Part 1 of 4. To briefly escape the frigid Canadian Winter, we headed down to Jardines Del Rey airport in Cuba and stayed at the Pullman Resort. We then headed out of Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Paradon fishing for Snapper, Grouper, Jacks and Barracuda, in the beautiful Cayo Coco area. On this beautiful day I fish with my very good Cuban friend, Yordan and my Brother, John. The fishing was awesome, enjoy!
If you are heading down to the Cayo Coco area and are interested in some more cost effective fishing options, you can send Yordan a PM through Facebook, he is a Cuban local and lives close by in the town of Moron. Yordan will most certainly be able to help hook you up, at very affordable rates: / yordan.fg.39 - Tell him you got his contact from Big Shaun's RU-vid channel so he knows what it's about. You can also call Yordan, he can do shore or walk outs and inshore boat charters too.
Mobile inside Cuba: 52 633299
Mobile outside Cuba 011 53 52 633299
*Note: You will need to bring down your own rods, reels, tackle and lures to fish inshore as the Cubans are very poor, they also cannot buy any fishing equipment on the island.
Some of the links below are Amazon Affiliate links, which means I earn a very small commission if you purchase through these links, which help towards buying gear and travel expenses etc.

Video was awesome, those “red snapper” are actually called mutton snapper and the jacks are yellow jacks, the longer skinnier snapper are yellow tail snapper (commonly referred to as yellow tails) and the other snapper where gray snapper aka mangrove snapper, just Incase anyone was wondering .

It looks like you guys were fishing fairly light and enjoying plenty of great sport. I am visiting Cayo Guillermo for the first time in April, would you mind sharing some advice on rods, reels and line etc. so I can rock up with the right tools for the job please.

Hi Shaun, I notice you have both spinning and casting setups. Any thoughts on casting setups for saltwater? Are they worth it over spinning reels in certain situations such as topwater?
@ShaunOutdoors
@ShaunOutdoors 4 года назад
Yes absolutely, I LOVE them for topwater and heavier lures. If I could get away with throwing all of my baits with casting rods I would. Just make sure you invest in a good quality reel that you can cast long and all day. Good luck! 👍
@popofishing
@popofishing 4 года назад
My only concern was losing distance when casting from shore but it's probably not as big of an issue with the heavier poppers. Okuma has some nice casting travel swimbait rods (7'11") that I am looking at. I already have a Curado 301E to that I can use. Cheers!
@ShaunOutdoors
@ShaunOutdoors 4 года назад
@@popofishing The Curado likely wont be big enough and the drag may not be powerful enough, it will also restrict your line capacity. These fish fight 5 times harder and faster than fresh water fish, they have so much power. I would recommend taking at least a Musky size reel. You will need to load the reel with plenty of 50lb to 80lb braid, plus a 80lb to 100lb flouro leader. Don't get me wrong, many of the fish you will land no problem with the Curado, but one decent fish and you will be spooled in the blink of an eye.
@popofishing
@popofishing 4 года назад
Yes I came to the same conclusion shortly after I replied to you. I also have a Calcutta 400D, that should be fine. Right now I am using a Saragosa 8000SW for fishing in Cuba.

Hi Shaun nice video footage I like bottom fishing in a small boat than trolling in a big charter boat if you don't mind me asking how much does it cost to rent a boat in Cuba I just book in Playa Pesquero , and are you guys using braided line with wire leaders and what line test lbs. I was in Costa Rica early this year and my 20 lbs braided line keep on breaking shore fishing I think spanish makerel but I don't have leader wires with me thank you .

Sorry if my comments cut into your profiting on the suffering of the Cuban People. And my comments are easily verified with just a few Google searches. And as for your "Cuban. Friends" are you referring to your Cuban Communist Party approved workers? The only Cubans allowed contact or permission to work with foreigners have to be loyal Communist Party Members approved by the government. You are either a fool or a tool of the Communist Party.

Profiting on the suffering of the Cuban people? Are you for real? The trip and fishing boats/guides cost me $5,500.00, not to mention the hefty cash tips to various Cuban individuals and car rentals, and so far this video has netted me a whopping $3.00 lol! Good one 🤣

I am Cuban American, I lived through Castro's Terror, and escaped in1960. If you go there as a Tourist you are a Communist sympathizer. You are supporting a Communist Government which has subjected it's population to poverty and untold suffering. If you're told that your tourist dollars help the Cuban People, that is a lie. Tourist money is taxed at 97% ! The Cuban does not even get to keep the 3% in Dollar value, but in Cuban Pesos. With all the places one can fish, why enable a Communist Regime ?

Interesting, so you are just a tool promoting tourists/fisherman to bolster and support the Communist Regime financially. With the entire Carribean to fish, you promote Cuba.
