Here I go over one element of preparing a piece of pottery for crystalline glaze - the pedestal and catcher. This instructional video covers in detail, how to prepare a piece, join the pedestal, and ready it for firing to ensure a clean separation after the firing. Please contact me at surfsideceramics.com for any specific questions.

Thumbs up, crystals are beautiful, didn't watch this whole video but will be clicking on another @Adam MacMillan vid to find out the meat and potatoes of how those thick beautiful crystals are formed!

Great Video; Those Pale Green Bowls, shown at about time stamp 1:37, and 10:54 time stamps, are two of the most beautiful bowls I have ever seen -- Truly masterful! Well done!

There are basically two formulas people are using. First is approximately 1/3,1/3,1/3 alumina hydrate, wood glue, and water, by volume. Second is the same but substitute EPK for the alumina. I have found that the alumina cleans up easier from my porcelain body and EPK tends to stick. The goal is to get a thin layer of the ceramic in the seam to prevent glaze from seeping through, so you can adjust those ratios to your liking.

Wow amazing video. Thank you for such a great explanation! Do all crystalline glazes need these catch basins?

Sir Adam, really nice teaching lesson, is a bit difficult to listen if mic put close to you is better. Hopefully waiting for next lesson too. Thank for sharing.

Hello Adam, I am French and I watch your videos with great interest to improve my skills in crystallization. I'm a beginner and self-taught and I admit that sometimes it's not easy! There's a video on "catchers" and I didn't understand the part with the refractory brick. My question is: I lay a square of firebrick on a plate, then I lay my piece on that brick. Do I have to put glue between the brick and the piece? Do I have to put some enamel on the brick? Anyway thank you for your videos which are great! Have a nice day Beatrice

Thanks for the video and detailed instructions. Can you please write the ingredients for the binding? Alumina... small particle something I didn’t hear properly, Gorilla Glue - for wood- and water? That’s it?

Adam, what ratio of glue/ alumina/ water do you use? Thank you

I basically do 1:1:1 in a squeeze bottle. The ratio is not very critical, within reason. Depending on the alumina and glue you use, you may need to use more or less water to make it thinner or thicker.

Where do you recommend we get the grinding disk? Nice instruction, too.
