Hey guys- great tips. FYI, having breakfast at your airbnb is actually a stated requirement for US citizens to legally travel to Cuba, if traveling under the "support for the Cuban people" category. It's listed directly on the Treasury Department website- no kidding! It actually says to eat breakfast with the family. That's why most of the airbnb offer breakfast. :) Thanks again!

Depending on the airline, you don't have to buy the health insurance. Southwest's airfare includes the Cuban travelers medical insurance. You should note that the reason this is required is because they have socialized medicine and cannot bill insurance companies in other countries, and of course those insurance companies probably don't want to contribute to socialized medicine. Also the medical insurance is different than regular travel insurance. You don't have to go through another country to get a visa, you can get them at US airports or you can purchase them online and have them delivered to you or to your gate. You said to convert to CUP but that is the Cuba moneda nacional and is for locals. Tourist money is CUC which is the Cuban convertible pesos, although realistically you should have both. The rate of exchange isn't going to cause you to gain or lose money. CUC is a fixed rate, set with the USD so what ever you're getting, whether it be Euros or CAD, it will be no different exchanging for CUC as it was for USD. The whole point of getting Euros or CAD before going to Cuba is because when converting USD to CUC, there is a 13% fee (well 10% tax + 3% fee) so while they are worth exactly the same, you will lose 13¢ on every USD converted to either Cuban currency and will not make it back when you exchange your money to come home. Every other currency only incurs the 3% exchange fee. As for the wifi, you can get international sim cards that work in Cuba and some Airbnb hosts have wifi in their homes. A meal shouldn't be more than 5-7 CUP?? that's nuts. That's 20¢-28¢ US. You keep interchanging CUC and CUP.
@troygravett
@troygravett 5 лет назад
Maggie of House Valera Thank you for your comment. We do mention in the video that some airlines include the medical insurance & visas in the price of their airfare. If they don’t you can purchase online or at the airport. Some local restaurants prices were in CUP, while most were in CUC, so we may have accidentally interchanged the two, but CUC is the tourist currency. Thanks for your input!

NikkiZ this is the comments section, and I was commenting, just as you just have. If you want to go there with partial or misinformation, that's on you. While you're at it, be sure to scroll down and take her recommendation to utilize a no longer legal reason to enter the country. Remember, when you get there, you're stuck with the choices you make and neither the Cuban or American governments are going to be empathetic if you screw up. Happy travels

Loved your video, super helpful. I am planning to go in December 2020, pending Coronavirus and documents as I was born there but defected (unknowingly) as a child in 61, yes, I am THAT old, hahahaha. My daughter is traveling with me and I am planning to stay for a month, got both of our tickets for that length of time but when I tell her of some of the hardships, specifically water, toilet paper and transportation, the noise level at night if in the middle of the city, we will be, she says she might cut the trip short, which I doubt it could be an option, not sure if she decided to change her mind and return earlier if that is doable at that end. I am afraid she will change her ticket prior to getting there and then decide it was fun and she wants to see more and she will have no other option and would have to leave. I was thinking of getting a LifeStraw 3-gallon contraption to make sure my daughter is happy as I heard the water was an issue there. My daughter is very picky about food, she is vegan, and has no traveling experience outside the country except one time we went to Tijuana, and I think Cuba is a couple of notches better than Tijuana for sure, even if the buildings are falling down and everyone is trying to get a buck by directing you here or there because, from what I have heard, they get a cut which escalates the cost of the food or tour one might be getting assistance with. Doing a lot of research, your video was great. Oh, almost forgot the reason I initially wrote, when you went to restaurants that charge CUP for the Cubans and you paid with CUC, did they charge you accordingly? In other words, if all you had was CUC and you were going to pay with them when they charged in CUPs which right now is approx 26 to a CUC, how did that work? Are you able to change some of your CUCs to CUPs? Thanks for your response. Blessings and Gratitude, Gina
@troygravett
@troygravett 4 года назад
Great question. Yes we did get charged the correct rate. We were able to look up what it was at the time and the restaurant did the conversion for us. However we were not able to exchange back and forth at Atms or banks, but only if they gave us change in cup.

I’m not sure with what mentality you went to Cuba .. you pay 10$ for a uber here right so what makes it any different in Another country ?? Also food 7$ is not expensive lol did you expect dirt cheap food because it’s developing country?
@summergravett1118
@summergravett1118 5 лет назад
For one, Cuba is a second world country. It's extremely underdeveloped and nothing like the U.S. So for that reason alone, one might assume goods/services/alcohol/ food would be significantly cheaper than here in the states. It wasn't "expensive", things just cost more than expected. If you live like a local when you're there then yes its extremely affordable. But if you go places where you can use wifi vouchers, then you can expect to pay $10 per drink which is pricey considering I pay that much in the states.
@summergravett1118
@summergravett1118 5 лет назад
Also, a $10 über ride where you have the luxury of riding in a car no more than 10 years old, being able to call the ride on your phone, track your ride, and be in an air conditioned car with radio, is well worth it. However, having to wave down my own ride, being in a car from the early 1900's with zero ac and radio, cramped and dirty, is not so much worth $10. So to me, there's a huge difference.

Hi! I was just wondering how long it took to purchase the Visa card at the airline gate? I will also be traveling to Cuba through Copa Airlines with a layover in Panama, but the layover time is only 1hr 9 min. Assuming that the flight arrives on time, I just wanted to know if it would be enough time to de-board the previous flight, walk to the gate, buy a Visa Card, and board the plane. The short layover already gives me anxiety, but purchasing one online would cost 3-4x more than at the gate 😓

Really liked your video but you had me confused when mentioning prices (CUP vs CUC) .Average price of things were not clearly articulated CUC or CUP ??? Also, if you have CUP at the end of your trip ..... Do you convert back before you leave Cuba (at a bank of the Customs Area ..... Or can you wait until you get back home ( or do you know if a cruise ship can convert $$$). Thanks
@troygravett
@troygravett 5 лет назад
Jack Taylor Hi Jack! yes the currency can be confusing, let me try to explain it a little better. CUP is the local currency all the cubans use on an everyday basis, while CUC is the tourist currency you receive when you convert your currency in Cuba. CUC = $1 USD in value. Most stores, shops, & restaurants list their prices in CUC, but some of the local spots list their prices in CUP which can be confusing . You will also bargain and pay for things on the street in CUC. Just be sure to look very carefully at the prices. The good news is everybody accepts both, but the values of the two currencies are completely different. I don’t remember how much one CUP is worth in relation to the CUC, but it is significantly less. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!
@troygravett
@troygravett 5 лет назад
Jack Taylor also, from my knowledge & experience you can only convert in Cuba. We converted at the airport and a local bank. I don’t know about the cruise ship, but it may be worth a call to them to ask.

zoe droughan Hi Zoë, the visa i am referring to is called a travel visa. Some countries only require you to have a passport to enter the country while others require you to have a passport AND a travel visa. Cuba is one of these countries that require both. This will still pertain to you if you are traveling from Canada! You must purchase the visa upon arrival.

Don't like the beeping between each tip. Where does these people live, on Mars. Talking about 10.00 a drink, really. In Southern California your lucky to get a drink for 10.00. @summergravett1118

Lloyd Armour Yes actually, we live in Los Angeles on the planet of Mars🙃 We never said the drinks were $10- we said we spent $10 one night on TWO drinks which in Cuba is pricey. You can get $5 drinks easily on happy hour in southern CA so in comparison to that, it’s a lot for a drink in Cuba. Also, the first TWO tips were the requirements to travel into Cuba. You need a visa & you need travel insurance. We didn’t mention a passport since it is obviously needed when traveling outside your country of origin. Other than that, there aren’t any “requirements”.
