CTA:1990-1991 TMC RTS-08 Review 

No problem and I agree they are apart of history that CTA bus operators and bus enthusiasts will never forget.

@Steven Darkins True especially with the 4400-4539 A lot of the Operators out of North Park mentioned these buses were very sluggish. Most of the 4500,4600,4700, and 4800’s ran alright but there were one or two that didn’t run good.

There’s nothing wrong with your opinion. I had a bad experience with one of these myself on the 145 before lol. Although I do miss them…

@Steven Darkins In the early 2000’s I rode them a lot on 52 Kedzie/California 151 Sheridan,146 Inner Drive,147 Outer drive,87 87th,2 Hyde Park,and 103 west 103rd routes.

@Steven Darkins Those were the days and believe me there’s not one day that goes past that I want to ride a 1990-91 TMC RTS 08 series all over again.

Sweet I loved sitting in the back of those TMC’s and flxibles especially on long routes and listen to them humming down the Streets of Chicago from 2001- Late 2008. Even today I still miss the sounds of them roaming the streets out of both 77th and 103 especially.

@@JGTVideos I rode those buses mainly out of 77th and 103rd as well, I still live in 103rd territory.

@@brandonlightfoot5631 Aw ok I’m in 77th territory and I’ve always loved both models dearly, if CTA decides to not scrap them and puts them up for auction to grab I would grab TMC 4901 out of the boneyard. I’ve seen and been in 4901 personally multiple times and vowed to ask the higher up if I can grab the fella out of there if I can then life’s good

@@JGTVideos I’ve definitely ridden 4901 when it was out of 103rd and it used for the University of Chicago routes as well as some normal routes out of 103rd as well.

@@brandonlightfoot5631 same here last time i rode 4901 was on the 172 in 2005. Ever since then the narrow 4900’s were retired as the little optimas came in.

No Problem Last time I rode one of the TMC’s with no AC but rear window was in 2005 on the 171 UChicago route.

@@JGTVideos I scarcely seen them around Hyde Park during 04 due to always passing through. Hopefully you managed to cover buses delivered in the 80s and 1995 too.

I’ll check all of the old Cta bus videos up here on the internet and see what I can find and no problem I enjoy working on these cool videos and or reviews.

Also has an Orion 1/ 5 sound to it too.

It’s the transmission because it’s a ZF. I’m more accustomed to hear 6V92’s with Allison’s.

At a time there was an option where cta had a few of these without air conditioning

both of them had air starters from the beginning of especially the now preserved TMC 4901. I know for a fact 4901 had a air start in it because not too long ago I started her up with no problems

Gotcha me and Shannon CVPI was talking about 4901 and a little bit about 4550 lately. I do plan on calling up Some folks about 4901. From what I heard at 77th. 4901 isn’t in bad shape at all.

@@JGTVideos Trust me it is, it hasn't been touched since late 2009, the interior is pretty much barren and the electrical components are long gone. Parts are missing among other things, CTA is highly strict about selling anything unless you're main intention is to scrap the bus adding on to that you'll have to get a wrecker to even move the bus which will cost you money because they won't provide it.

@Steven Darkins Apparently so Since Cta didn’t scrap it along with 4687. That’s the bus I’m trying to see about. That’s the only two TMC’s at 77th.

I actually rode 4820 a few times on 87th,79th & 4 Cottage Grove til October 2008. She was mechanically sound especially once you get past 45mph. I remember seeing 4761 on the news when I got home from school and to this day It still sucks that she retired because of the shooting

As I said 4901 is possibly saved by me in May and yea I remember Disney used to have some GMC’s and some TMC’s running around until 2015 They are all gone now but you never know.

@@kl3ztyplays642 Very cool once I get 4901 I’m going to check the tires and compartments to make sure everything works properly. I can grab parts off of either 4687 or 4903 or 04. As of now life is good bro and I appreciate it.

Negative A Private owner owns 4550 as of 2021 CHBM used to own it and lost it but fortunately it is preserved by the new owner which is good. As for 4901 it’s possible I can grab it if there are no legal holds or any additional problems with it due to the fact I’ve seen it in person.

@@JGTVideos Let's hope you get it. I'm in the works myself of obtaining a 1980-81 gmc rts with a Detroit diesel 6v92. From what I'm seeing it used to be part of a limo company until they left it sitting over time. But with an engine like that I bet its salvageable.

I still plan on getting 4901 out of the Boneyard in early May. I’m hopeful that I can grab 4901 out there and be able to fix her up for use in 2023.

Sweet I initially thought all RTS buses in Florida were scrapped but thankfully I now know that there’s a few still remaining.

Yes I officially rescued 4901 from CTA’s 77th street boneyard back in August however she’s still there til June 2022.

True I've always thought that TMC's tend to sound like a fishbowl for some reason, to be honest.

@@JGTVideos Many of the Flxible Metro B's, Orion I's (Pace Bus), and MCI buses used the same engine I think.

@Chuck Johnson a.k.a. Kid Thunder True however to break it down the Flxible Metro E’s and TMC’s came with a ZF transmission the B’s had Allison V731 or a Cummins The Orion I’s both came with a Allison HTB-748 And most MCI’s had the HTB-748 or less depending on the company’s bus configuration.

@@JGTVideos Well I really wish that maybe someday Marta and Miami Dade County transit and Los Angeles county metro transit could make some new tmc rts buses just like the cta Chicago transit authority had those 400 series tmc rts buses before and maybe someday Marta and Miami Dade county and Los Angeles county metro transit could make some new flxible metro b buses just like the wmata had those 8700, 8800, 8900 and 9200 series flxible metro b buses before and just like the cta Chicago transit authority had those 5300 series flxible metro b buses before.

@@marcusbiggs621 That would be amazing to film them in action and if they had the 6v92 and the ZF ecomat 5hp590 I would literally shed a tear because that’s the one sound and bus I haven’t seen or heard in now 13 years in November 2008.

I notice that too the good thing is When the new reviews pop out starting this weekend I’ll double check the video for any additional voiceovers and background noise to prevent any future errors such as this review

I actually didn’t know that until now I’ll have to check out a few videos from NJ transit

I’ll make sure when I pop out new bus reviews that I speak better and slower instead of rushing through it.

Nothing wrong with voicing your opinion however I’ll admit that anytime they went over a pothole which is unavoidable in Chicago it seemed like the bus was gonna fall apart especially on some south and west side routes Aside from the smoke coming from underneath a TMC smacking ya in the face they were somewhat decent.

These busses With the a/c retrofit were extremely slow but you could be doing 35 mph and it sounded like you was doing 100mph
