@michaelb9529

@UClACK-uDf0Q3DUlUKZGosMA The Tribals were air defence destroyers originally to escort our last carrier HMCS Bonaventure forming an anti submarine striking group under NATO. In fact against knowledge of the Canadian Govt the Group was requested and sent to Cuba during the Crisis...but that was before the Iroquois were built. The Bonnie was still only at its min-life so it was expected to be around for sometime. just before the new frigates arrived were converted into command destroyers to augment the frigates. If you look at pics she was originally DDH 280 after the transition she became DDG 280

@@BOOMER-rs5qn It said in the video that the commodore of the fleet was promoted to his rank in 2005, so at most the oldest it can be is 17 years old and that's assuming that they filmed this the same year he got promoted which is unlikely. EDIT: Their boarding team leader was assigned to the ship in 2007 so make that 15 years max.

@@billfarley9167 The particular shades of grey used, combined with the light angle, can tend to lend a greenish tinge at distance. A bit of haze can make this even more pronounced. This may actually be deliberate, as the sea tends to lean a bit towards green near the horizon under the same conditions. In modern times, not sure exactly how important this is. Figure radar had your masts painted while you were still hull-down over the horizon. It's not as if we were limited to what some seaman on the bridge wing could see.

For those who are commenting about the current state of the fleet, rest assured that it's changing, though it will take another 10 years do to how long ships take to build. I work for the team responsible for designing the vessels for the Coast Guard, and we have a sister team at DND. After decades of neglect in both fleets, the government finally realized that ships aren't free and that you kinda need them if you want your waterways to be maintained and safe. For the CCG we have about 8 classes of vessel either in concept or being built right now, with probably 20-30 ships planned to be built. In terms of the Navy, from what I know, they have 6 of the 8 Harry DeWolf class offshore patrol vessels on the way (we get the other 2) with 1 already done, and the planned 15 (and possibly 5 modified version for large area air defense, and 2 Coast Guard ships) Canadian Surface Combatant ships, which are Type 26 frigates in essence. It would be nice to get some destroyers, though to be fair, these frigates are not to far off the mark, they are actually bigger than any previous destroyers in the fleet and other than their lack of ballistic offensive armament (not necessary these days with missiles) are functionally destroyers. It's worth mentioning that while I'm involved in the design of some vessels, I do not have any sway over what role the ships are assigned, what projects get created, or what funding is allocated. They simply tell us "Make a ship that can do these things and for this price" and we have to figure out the rest.
@_lime.
@_lime. 3 года назад
@@tylerdalton3267 They came to my university looking for engineering students for Co-op. I guess my interview went well. DND has a lot of similar jobs you can apply for as a civilian, so you don't actually have to join the military. Stuff like designing ships, weapons, vehicles, etc... If ships in particular interest you then the major shipyards are also a good option, they handle a lot of the design process. Davie in Montreal is the biggest, Seaspan is in Vancouver, and then Irving in Halifax. We also work with a lot of private companies, for example Lockheed Martin has a facility in Halifax where they are doing modernization on our Halifax class vessels, or BAE Systems, who make the Type 26 frigate. For any of these things applying as a student or new grad is immensely helpful. They know you're a student so they don't expect you to know everything and generally once you've spent some time there, learned the ropes, and hopefully made a good impression, they'll likely be happy to offer you a job. They've essentially had a trial period to test your skills, so they'll be comfortable taking you on.

I had the honor of taking a tour of the HMCS Calgary in Vancouver B.C. when I was staying at my Grandparents after my father passed away in the 90's. (Still have a keychain! lol) And all who I met were such down to earth people. I later joined the U.S. Navy (July 2000) and was assigned the USS John C. Stennis CVN-74 where the HMCS Vancouver was part of our 'Strike Group'. Sadly that crew was seemingly unfriendly and rigid A.F. in Hawaii when I met many of her crew.. So whats the deal between both vessels? Command? Politics?? Bureaucracies??? I get it, we are all human and are subject to things we'd rather not have to deal with so not attempting to shame anyone, but It was such a polarized difference it makes me wonder to this day. Still! I saw so much from so many Navies around the world it was one hell of an experience. I sure miss it alot. Those were the good days it seemed.

In a nutshell, if you are on deck but are carrying no equipment, you have a CO2 vest that is the same size and shape as the fanny pack some wear around town, while biking or hiking, etc. The more gear that you are required to carry, the bigger the vest gets. When you reach the point where you have a hard hat and a tool belt full of tools, chances are you have a larger vest or are required to have that little "fanny pack" strapped on over the kapok life vest. The OP simply extended this concept to the point of absurdity in order to make a humorous point. @ 33:35 OMG you couldn't have picked a better guy to be the "GamesMaster" of that operation. You can tell he has liquefied Dungeons and Dragons cards flowing through his veins. And do not get him going on his Main Character the Ancient Ent of the Northern Ridge, for he will chill your bones to the core with his tales of conquest and betrayal in that faraway place where the eagles fly! This is all meant in good humor BTW, BLESS Our Troops no matter what. Even if you don't agree with the conflict, don't go against our best and brightest for wanting to serve. Heck, probably some of 'em don't agree with certain aspects of our current military (US/NATO) ops, but they still serve loyally and put faith in the fact that their efforts are for a good reason!

The Persian Gulf, the area around Somalia and the Arabian Sea are probably some of the most dangerous waters in the world! Between drug vessels and pirate vessels, the merchant marines who used to sail these seas safely now must be armed to the hilt against these criminals who work that area full time now. Terrible! We wish them a safe passage.

You probably wouldn't be near enough to any sort of training exercise to hear it well. I mean they have to use sonar to check for sea life in their area before they explode any ordinance, or so I've heard.

@aaronmcintosh2903 2 года назад
@@Sophocles13 Thats true. I was in for 10 yrs on the same ship. Needless to say, during many (most) exercises, our BOFORS didn't work, the missles...well...a number have done their own thing after firing, and our CIWS was predominantly taken apart and in pieces on our quarter deck.
@kevincrosby1760
@kevincrosby1760 Год назад
@@aaronmcintosh2903 Interesting. The only time I ever saw the covers off of CIWS on my ship was for cleaning/checks/reloading after a live-fire exercise. Every Sea Sparrow missile we ever fired went where it was supposed to and functioned properly when it arrived. If this is a persistent problem, it might be time for a hard look at some cross-deck training and getting some Canadians embedded with the US sailors who operate the equipment on a regular basis...Sometimes training manuals and a dude standing behind a podium just aren't enough.

When was this recorded? Because the Captain/Commander aboard the Calgary has been on duty since 1977, along with others dated as joining in the early 80's, but all don't look to be a day over 50yrs old, and a few enlisted in 1990 who look to be in their 30's. This has to have been recorded 15-20yrs ago in the early 2000's, no way it's as recent as 2020. Fine little documentary though.

A Taiwanese mother fishing boat stationed at eastern pacific is used as shabu laboratory. Tuna catch from Taiwanese fishing boat are stored in the mother ship. A reefer feeder ship haul the catch to General Santos sometimes Thailand. Officers are usually Taiwanese. Fisherman are from mainland China. The agent in Manila and General 'Santos is Reefer ship. Port authorities are not allowed to board these ships during Philippine Port calls.
