Crystal River was built in 1974 by The Crown American Corporation, and served as Pittsburgh's 3rd most popular mall falling just under Monroeville and Century III. The mall did extremely well up until the announcement in 1990 about Zayre's liquidation. Zayre later closed along with it's auto center and the building was then acquired by Ames Department Store.
