Good day to you. I agree that the CTX manual is not very detailed, which means you can only use a tiny bit of the real potential of the CTX. But there is very detailed and in depth book explaining most of the features. It's the "CTX 3030 handbook" by Andy Sabisch. I learned a lot from this book and I am quite convinced you will do so too. Happy hunting
Willem Sterk. I understand what you are saying but why should I have to purchase a book written by another person to see how my detector should work? No disrespect to anyone, it just makes me a bit ticked off.
A meaningful test would be to search and flag finds with one machine and then see if the other could detect all or any of the buried finds before digging to see what was missed. I am sure that the deus would have also detected most of the ctx finds on this 'test'.
For me its finds per hour. A sketchy signal is always easy to find when you know its there. Finds per hour and how many hours to can work before you are exhausted. I've another Deus v CTX video up soon. You'll like it.
Get Andy Sabisch's book on the the CTX and his book on the Deus. I've held the CTX + 17" coil and though it does better at IDing deep targets, the Deus is just so beautifully light.
No doubt some people will be blinded enough by fanboyism to hit the thumbs down on this but the deus is the best for skimming so I'd agree it is the king for cultivated land as you can cover the ground so quickly and the response time is lightning fast. If I am searching for shallow targets on ploughed land it is my go-to detector. However... The CTX will find deep targets on pasture and that is its real strength as its not really a skimmer. With the right settings for depth it will pound out the deep silver on pasture like nobody's business. As an all rounder the deus takes some beating but for true pasture hunting (fields which have't been ploughed in hundreds of years) the Minelabs are still at the top of the game. Most of the decent detectors will find 90% of the findable targets but it is the 10% which can make the difference on specific fields (e.g. tiny targets in trashy areas found by deus or deep silver from pasture with the CTX). I'll be interested to see how it performs for you on pasture. GL&HH
+Pondguru Outdoors I like it. quite excited by the river potential with the sniper coil. The big negative is: I'm going to have to start weight training to use it for more than an hour or two. :)
+Pondguru Outdoors What a lot of people tend to overlook is that you can use the CTX in all types of soil. I use it on beaches with black sand underneath (wet and dry), pastures, iron infested playgrounds, in fresh and salt water and in heavy mineralized soil. When using the right settings for the right soil it -sometimes- finds goodies (silver coins, silver rings) at a depth of 30 cm and even more. For me the versatility of the CTX is the main reason for loving it. Even though it has its drawbacks, specially the batterie compartment cover is something to be very careful with.
I know this is an old video but would like to have my input. the deus and ctx are to different machines. you can not compare them. I guarantee that if you did the field with the ctx you would go out and find with the deus. the deus will pick up signals the ctx won't because of its recovery and because of its ability to pick out small targets and the ctx will always go deeper.
SIT ON THE FENCE......AND PLAY WITH YOUR DEUS......

Puff I bet You don´t even know that Hight trash mode is for Low mid and high mineralized soil, ferrous-coin is for low mineralized soil, ground-coin for very high mineralized soil, and low trash is for low and medium mineralized soil, and I bet that You don´t know that noise cancel is not just for canceling noise Lol, it sets the best frequencies for the soil so setting the right separation mode and the right frequencies is a good start, and... You still have to tweak recovery fast, recovery deep and other functions that I bet You don´t even know. By the way, just to let You know, In high trash mode the large silver targets will show up in the uper right corner (only high trash mode). Oh by the way perform the noise cancel laying the coil OVER THE GROUND UNLESS you are gonna search metals in the air then separate the coil LOL. Still got to teach You a lot but... Next time You try to make a review learn how to use the machine! I almost forgot, do You know how to set the target trace pinpoint? You will see up to 3 targets at the same time on the display when they are under the coil, and You say deus is fast? Come on!
Hey Bill, I agree XP Deus over the Minelab. I just recently got a XP Deus and I love it! I been hunting a old colonial homestead site here in Maryland, USA with the top of the line Whites V3i and I thought maybe I cleaned out the site with this machine, WRONG, I started using the XP Deus on this site and Wow! I'm finding more copper coins and things that the conventional detector missed! XP Deus #1
HI Chill Bill Sounds like you require the Minelab Pro swing 45 harness this is a must with the 17 inch coil on the CTX,With the harness the CTX becomes almost weightless,Good luck the CTX it takes time before it reveals all. Luv your stuff dave from down under.
Nice digs, to learn more about the CTX I'd say to watch guys hunting with them in the US as they are really popular over here and used by a lot of hunters. Think I'd still take a Deus over the CTX.
+Detecting Chicago going to do more tests... the big negative is weight on the CTX. Had a great hunt yesterday with the Deus, so will try the CTX again to compare.
You can get a harness to hold those big coils up no worrys,we use them for gold nugget hunting in Western Australia. You can go for a couple of hours at a time if youre keen. lol Theres a plastic Minelab detector out that looks like yours Bill, worth $10,000 Australian Dollars.
Get your mate who normally helps you with the monster one of you finds a target the other one then sees if he can see it AS WELL. re GARRETT and XP, I have an ORX and at 17.2 my orx goes daft when the pinpointer is on have to go up or down one small notch.
Yes I got the feeling it was not a safe £2000 investment. My screen broke and joan Allen replaced the hole machine straght away and then I saw a way out and sold it ! Gutted because I love metel detecting and don't know what to buy next?
+John Davis they are for spinning wool into thread. The spindle-whorl fits over a spindle which is a kind of axel to hold the thread in the spindle and give the spindle weight so it spins well to twist the fiber up.
I will wait for the next detector from Minelab or Whites as the next high end machine Im purchase will have to have the box on your belt instead of on your wrist! Whites and minelab as well as other makers need to start gearing toward making there machines for a waist, belt or backpack to take the weight off the wrist, arm and shoulder! TIME FOR NEW DESIGN'S!
hey chill bill, thinking about getting a Deus as my AT Pro gets heavy swinging in the woods all day. Are there other tones for the Deus, that whiny sound it makes would drive me nuts. sounds squeaky.
The Deus is hugely configurable. I use that setting because as a musician I'm semi deaf and I can hear it very clearly. The other setting have different sounding effects, some quite mild. Its very flexible. I've a link to a Deus rig on Amazon in my description. Its my go to detector for woods and fields. I need all my strength for just getting about. :)
CTX has a deeper reach on accurate numerical target ID. Deus has a deeper tone ID. For example CTX is not going to smack a 14” silver dime. But a Deus will. On the other side of the token, Deus is not going to correctly ID that dime when you get to 10-12” but a CTX will.
will buy the deus from your site if it helps you out, great price. 1 ?, they say my garrett (orange) propointer will make the Deus go nuts. anyway around that?
I have two pinpointers. The very early one is bad but the recent one not so. You can also change the frequency of the Deus, Too deeper seeking frequencies to lessen it. Black Garrett has not problems. The new video uses old Garrett, but you can hear the difference on my other videos with the newer Garrett. I do not change the tuning on the Deus.
had 3 propointers and have a carrot no..never any problem with interference with the deus except the 2 first propointers .. i did a rewire down to the ferite coil.. cables are aligned over a component so it make it interferencing with the deus :) cat want food
+thegrantclan ill try that... Testing them head to gead with default settings currently. Most people arent going to hack their detector, but why not.

hack? @@ChillBill1 not really .. wavingg a machine as close to the ground as possible with best settings .... if not upto picking up siginals after a certain depth .. you wont be missing out .... pepsi challange anyday etrac or ctx... deus are not good wetsand . Hotrocks .. .
Im using the Deus, so that says I think it is the best. The key feature is that the Deus is very light and the CTX feels heavy.. So it is that important practical matter that means I'm using the Deus.
Thanks for the answer, but in a matter of detection, which is the best? Deus ou CTX? I had the E-trac and sold, but I will buy another detector. Thank you!!!
You cant really ever say without taking in the full picture. It depends on the ground and the target. In practice weight is extremely important, as is battery life. for instance Deus is not a good wet sand machine and you would go in the water with it. The CTX is great for that. You would take the Deus on a 5 hour hunt on a field because the CTX would wear you out quickly unless you had some clumsy harness.
Statement "It is a bit plasticy" what does that even mean? It is a metal detector. Were you hoping it would be made of metal? I know some that have metal shafts etc but the CTX has a carbon fiber shaft. Minelab did everything to make it light weight and durable. And it still is a heavier machine. Go design a better one and let me know what you come up with. Because the Deus is in your words "plasicy" as well.
Where I'm from, 'plasticy' means having the attributes of cheap plastic and having a toy like feel and texture through poor design. Minelab's Excalibur is awesome but the CTX3030 is not. Deus is a little plasticy in parts and is also awesome.
you can purchase a field guide for the ctx3030 at www.ctx3030survivalguide.com/ fits in your pocket and has a pouch with a clip check it out or can be purchased at www.seriousdetecting.com/product/minelab-ctx-3030-survival-guide-mini-guide-clip-pouch-zipper-4x6/
Bill, I am not critiquing your physique. I did not know that the CTX came with that heavy arse 17" coil. I thought they came with an 11" coil? Did you not get Andy Sabisch's book with your machine? Ponguru seems to have pretty good luck with his CTX 3030 (in clean fields). I own an Etrac and I can set it up to NOT pay attention to iron targets. Also I can operate it in TTF which has only two sounds, low (iron) and higher (everything else) and I have found coins as deep as 18" for a USA silver half dollar coin. I just didn't think it was a fair assessment of the CTX. You need to sit down with the owner's manual and read it a few times to understand the machine better. I am 67 years old and have no problems swinging my Etrac, plus I just had (two weeks ago) part of my small intestine removed, nasty lil scar. And I do NOT have large bi-ceps. Now, if I were to say that the Deus was not a good machine and the owner's manual was crap and I didn't understand it, and just used the factory settings, I would imagine that I would come away with a not so good review also. My etrac is the same as the CTX , I can hear the same things. But my etrac doesn't have GPS tracking, or fancy schmancy screen colors. And my etrac weighs only about 3 1/2 pounds. If you live close enough to PondGuru go have a swing with him and see how he sets up his CTX. I understand the Deus weighs only 2 lbs. with the control box attached to the handle and coil, 1 lb. with it in your pocket. The Minelab machines always work best "low and slow". Please get to know your CTX better. Larry
No worries Larry. :)I have both coils and the small one. Its still a heavy machine.Meanwhile the Deus is feather light. After a couple of hours, say 2... I'm dead with the CTX but with the Deus I'd just swing on. I used the CTX with discrimination off and dug everything not clearly iron, and I cant see many settings that will make much of a difference to performance. By killing the operators endurance it kills their performance, you dont need to look at the technicals. I'm not wearing a blummin harness for the CTX.I already have more than enough bits and bobs to make videos, without another bit of kit to get in my way.The Deus has more bells and whistles than a runaway train and you can ping between them in a moment. The lightness is so important especially for us mature users.CTX is waterproof, the Deus not. Deus poor on the beach, the CTX good.Deus awesome. Excalibur 2 awesome, CTX OK.To find stuff you have to cover the ground and the CTX is too big and clunky for hard terrain, like brush or heavy plough, but you will see me in the sea with the Excalibur 2. :)
Try the "LARGEST" coil you can get for the Deus and hunt with that for awhile. I hope they offer a 24" coil. Any smart person using a CTX would pick a coil that is not going to kill his arms but, still get them the coins. Like I said before, I own and swing an etrac, and I am perfectly happy with the 11" pro - coil that comes with it. I also have a 8X6 S.E.F. and a SunRay X 5" coil. I feel I don't need any larger coils as these all perform the way they were intended. Oh, I can order a 15" WOT coil, but why? What I am trying to say is, spend at least 20 to 50 hours with your "new beast" before saying it is not so good. What was the reason you bought one for anyways? In a way it is a good service you are doing the community, I don't need or want any more competition in my neck of the woods. HH
I bought it because Pondguru said it was good and it is... its just heavy and not better than the Deus, except in water and on the beach. Deus wins on land because it finds more and is much better ergonomically by far and in my tests finds more. I have probably done 20+ hours with the CTX and if it was lighter I'd still go for the Deus because of the versatility of being able to use several Deus programs at once. I'm lucky to not be limited to one machine and would buy anything that might have a chance of finding new/different targets. In the end its what ends up in your finds bag that's important and the site is probably more important than the detector for that unless of course you are exhausted by your detector after a couple of hours of swinging a fat heavy lump about. :)I'd use the CTX if I was working in and around a river though and Pondguru thinks is great for deep pasture. We will see because I've just scored some amazing deep pasture and will back to back it with the CTX.
