steam normally doesn't care about these scams; but in fact the hacker used steam support to steal the account, so they HAD to take all the responsibilities.
Steam care cuz he is rich almost like out irl they dont care about poor ppl or those who cant afford such items. They only help and care about the ones that spend alot of money and those who are rich
If HFB just fucked up and got his account compromised they wouldn't hold any responsibility, steam support got his account compromised so they need to fix the problem they caused.
One of the reasons why I just cashed out and kept like 3 play skins. The anxiety of randomly getting hacked by some lowlife. I just don't care about it anymore. At the end of the day, they are just some pixels that no one will give a damn about in about 10 years or so. Or worst of all, just getting banned now cause you've bought an item that was scammed off someone.
After 10 years .. I'll give a damn about those pixels . I'll buy all the CSgo skins for a few cents and play with them against bots 😆 . But I'll be 45 at that time so who knows .
Yo if steam takes responsible, they also have to take responsibility for what happens to the skins after the fact. It shouldn't be up to the different marketplaces to refund people legitimately purchasing skins. This ended out somewhat good, but if the marketplaces hadn't stepped up, this would have been a disaster.
@@concensivee That's not what I said. I said don't use 3rd party marketplaces if you aren't willing to accept the risk that comes with it. Steam is only responsible for what happens on Steam. If you decide to send money to someone for skins outside of steam, that's on you, not steam.

Wouldn't a 3 day hold on cashing out funds prevent this on the marketplaces? Since the marketplaces ate the loss this time, I'd expect there to be some kind of change like this.

As a marketplace selling items, you can track all these items, there is ZERO reason you should be able to sell something like the LOWEST float Souv Dragonlore and cashout within a few days. Especially because hacking Steam accounts is pretty common.
hfb said that when the hack happened he still had a mobile authenticator so it must have been steam support. they said it themselves in the support message

The way he got hacked was through a payment processor loophole. Basically that payment processor only needs a steam username to add funds to an account. Hacker added funds to that account. Then they wrote to steam support claiming they lost access to that account and showed a receipt of that payment as "proof."
We do know who HFB is though. There's a reddit post made about it some years ago and the evidence he shoved makes pretty good sense. He's not an arabic prince or whatever, he's Chael Sonnen.

That's funny, on roblox, people with thousands of dollars worth of inventory are targeted by social engineers who get roblox support to give them access to these accounts to steal the items. The first time you can rollback, but every time after that roblox claims no liability. I had a friend who had no way of securing an email which was compromised and was able to be used to comp his account (several times), roblox refused to fix the issue (like removing the email from being able to get into his account) and denied responsibility even though it was their system which had caused thousands of dollars in items to get stolen.
marketplaces are making so much money from a healthy market so its 300iq to refund the market once to keep it active things this size could go diffrent ways
There was no 7day trade ban because his 2FA was still applied, some how the steam support granted the hacker acces to the account without changing 2FA.
Steam really gotta fix this type of shit. I got hacked like 5 months ago. I lost all 40k in skins. I took my military enlistment bonus and spent it all on the skins just for someone to hack into my account. I have some super low floats but the D lore that I lost was a killer for me. Steam say they cant do anything about it
just makes you think how many smaller accounts got hacked since it was indeed on valves side. One of my friends got his account hacked, the dude cheated on his acc and now he is trade banned. Lost about 5k in skins i think. Kinda messed up.
What happens if the guy who was scammed is the main brain that orchestrated all this to double his money? If he has millions to waste in skins, I think he has enough money to contact hackers and put together a plan like this.

I think that the price on rubles which are already severely undervalued are even lower in real life since the exchange value of the ruble is artificially inflated now because of the Russian government's restrictions on foreign currencies. In reality these rubles are worth less. Maybe their value is also inflated on crypto exchanges so it doesn't make that much difference for the hackers but it's still nowhere close reality. Now the ruble is actually higher than what it was before the war which is ridiculous since the sanctions and largely being cut off from the global economy definitely made their economy much worse. With rubles being stronger than before the war. Imported goods should be cheaper now but they clearly aren't because I don't think that many people want to be paid in rubles nowadays, especially not with this exhchange.

I wonder if the market places had insurance to cover the losses, thus the only losers here are the insurance companies (whose entire business model is around paying out funds in scenarios like this)

Damn, it’s good that they dealt with it but at the same time it’s dumb that this account is an exception to the rule with steam support. Crazy rich mf that account is inactive gets actual steam supports, average Joe’s with normal amounts of money be like when they get no support when items or accounts get hacked
Imagine this was done by HFB himself, He knew the whole community would react to him getting hacked which would lead to valves attention and easily generate himself half or more than half of the inventory just like that, idk but imagine 🤯

big W on steam, buff, and the russian market place. W for Sam from steam as well. unfortunate the hacker was able to cash out but at least the items are back to the rightful owner and no one lost money
If you make a mistake its Not okay for Steam to undo the trade because it could harm others but when steam is making a mistake suddenly its okay to harm others i dont get it
