2019 update version is now available!
Ride the Rails in Real-time: • CTA's Ride the Rails: ...
Ride the Rails in Time-lapse: • CTA's Ride the Rails: ...
The CTA has more than 224 miles of railroad tracks across Chicago and surrounding suburbs, serving the agency's eight rail lines. In an average weekday, there are about 2,200 train trips making stops at the system's 145 rail stations. For more than 100 years, the 'L' has offered a unique perspective of Chicago.
In the first-ever documentation of its kind, the CTA has created a real-time ride along the length of each rail line. Shot in HD, you can now experience the 'L' like never before from the vantage point of the rail operator. You can even transfer between lines.
Hop aboard, and enjoy the ride.

Dear CTA Connections: Very awesome videos of your subway system and making out like I'm in Chicago right now riding the rails. I never been to Chicago and feel like I'm there right now. I am noticing that the areas and stations are so laid back and even downtown seems quiet. Nothing like New York. Even your trains look nice as well as stations. If I ever get the miracle of retirement for the future, think I'd like to live there. I heard it's cheaper living there than NY and I notice the neighborhoods are similar like Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, NY. Once again I commend you for creating these wonderful videos and best wishes to all at the CTA.

trust me you don't. i was at howard station going to the cubs game and these 2 guys were drinking on the train and smoking on the station, and trust me, they weren't cigarettes, and i heard one of them say he had a gun to the other. but if you think about it you can't let 2 people ruin your attitude towards something

You want to see cool trains and rides? Search for the Japanese front views. Really modern, the regular people movers like these, daily commuters. A lot of different styles.Their Air Port busses are really nice.Also, look for the number 7 A train in NY "A" train, a 31 mile trip to downtown.

And I wish they would use the extension tunnels on the blue line. And use that subway station to nowhere. Anew whole line would be awesome! Yes its cheaper to keep building line's and extensions above ground, but lookup at the upkeep. Trash removal, constant rust, rivets, etc. Underground tube much less upkeep. I love Chicago. And please make the Brown line add 2 or 3 stops and make it 24 hours!

For all you non-Chicagoans, at 15:00 is Graceland Cemetery, where many famous, historical figures are "listening" to the noisy train as it passes: these include athletes (boxers Jack Johnson, Bob Fitzsimmons, BearDoug Buffone, Cub Ernie Banks), industrialists (Swift and Armour [meats], Potter Palmer [real estate], Kimball [pianos], Cyrus McCormick [farm tools], politicans (Gov Altgeld), cops (Pinkerton), architects (Mies Van der Rohe, Louis Sullivan), and entertainment figures [film critic Roger Ebert], Charles Dicken's brother, and many others. RIP

One thing to be careful when you watch this. When the train goes underground don't stare too long as it's going through the tunnel. It's really hypnotic. Excellent video by the way!

It's not a good idea, to have each track in it's own tunnel tube. I heard, that this is stress to the drivers.

I remember when this line first came into service in 1969. It was called the "Lake/Dan Ryan"...had skip stops...63rd, and 47th were "A" stops, Garfield was a "B" stop, as was Cermak/Chinatown. First cars used were the green and white 2000 series cars. Really liked those cars...well lit, roomy, smooth ride...not like the 6000 series (still remember the "jolt" when that train started. I started taking this train on a regular basis in 1973 when I was going to high school. I think it was around the time I graduated is when the 2000's were phased out by the 2200's...still good cars, but the steel gray just wasn't pleasing to my eyes!!! Now I drive...many times past the Blue and Red lines. Recently, because of these videos...I went to the Loop, and rode the Brown line to the end. Another time, rode the Brown line tto Fullerton (wasn't about to get off on Belmont...that area has always been crazy!!!) and transferred to Thorndale (rail and restaurant hopping!!!) Hoping to explore the Pink line before the weather gets too cold!!!

And what I really liked about the old cars was...you could open the windows. Even during the hottest summers, and without air conditioning, the rides seemed more enjoyable (perhaps because the adult fare was only $0.25).

So, dumb question. When Block 37 was built, the tunnels and platform were cut for the transfer connection between Red & Blue, which was then mothballed and covered back up, were they not?. Should some signs of the tunnel construction not be visible just south of Lake around the (former) Washington stop, on the right side going southbound (around 38:00)? I see the covered up entrances to the lower level transfer tunnel and the sealed-off Washington-Madison mezzanine, but should there not be a giant patch visible in the tunnel wall where it was cut open and then closed back up? And wasn't the platform sliced and later rebuilt as well?

@Organgrinder1010
@Organgrinder1010 8 лет назад
+Casual Android Are in-cab signals active also in areas where block signals are still in place, like the subway? Can an in-cab equivalent of a red block signal stop the train the way the trip arm can on the older system?
@blue9multimediagroup
@blue9multimediagroup 3 года назад
All lines use cab signalling except at interlockings where there is a home signal to govern movement through the switches. And yes, if you don't stop for a red cab signal or don't reduce your speed to match that what's displayed in the cab, you will get a penalty stop which causes your brakes to be applied and air pressure drop since the brakes are usually electro pneumatic. You won't be able to move until the train is fully stopped and the air builds back up to at least 80PSI. And the control center might call you on the radio to acknowledge it with possible chance of a write-up for a signal violation.

Yes, the station has been modernized, and the outlying, southbound 4th track that was used by the Evanston Express, now runs close next to the Red Line tracks. Unfortunately, the neighborhood (Uptown), hasn't changed, but has even deteriorated (cheap shops, dirty restaurants, homelessness), despite the proximity of the community college [Truman].

When the Dan Ryan portion of the Red line (shown in this video) was constructed in the late 1960s, it was linked to the LAKE STREET elevated branch (West part of the current "Green" line). But over 2 decades later, the Lake Street ridership decreased dramatically, while the Dan Ryan ridership increased. Thus, to "balance" the ridership, the Dan Ryan portion was re-configured with the equally heavy part of the current Red line. Thus, that part you mentioned is used as an "emergency connection", not part of regular service.

@@MegaMoose1989And you raise a good point about how the CTA names its stations. It is a mystery, but I suppose "marketing" has something to do with it. Except for prominent places (McCormick Place, Merchandise Mart, Illinois Medical District, IIT Bronzeville, Harold Washington Library, Conservatory, Rosemont, Loyola) most CTA stations are named after streets: it is assumed that most riders are Chicagoans who know Wrigley field is on Addison, and not out-of-towners. I notice some RU-vid commenters are puzzled how different stations on different lines (or on the same line, like the Blue Line's 2 Harlem stations) can have the same name.

Kind of looks like a ride from an old amusement park that ran out of money to update its equipment (at least the elevated portion). The lack of railings next to the elevated tracks, noisy and shaking train (presumably due to lousy tracks) and exposed cables right next the the side of the track bed do not instill a sense of confidence that this line is well maintained or up-to-date.

i have been on the dan ryan stuck in traffic and seen 4 trains pass me before i reached 95th street. i wished the line kept on going so i could get on it instead of my car. if you get a chance watch Los Angeles green or gold lines and you will see the trains regularly beat the traffic. both are freeway running lines, well the green is most of the way and the gold about halfway. haven't watched metro washingtons silverline yet which is partially built and part of it is freeway running.
