that description of the car parts industry sounds exactly like the firearms and firearms accessory industry. Have seen hundreds percent markup. Also, just looked up OEM honda carburetor: $70. The chinese clone: $20.

Do you know how many hours were on the machine when you bought it? There is a 3185 for sale in my area with almost 1000 hrs on it. They are asking $1200. Seems a little too much considering the hours on it.

We've become obsessed with credentials. This is largely because we have outlawed eye cue testing (I know it's misspelled. RU-vid autodeletes my comment if it includes the right spelling). A lot of people are shocked to find out. No other psychological test in our history has the explanatory and predictive power of the eye cue test. That is why they banned it. While not technically illegal in a de jure sense, it's de facto illegal because we very stupidly believe all people and groups are equal and so if you use an eye cue test, it leaves you susceptible to lawsuits. California have actually outlawed testing certain children in school. But it's very real. That's what you're seeing in this video. An above average eye cue.

When I was kid in the 80's we had two 1968 Wheelhorses. Only once do I remember both running at the same time. We were always borrowing parts from one to keep the other running.
@WatchWesWork
@WatchWesWork 4 года назад
Heh. The one I had as a kid came with an aluminum block Briggs and Straton engine. I rebuilt it twice and both times it overheated and scored the cylinder. We had bored it beyond the limits, so I got a free cast iron bore Kohler out of an ancient 3 wheeled golf cart that went through a flood. I got the engine freed up, rebuilt the carb and ignition, put it in the tractor, and it's been running for 20 years. My dad still uses it some.

Great video Wes. I think you are spot on as to price (s) purchase & sale. Just throwing this out there for what it's worth. With the advent of filming your repair's, i.e., that you can show a potential purchasing customer all repair's made to an item, if that wouldn't translate to being able to ask say for an extra 10 or maybe even 15 percent additional. As I'm commenting, you may have already sold this tractor, but just something to consider say on your next project, i.e., document all repair's via video camera of your choice. As you explained for the Tie-Rod ends, I would think the same would apply to the Blade Cutting Housing Assembly's, i.e., Club Cadet doesn't make them, they just purchase the aforesaid item, in bulk. I'm glad you have learned on your own the *Eleventh Commandment.* For those who may not know, just what in the world is the *Eleventh Commandment.* ANSWER: Eleventh Commandment = Thou SHALL NOT PAY RETAIL.

what i was told about the spindle seals on a cub cadet forum.........Normally, one would put in seals so the lips retain grease inside. BUT since we have grease fittings in the shaft, if we did that and began greasing, one of the seals would be forced out, usually ruining it. so install one seal "upside down" so while greasing, any excess will harmlessly work out around the seal. Some prefer to do the bottom seal inverted, others do the top so they can see the grease coming out while greasing.(if the belt guard if off)

Those plastic bushings on the wheels are a real "education" for a non-mechanic like myself. My old MTD Yard Machine, which I plan on keeping until it just falls out from under me, uses those plastic bushings. What I did not know is you HAVE to know which ones as there are two different kinds and using the wrong ones just means you wasted your money. Luckily, my shop knows my machine and gave me the correct ones. I thought the steering mechanism was wearing out but it was just those crazy bushings. Once I replaced them the machine steers and handles like brand new with no play at all in the steering. The things you learn even at my age.

Hi Wes, I am a new sub to your channel. Love your humor and references to Mustie1. LOL In the recent past i repaired mowers and small engines for the local community. Just for the record, I HATE CUB CADET. High prices, complexity, and poor quality. I found that I could get almost anything for CC on Ebay for a lot less, from PTO clutch to belts to bearings, etc. That goes for all other mower parts. Went to the manufacturer for part numbers and searched on Ebay for that number. 95% of the time Ebay had the part for cheap and free shipping. Just catching up on your past videos. Thanks for sharing and happy you got a place with your own shop.

Seems like the prices for Cub Cadet stuff is about the same as John Deere which definitely is expensive. But it seems to be well built. I did some work in the MTD factory where this tractor was built, so I have a bit of a soft spot for them.

Tractor supply has a good price for the belts. Working on junk is good practice as we are all getting cheaper and wanting to get by as cheap as we can. If you are going to toss the old pulleys let me know I have been welding mine for a couple years now and I weld about as good as I can see any more. Be cautious on the blades you buy, I got some that bent when I was mowing tall grass. Also I used a piece of EMT as a sleeve in the front axle where it steers because that wears fast. You did an awesome job a lot more than I would have. The tires stay up if you add the green snot since they run at 20 pounds a tight corner can roll the bead.

Very nice. I have its smaller brother. Got it for a fair price at 300 bucks running and mowing but needs some work like yours. But I figured when I wanna start painting my Kubota G1800 itll be nice to run to keep from having alot of mower down time. Good advice on your videos too! One mower brand I've had great luck with is Honda. Have a rear engined snapper style one and a HR215 self propelled. Parts are pretty high but they are definitely awesome. And Cub cadets like these and the older ones are very great and with decent maintenance should last forever.

Well edited video Wes. I enjoyed it. Doesn't have to be machining. I like repair videos just as much. That mower had seen better days. Having the deck sorted is nice. That's where most the damage and wear takes place anyway. That is as long as the owner doesn't run the engine out of oil. They all use a small amount and I would see it every day. Some owners would never checks the oil and throw a rod or lock them up. Them they would check and see it had no oil then proceed to fill it with new oil and scream warranty. Not even smart enough to fill it with used oil 1st😉. All day every day. Nice buy

I'm not wanting to be a parts catalog for identifying a machine, I just want to walk up and read one simple data tag that tells us exactly what we're messing with. Rant of the day. Kudos to Kohler, their stickers usually stay on the engine housing and only fade a little bit. My rant of the day.

Nice job, enjoyed going thru the repair. I am in New Zealand and just the other day accidently put petrol into a diesel van. AA tow truck, home, next day drained it and refilled with diesel. The fuel container that I used to get the diesel with is RED and it has written on it USE FOR PETROL OR DIESEL FUELS. So I used it for DIESEL. There you have it!!!
@WatchWesWork
@WatchWesWork 5 лет назад
Yeah, that's not good. The petrol doesn't lubricate so it's hard on the pump or injectors. I worked on an engine once that destroyed the turbo after running petrol instead of diesel. High exhaust temperatures I guess.
@mohabatkhanmalak1161
@mohabatkhanmalak1161 5 лет назад
@@WatchWesWork I would think that with any computerized engine management system, there would be sensors that would automatically shut down the engine before the petrol got to the injectors. In the old days, with petrol, diesel engines piston tops would blow through with the wrong fuel.
@WatchWesWork
@WatchWesWork 5 лет назад
Well it was definitely a computer controlled engine that I worked on. I'm not sure how the computer would know what kind of fuel was used. It's a bad deal. I would think a common rail pump would take a beating if you filled up with petrol.

@@WatchWesWork Wrong fuel mistakes happen all the time especially where the petrol, diesel pumps are located next to each other. In New Zealand, the majority of vehicles are Japanese and I am sure they would have an auto shut down design in their vehicles. I find their engineering is thorough. Must look into this shut down system - ie if it exists.

Well if it doesn't you should invent it!

I enjoyed watching and like repairing also. It’s a shame that it’s almost not worth fixing these with the price of the parts, and the low resale.

I've had a 2145 C/C for 23 years. While it is an MTD built machine it has the tapered roller bearings in the deck hydrostatic and shaft drive. Have had to rewire because of cheap connectors that get loose and burn out. Onan motor keeps on running flawlessly.

Yup, that is a robust machine. Good luck on the rest of the move, and don't let that Brian guy shame you. I know know his forman won't let him buy seal drivers when a socket works perfectly well ;-)

That's always been my thinking. But, the internet demands that we use the "right" tool. Whatever that is.

You can get the serial number of the engine if you are really worried about what model this is. You will need it for a lot of the parts. You can call Cub Cadet and give them the serial number off the engine. Most of the time, they can cross reference it and tell you what model it is for certain.

Great video. I'm interested to know - would you have still bought it if you knew how much work and money you needed to put into it to get it fixed up? I'm not being critical because, believe me, I've been there and hindsight is a wonderful thing :-)
