Before you start tearing down your riding lawn mower to replace the complete steering assembly, check and see if this failure mode looks like the one you have. The fix could be a $7 bushing/flange and requires removal of only one nut on your steering shaft.

Fantastic video! 5 stars. Thank you! Mine is from 2006 and i have a hilly 5 acre yard. Steering went out on a pretty hard sheer incline and this is exactly what needs to be fixed. You saved me hours or strife and head scratching. Thank You!

Depending on how bad the little gear is, you can take it off and turn it around. They're designed to used twice. I have solved many worn gear problems many times by just turning the old one. You may have to replace the seated washer just above the gear on steering shaft. The id on that washer wears and allows slop on mating gear teeth arm.

Thank you very much for this video. Every place around here for repairs is 2 to 3 weeks. I ordered the part and got it the next day. I fixed it in no time. Again thanks for the video!!!

Don’t forget to put the washer in. A new washer would be better. And check the bolts holding the gear plate as they loosen sometimes and move away from the shaft and gears also causing some of the issues. The other is try to make sure the mower is moving a little when you’re turning the wheels while cutting grass. Turning the wheels while completely stop is tough on the shaft and gears as it is on a vehicle. Great video !! 🤙

Thought maybe I accidentally clicked ahead in the video. Everything presented was correct but would be better if video showed the actual replacement of the new parts. Tip: After the flanged hex steering bushing was removed, I threaded a length of string trimmer filament up the hole until it cleared the engine bay. Put the new bushing on the line and let it slide down to the hole. A little pinky finagling got it seated properly. My old pinion gear only had wear close to one edge so I was able to flip it over and reuse. Fortunate as the replacement bushing was not bundled with a new pinion gear.

It did help me , but at the same time you need to know there are two sizes of bushing, I ordered both but the beefier one came first and my brother & I had to pound it from underneath to get it to dislodge fron the frame. I wish it came out the way yours did. We used the one we had but needed to go to Ace hdwe to get a 20 threaded nylok nut to stop from it coming loose while riding because the thicker bushing left fewer threads to fasten to end of shaft and used blue thread lok to help insure. it woul not come loose. All in all Thanks for the video 5 stars buddy.

I've replaced the hex bushing on my Cub Cadet SLT 1554 four times I think. This part should have been a bearing. I had also already flipped the pinion gear over to wear on a different part of the teeth. But the steering was getting loose again. The pinion gear was worn as were the center teeth on the steering sector. So I decided to do a more comprehensive repair. I ordered the hex bushing, pinion gear, and steering sector from Amazon. He is correct that it is very difficult. Actually, it's ridiculously difficult. If you could reach everything, this would take half an hour, but it took me 9 hours total.

Exactly what I need. I have a 2001 cub cadet that's still trucking. I've replaced a lot of things on it already but the steering started popping during my last mow.

Unfortunately I own a Scott S1642 and the gas tank is right in front of the console so reaching into that flange area is a major task as the gas tank needs to come out first. My gears don't "skip" like yours but there is around a 4 to 6 inch play when turning the steering wheel. The steering wheel is held onto the shaft with a wonderful screw with a square instead of a slot or phillips or even a torx head. What the heck happened to using NUTS or hex head bolts? I will look it over using this knowledge though,, you gave me some hope!!

5/5 Star Review. I have an old LT1042 (2005-2008) and am forcing myself to learn small engine repair. It started with replacing the deck belt and I'm becoming more and more familiar with every portion of this old Cub. Hoping it transfers to my next small engines. Your video quality and your explanation were among the best "tutorial" videos yet. Do you have any advice for sourcing OEM parts, such as the gear you pulled out in this video? I can't seem to find a service manual for my tractor, and my local hardware store's selection isn't robust enough to rely on. Already took 3 trips to replace my mower deck belt because their OEM cross reference was inaccurate. Thanks!

Hello! I’ve got a 5.5 Johnson 1954 CD-11 that won’t run. I’m new to all of this. I am getting spark and is turning over. Do I need to do a simple carb clean and she should run or is it possible for there to another problem. Any help would be awesome! Thanks.

If you want the steering wheel center to run parallel with the ground when going straight don't forget to line that up when you put the new gear on. I didn't care either way but I knew my wife wouldn't like it not being lined up. Lol

Trying to do the exact same job on mine right now, but the bolt is incredibly tight and I cannot get it off. How did you stop the steering shaft from turning, that would have been super handy to see in the video? Great work! :-)
