Cub Cadet Dozer Build S2:E4 Track-tackular!

The first track is finished and installed on the dozer and tested! Building a fuel tank bracket and getting closer to a running engine!
Using parts from two vintage Cub Cadet garden tractors, along with metal fabrication and welding work, we are building a mini dozer from (almost) scratch.
I use a Langmuir Systems Crossfire Pro plasma table with a Razorcut 45CNC plasma cutter and a machine torch to create many needed parts. At times we shift to the Bridgeport-clone knee/vertical mill or South Bend 10 inch lathe to complete a machining step. Occasionally, the South Bend shaper or the Logan lathe is called on for specialty work.
A Hobart Handler welder is my primary MIG welder, and it comes into play at nearly every step. If I'm not running the welder, an Oxy/Acetylene torch or the Eastwood Cut 40 plasma cutter is fired up for some molten metal removal.
Making a mini-dozer will add to the collection of equipment that I previously built, including the mini-motor grader and the tandem axle Cub Cadet dump truck/gator.
Dewalt and Makita grinders and drills, eVolution metal cutting saws, a Grizzly metal cutting band saw and Jet grinders and sanders see regular use in my projects.

I’d just remind anybody that wants to criticize this man’s building techniques to kindly leave a link to the catalog of videos documenting the handmade custom miniature dozer you built.

Hey guy. Don't worry about how people criticize your process because what you build is absolutely awesome. I love it. Maybe a Cub cadet mini excavator in the future perhaps. Keep up the good work.

That would be interesting to see how he figured out how to run everything off of cub cadet internals and make it still have the cub cadet look. He could use the mower hood where it would open sideways behind the seat and have the mechanicals there like a real excavator. I mean he's got the track system down and once he figures out how to raise and lower the blade on the dozer all he'd have to do was do a little conversion of that system to run the boom, stick, bucket, and rotation on the excavator. He could use a PTO to power a hydraulic pump for those functions. I really think he's smart enough he'd figure it out. Maybe he'll tackle that one day! 😀

I really enjoy the content and your build. Also remember half the people leaving rude comments never ever get off their couch or computer. Lot of people pretend that there's something when they're really nothing. So keep doing what you're doing and just ignore them. Again great job.

I think the dog is acting protective, versus affectionate. He's checking on your safety. That's what they do. Because if he was looking for affection he'd stick around longer than he does. Seems he gets a quick pet and leaves. Definitely taking care of you.

Frank, it's a pleasure for me to follow your journey with this amazing project. It saddens me that people leave negative comments. If they've nothing constructive to say, it would be nice if they stayed quiet. I think (and I hope I'm right) that you know that. Of course there are compromises, but this is one hell of an investment in time, effort and money which is hopefully giving you a lot of fulfilment and your (at time of writing) nearly 18k subscribers something to look forward to on Fridays. Keep going and good luck. I look forward to seeing it in action!

Love what your doing, please don’t let comments bother you. Some people want to simply share an idea but may be to assertive. Others are simply just not happy unless there putting others else down. It’s your build, it’s your money, it’s your video, SO HAVE IT YOUR WAY! Thanks for sharing your hobby with us!

Thanks for even filming and providing basically free entertainment for all of us. Really you are just giving people like me hope that someday I could build something awesome like these machines out of everyday parts at a reasonable cost. I would be willing to bet you have done 10x the stuff any person leaving negative comments has done.

Well done Frank!! I have also made and modified agriculture and earthmoving machinery that dad and I operated all my life with the things you have on hand. I would love a workshop like you have there. All we used were a big heavy drill that dad and I modified with special home made tools we used for drilling/boring large holes, 4"x 3' lathe as well as a 1933 24" x 10' lathe which was checked/updated in 1940 for ww2 work, oxygen & acetylene, angle grinders, 8" bench grinder and welders mig and a stick. A good mill was always on the list but never got there!! People was amazed with what we made and modified for us and later the brother in laws!! People can't get why you do something one way as everyone has different ideas on doing things! That why I modified or build a lot of things as one sees a easier or better way for the jobs they need to do.

You are making some great progress. So cool to see the track on it. A lot of work to get to this point. Your welds are getting pretty darn good there. Practice makes perfect and this project is giving lots of practice. Funny, I catch myself looking away when you strike the arch. Old habits are hard to break. It looks like you have sufficient slack to assembly the chain off the dozer then install, may make it easier. Hard to tell from film. There are a thousands ways to accomplish something, I hope that my comments were not harsh or insulting. If our places were switched, I am sure that viewers would be making the same comments about me. Turning a lawn tractor into a dozer is no small task and takes a lot of thinking out of the box.

Frank don't let the nit pickers get to you. That thing looks 100X better than I could do in my shop and I am a welder/machinist/mechanic. I have designed and built some pretty cool stuff in my day and with a fully stocked shop at my disposal it was fairly easy. I think you are doing a danged fine job with what you have in machines and experience. Would I have done some things different? Sure I would but a lot seems acceptable to me. Sometimes you have to make compromises. So was that cool or what to see that track go for the first time? It's going to be a blast to ride around. Keep up the hard work, the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter! Take care and be safe! Cheers Terry

The holes in the links are tight because it is meant to be a press fit. The trick to drilling these out is to drill it in reverse. It's not great on the bit and will require pushing force, but it does work and will reduce the chance of a broken wrist. Be careful and keep up the great work Frank!

Nothing to any thing here except learn it and as for the tools eBay has a mig tig stick 110/220 machine for under 400$ that I kept over a Lincoln 110 mig simply because it out performed the Lincoln at 110 to 110 why not have the better welder with much more options the rest of the machine tools are not as expensive you might think find a cheap lathe in the 9-12” range for 500$ or so and with that one machine it’ll blow your mind what you can do everything done with the plasma table can be done with an angle grinder not much fun but it can be done start gathering tools and before you know it you’ll have a metal fab shop quick ask me how I know in under a year I have a functional full size machine shop
