This is a real helpful video and I appreciate that the Lord has made this fix a very simple one and it should be with very little cost. Thanks for the clear view and walk through.

Thank you! Such a blessing that you took the time to help those of us who have the same tractor and the same problem! I'll fix mine tonight. I'm guessing in less than 20 minutes, I'll be mowing again...

your 3 part video was GREAT! my cub cadet is a 2002 so the underside was a little different and i installed it different. i removed the battery and battery mount then i pulled the steering column out from the top and i actually dropped it in place from overhead and everything went back together just like in your video. your video helped me diagnose the problem and of course fix it for less than $22.00! thanks again and thanks for giving credit to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

Great job -- buying the parts today. I admire your ability to narrate while working, rather than adding the voice over later.

This is a great video on how to fix the problem with our CC mower. I could see what the problem was on the mower with the steering but was unsure how to fix it. You make it look fairly easy. Thanks.

Hey, Thanks a lot for the video. I had started taking the whole plate assembly loose/off and thought to myself that there must be an easier way. You saved me a lot of time and aggravation. JC

Excellent video watched the other one where the guy put it on the easy (wrong way) Glad I came across your video I thought that is how it went and I was curious how to get the hex flange in. That's the part I will dread. just ordered my parts from Cud Cadet $21.97 and that's with the faster delivery!! So glad you saved me a few hundred bucks hopefully a few less bloody knuckles!!

This video is very helpful!! I would just add that in the video he struggles to get the hex bearing into the hole. I used an extendable magnet to grab the old one out, and to carefully slide the new one into the hole. I'm sure shop would have charged at least 1 hour labor. I also agree, that while my pinion gear is not too bad, it's worth the $5 for a new one.

Hey folks I have a very quick fix on this. Take the nut off as in the video, Then remove the gear, remove the washer by lifting up on the steering shaft and the washer should fall out. Now for the quick fix. Take the new steering busing with the hex facing upwards and put in the place of the washer making sure the hex part goes into the hex cutout in the mower shaft hole. Drop the steering shaft back down and replace the gear and the nut. Do not over tighten the nut or the mower will be really tight when trying to steer. I put a very small amount of thread lock on the steering shaft threads to make sure it did not come loose. I did this quick fix on my cub cadet SLT 1554 and now a year later it is still steering great and I had it fixed in a third of the time plus I did not need to remove the mower deck. Hope this helps. My hands were to big to get the new bushing back into the original spot and I thought of doing it this way instead and wow was it easy.

If you’re working on this fix, make sure the hex bushing you remove and the one you buy to replace it are the same thickness!! The one I purchased was much thinner, and I had to undo some work I had done to install a couple washers to replace the thickness and get the steering column to be in the right position top to bottom.

I ordered the parts before I took the old worn parts out. I used the tractor model and serial number to find them. When I got the new parts, this hex bushing is only about 1/4 inch thick. The old one is 1/2 inch thick. The new hex bushing isn't held in place now, because it's too thin and will pop up out of the frame when you turn. Now I have to take it back apart and either get an proper sized bushing , or shim the 'new' one so it is held down by the shoulder on the steering shaft.

Am I the only one that lifted the steering rod up using the steering wheel and then just reached in and put the new hex bearing back on the end of the rod? Plenty of room in the engine compartment to stick your hand in and reach it.😉

I had to install bushing on LT1018 with my brothers help. He put the bushing on the steering shaft before inserting in the hole. Normally the bushing would fall off before you could get it in. He took a long rubber band looped it over the edge of the bushing just enough to keep it pulled up until you could insert the shaft. It worked great Hope this helps someone else. I use RU-vid every time I work on my mowers and hope some can us this info

hello, I am aware of how to put the hex bearing in for the steering shaft, but shouldn't you have had to press it in harder to lock it in place? you just laid yours in there and called it good - but yet when you removed the old one, you had to work on it to punch it out. Not sure why it was harder for you to remove it from the grooves than it was to put the new one in that same space. (With mine I can line it up with the hex-like grooves in the body of the mower, but I am unable to make it snap firmly into place). Confused.
