences.

LOVE this Shane!!! Perfectly timed! What do you think of systems such as "the 12 week year"? I just finished reading the book and it seems to be a little more process focused in its approach than other goal systems. I also like the emphasis on tracking. Having a system tends to improve my focus, however I've also been guilty of spending too much time/attention on the system itself. Any thoughts? P.S.--Just starting my SEO Sprint! : )
@ActiveGrowth
@ActiveGrowth 4 года назад
I'm not familiar with that particular system. In general, systems can be extremely valuable. But as you already point out, it's important that we do the work and not just waste time away working on the system...
