G'day Matty, I've stopped this half way through the video where you've just made the sleeve. I don't think you want to have any play whatsoever between the tube and the sleeve, as it is not needed at all. The movement is allowed by the bolt through the sleeve, that's where you want your play. In fact if I were doing that I'd have spot welded the tube to the sleeve to stop any wear at all in the tube/ sleeve. But you have done it as per the original, and I dare say that machine has done a lot of work for the tube to have worn like it has. The manufacturer just chose the easy option not to fix the sleeve to the tube for cheapness I recon. As you say mate it is what it is. And your repair has fixed it and stopped the bloody annoying " It drives me nuts!" extra movement in the arms, so it's a win Matty! Cheers from the UK, Sam
I thought the same thing. I'm the guy that when something fails, I have to try to improve it. The original design is flawed because it puts the wear on the part with the smallest surface area, the walls of the tubing to the outer surface of the bushing rather than on the inner surface area of the bushing to the outer surface of the bolt. If the original design had been with the bushing press fit or welded into the tube, it would have probably lasted the life of the mower.
@@tiredoldmechanic1791 with out seeing it I was thinking that the “bush” was actually as spacer so you can’t over tighten it to the point it was hard to move but that might of been the step bolts job 🤷♂️
I agree, the sleeve would have been, at best, a press fit in the handle tube, and the tube has worn due to being made of Chinesium or similar. The bolt should rotate within the sleeve and the plastic bushings allow for this. A couple of Tack welds on one end of the sleeve, while it was held in place by a bushing on the other end, the bolt through it and the nut tightened up on packing washers would have located it, disassemble and 4 tacks put at each end of the sleeve, then filed or ground off was all that was needed. Oh, and being a Yorkshireman by Birth, a few centimetres of 0.8 welding wire and a couple of gasps of inert gas is a lot cheaper to replace than Delrin and Steel bar stock! Of course, I don't have a lathe or a mill, but I do have a stick welder.
You don't have to make excuses for something that bugs you, I know I don't. So I just take care of it and it's done with. I totally get you on this point Matty.
G'day Matty, that's the problem with having any mechanical sympathy, every clack in that hole, and you can picture that hole wallowing out just a little more, it would drive me nuts as well 🙂
LOL - "Stop lookin - I found it..." One of my favourites! Usually used when I am looking for something, someone KNOWS I am looking for .... but they are ignoring ....
As someone who has driven a skid steer with loose handles before , I completely understand your frustration. The skid steer would start kicking and bucking ,the more you fought it the worse it got! You just had to let go and wait for it to stop.Great video. Be Safe!
LoL we all have things which get on our nerves. Can I send my wife to you so you can fix her, her tongue is really loose. Joking she is a diamond. Nice lawn, we have one but I kid you not it is around a 40° slope as we live halfway up a mountain. Good job Matty, great to see the local wild life. Tuesday night at around 3:30 am a fox and a badger decided to have a fight at the front of the house, what a bloody noise, soon chased them off. Regards to all mate 👍
Gday, When you find a diamond you always hang on to them mate, There rare nowadays, that would been a hell of a noise with them 2 fighting, Thanks for watching, Cheers
That would piss me off big time, that sort of thing really gets me going, not having exact positive feedback gives me the creeeps, its up there with backlash on the cross-feed and compound. once again a great video, my Thursday night of the week look forward too. you keep well Matty.
Power feeding with the quill on the Milling machine. Now you’re just showing off mate 😂. I wish mine could do it. Good work mate, hopefully you’ll be doing doughnuts or wheelies on that mower real soon. Cheers 🍻
Nice job Matty. I'm all for fixing things. We have a workshop, and we have the tools and time to do it. Those loose arms would have rattled me as well. ATB, Cheers Nobby
G'day, Matty. That type of split bushing never has much life, unless it it adjustable so that the tension is kept on the joint, & checked at regular intervals. The only, or best way, is to make a good thick bush weld it into the tube, fit a good tensile bolt about 16mm or even 19mm ( 5/8 or 3/4" bolt ) with snug fitting bolt only a couple of thousands of an inch .002" side clearance, preferably with a grease nipple fitted. For long, uninterrupted life
Gday Ted, The original bush has done 1174hrs and I think thats pretty good considering and this is why I made it the same, if it lasts another 1000hrs i'll be more then happy to replace it again, thanks for watching
Matty its like a truck door that does not latch good and rattles going down the road or the hood that won't latch well. I spent this afternoon mowing with my Zero Turn mower. I have been using ZTR mowers not since 1995 and would never go back to one with a steering wheel.
Gday Terry, I have Husqvarna for doing around home here and its good for doing the banks where the zero turn dont like it to much, Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
@@MattysWorkshop Yes that is one of the downsides of the ZTR they want to slide when mowing on angles. I have an irrigation ditch that I mow and always fighting while doing it.
@@MattysWorkshop That's it. For sure. In my line of work (IT) stuff needs fixing every day but there's nothing more satisfying than fixing a problem where you never get around to it, people are too lazy or the problem is too complex and people get scared of it. Sometimes it's just a matter of diving in and saying "stuff this... I'm going to fix this problem" 😂
Hi mate. I know what you mean here. On mine the levered have worn enough where the touch each other and it annoys me too mate. Makes a good machine a job to drive. Great repair mate well done
Gday Steve, This mowers done 1174hrs and really its lasted pretty good, if I get another 1000hrs out of the repair ill be happy, Appreciate you watching mate, Cheers
Lol , you would freak out at my ride on , always 2 flat front tyres , jump start every time & start with a screwdriver !!! Must do some repairs before this years mowing season !
Gday, the Cub Cadet has been a really solid machine, this one has over 1100hrs on it now and nothing has really gone wrong, great mower, thanks for watching
G’day mate, thanks for the video. Geez the mower looks in great nick considering the hours and miles it’s done. Anyhow, thanks again. Have a good one 👍🇦🇺
The boring bar it could be in the spot on the shelf where you were going to put all the boring bars and attachments but never got around to moving the rest of it over Cheers and your welcome for the advice if you could call it that You could have made the new bush into a bolt come bush thus getting rid of the bolt and nut but hay as you have say before there are a lot of different ways to skin a cat mine is just one of them another point the new to you Mill you are going to get lazy with all the auto feed features you now have I am jealous as cheers
Gday, I still cant find the boring bar yet, its really disappeared, I made the new bush the same as it was, the original has last over 1000hrs so I won't mind replacing it then, appreciate you watching
@@MattysWorkshop well Matty I could have sworn it was where you last used it never mind it shall remain one of those mistresses may show up one day along with the rest of the 10 mm sockets Cheers
i would suggest blanking off the pipe and then redoing the hole for more support and less wear on the pipe, pipe wears way too easily from the thin walls. solid is betterer
Nice job Matty. Nothing worse than a sloppy fit. TBH we used to weld the bushes in for customers on the JD Ztrac mowers. ATB stay well, regards from the UK
Gday, Yes I could have welded the bushes in but considering its done 1174hrs without the original bushes being welded in I thought id do the same again, Thanks for watching
I know just what you mean by a mower part driving you mad. I have spent a few years now trying to track down every reason my mower deck keeps cutting unlevel and it drives me mad that each fix has only gotten it a "little bit" better. I think mine has either 10 or 12 points of connection to the deck with the lift mechanism and they all have just a bit of slop.
Gday, This has a full floating deck and theres only 4 point of connection, its always cut level and never given trouble, Appreciate you watching mate, cheers
Gday Matty how annoying is it when you have to fix something that should have just been made properly in the first place those joints have lateral force on them constantly while the machine is being operated that mower can't have been cheap and they go and use a fastening setup like that it couldn't do anything but flog out and eventually fail. Its just good to know at least that we have the knowledge and gear to deal with stuff like that when it happens.
Gday, This has done 1174hrs and personally it lasted pretty good hence why I made it the same, if it last another 1000hrs i'll be more then happy to replace it again, thanks for watching
There is nothing trivial about sloppy controls. Try running a D8 with the steering flopping all over the place and you'll look like a drunk. More than me even.
