Crystals can form when a supersaturated liquid that contains a dissolved mineral cools. In this activity, a supersaturated solution was made using water and the powder provided (potentially borax). The water caused the water molecules to move further away from each other so that more of powder could dissolve into the solution. Once the solution reaches a point where it cannot dissolve any more powder, it becomes supersaturated. As the solution cools ( or in our case gets to room temperature) , the water molecules come closer together again causing the forming crystals to cling to the paper structures. Hi Jackie, just wanted to say that YES there ARE flamingos and llamas in the desert! Here in Chile we have them in places called “Salares” that are near the “Altiplano” :) i know is a little weird to imagine, but happens. The atacama desert has a lot of flora and fauna!

Ironically enough, the "crystal powder" in kits like this is usually mostly salt! You can do this at home pretty easily with materials you probably already have, so the price point seems a little steep for these.

I just bought the zen garden version of this for my daughter off of Amazon. It's for her birthday. I'm ready to play with it.....I mean for her to play with it. 😁 Update: She loved the Magical Garden version (Zen Garden). So much fun! There's a tree and cactus. So, you can grow crystals twice. The amount of water is the same for both BUT the amount of crystal powder is different. Makes me think the surface area of the cardboard is why the amount of water is different in the stand alone terrariums.

Jackie, in fact, flamingos do live in deserts. They like salty lakes that are found in high altituds. In my country you can find them. Search for chilean flamingos. 😄

I think what happened with the cactus crystal growing kit was they wanted to capitalize on trendy things. So... cactuses, llamas and flamingos. Do they go together? Not really. But they're all POPULAR. :D
I used to have one of these where is was a singular tree and it would change seasons. Apparently you could reuse it by taking the grown crystals and putting them in new water.

This is almost like an advanced/faster chia pet. I wish they explained the chemistry bc for kids it's actually pretty cool. I would be interested in letting them grow smaller shrubs/greenery or an animal base and seeing the effects of surface area etc. Even letting them drop dye (with understanding placement and color theory) onto the base paper that's white so the crystals grow whatever color you decided. (Yes it would be possible to do, just more expensive) or a base with multiple sections and you measure out the amount of powder from a jar based on the surface area of the item you will place there. Idk. This is a cool starting point but really it could go from cute to super educational in a heartbeat. (I'm a biochemist so that's where my mind went. Also they could have had a stronger base material to support the crystals but thats ok) EDIT (I did chip instead of Chia)

I worked with a brilliant breast cancer surgeon years ago. I once asked her if she would like to have a nice plant for her office, and she said: "Nah. I kill living things." I remember it to this day because it was so incongruous of her, and it cracked me up.

When I was a kid we always got a super mini simple version of this where you made a Christmas tree in out stockings. They were just the dish powder and cut out without the little charms but we used to love setting them up Christmas morning and watching out little 'Trees' grow 😊

@@JacquiMB well since crystallization happens because of evaporation it teeeeeechnically doesn't matter if you over or undersaturate. If you try to grow monocrystalline for technical application(sorry not sure what the English term is , I did my degree in German) you work with a seed crystal. Well that's what we did 20 years ago - gawd I can't believe it's been that long ago :-(

Given how semi-soluable the powder is and how fragile it becomes when it “crystallizes”, I’m inclined to say that it’s most just table salt. It’s pulled along with the water it’s dissolved in through the cardboard fixture, and as the water evaporates it leaves the salts behind, allowing it to reform and solidify into a crystallized form.

There are leftover crystals in the bottom because the water has reached saturation. Meaning the water can only hold so much of the growing powder, once the water is “full” the remaining crystals will not dissolve. Very cool video.
We get these trees every year for Christmas since I was a kid. Now my kids get them. We keep them up on a shelf and they last for years. The single trees can be bought at 5-below here in nj

The fish in the plane didnt drop the conch. They already had the magic conch with them. The plans dropped the load of food after they wish for food (coincidently) The wildlife explorer came thru the bushes with his own conch. Just fyi.
I loved crystal growing kids as a kid and hated it when they fell off the tree. I'd have loved a dome to keep it safe like that. But add a kid I was more patient than now, so liked to watch the crystals grow over 3 days

You can also top up the water using a syringe and carefully add drops of water into the base of the growing card (coral, cactus and tree). Gently shake the base to dissolve more of the undissolved powder which will help more crystals to grow. If you ruin the crystals, just re-dissolve the crystals in water and do the same set up process as per instructions. I remember having to grow my crystal tree several times because moisture in the air from cooking and bathing/showering would wilt and dissolve the already grown crystals. I think those plastic domes you got prevent moisture destroying your crystal art piece.

I love doing these crystal growing kits, their really calming to watch grow and if they work their super nice, and pretty sure the flamingo in the oasis pack is because oasises are supposed to be a pond type thing so its a swimming float
Hey, Jackie! I'm just watch this for the first time and thought I could help with your questioning of the flamingo and the llama in a desert environment, since I do live where these animals are from, the north of Chile (the area also includes Perú, Bolivia, a bit of north of Argentina, and a bit of Ecuador) Both animals are native (at least from what I have always been taught) to the lower part/skirts of Andean mountain ranges. These areas are pretty desert-like. We do have "oasis" and we can get rainstorms and all the higher you go, but in general it's extremely dry. The Atacama Desert is actually the dryest desert in the world. I believe that is the reason why they were in a desert themed kit. Also, it's not a llama, it's an alpaca (also native to here), if you want to check the difference, in stuff like toys and patterns in stationary, they are usually alpacas. Alpacas are way more woolly than llamas, and have curly hair. Llamas have straight hair, and their necks look more like a camel's in the curve they have. Alpacas have more of a straight up neck like the one in the figurine. There was a post on tumblr like, a million years ago, that showed the differences with pictures an all. I will look it up and post a link on a reply to this comment. But yeah, llamas/alpacas and flamingos are pretty good in "desert" areas. And 99% you find a "llama" thing, it's most certainly an alpaca thing

I mean, to be honest, that was parents giving small children kinder eggs and not supervising them, then freaking out when the kid ate the toy prize...due to being an unsupervised toddler.
If you scoop all the crystals up, add water you can do the whole thing again. Eventually the crystals just come out white, and each repeat you have fewer crystals growing.
I really love the fact that you can see the names of things on that box in such far away countries' language like mine, polish 7:45 the package says "Magiczny Proszek", which means Magic Powder.
