Thank you for the good video. I found out, that in combination with CTRLR Software - which is free - you are able to control your analog gear with you CC hardware controller. The Ctrlr software sends the sysex data and works like a vst and the quick controls in cubase can be asigned to the vst! Works like a charme!
I wish to see it how it interacts with a 16CH Faderport. I agree with your opinions - we need interaction with the controller not only one way communication.
I think there will be quite a few older pieces of gear that may see extended use from this. I'm going to be doing a series on creating JavaScript-based remote controls (because this gives a lot more functionality), and will hopefully get hold of some older pieces of kit to get up and running with it...
@@59framus I got my set up to work pretty good for me too. I only wish it was easier to rearrange parameters within the templates of the software used for the customization buttons and the Zero fader option worked for Cubase. I'm hoping software updates with address those requests. That's about it.
I use a Komplete Kontrol S61 mk2, and it definitely does receive the parameter information. It could have something to do with Behringer and how it receives messages. Which, honestly, wouldn’t be much of a surprise. Thank you for this vid! Personally, I think the new Midi Remote is worth the upgrade even on its own
The behringer issue is because it's pretending to be a Mackie Control, which segments the data from the host into groups of 8. Once it moves beyond that, there's no way for it to automatically move there as the sliding window of 8 channels is Cubase's responsibility, and it doesn't know to move it there.

nice video as always! one thing I´d really want to control via midi controller is to be able to navigate presets in a vst synth which it doesn´t seems to be possible yet...I still have to do it with keyboard arrows...
I've found that the Next/Previous Preset remote command only works reliably with Steinberg instruments - I have some third party ones that will respond to it when the preset list is already open (which is basically useless!), and some which totally ignore it. I suspect this is something that each plugin maker may need to look into, alas....
I found my old M-Audio Oxygen 25 set up fine like others I mapped, except it worked the first time and then didn’t. Even pressing the transport buttons on the controller showed they were mapped right they just didn’t work with cubase or when they did work they became either stuck on or became unresponsive after. But to be fair this old keyboard controller is the only one so far with issues with what I’ve added.
Is there a way to import/export the MAPS (not the scripts, but the MAPS)--things other than the Focus QC and start/stop etc. I'm losing my cc's I've set up meticulously for parameters WITHIN an instruments. In Generic Remote, I could import/export those---is there a way to do that with MIDI Remote?
Unfortunately, this doesn't work with motorised faders (for example on mixing consoles) - The faders lock up as Cubase receives and sends the midi messages, and end up fighting themselves. In 12.10, Steinberg introduced a check box that can disable sending messages back to the hardware, but who'd want a bunch of faders that don't return to where they should be when you rewind, or follow fader moves etc. Will be good when it works though! Looking forward to it.
That's not been my experience with a couple of fader controllers - I think it depends on the internal logic of the controller itself; the Behringer X-touch one has worked without any glitching when doing this, but I remember having similar issues with controllers in Mackie Emulation mode in the past... Hopefully it will get more features (such as translation between input and output signal) without having to resort to the API, which is a much larger kettle of fish/worms.
Hi I have what I believe is every box checked but with Arturia every DAW has a problem I got sound with mouse on keys and no output from Arturia no faders and keys ect…. It’s just not seeing Arturia although it’s definitely seeing my board I. Very confused FL did this untill I found a tiny button called enable tick it and all good in FL I’m guessing CUBASE has a similar thing to click
To answer you question before you as yes I have selected Arturia as input and output everywhere as many videos suggest it something else I’m missing I got Anolog V pulled up and can hear it using mouse just not boards
Hi. I'm not sure which Arturia product you're referring to - hardware? I have a Minilab here I can do some experiments with, but it appears to work fine for me with C12 (and 13). More details may help.
Hello, I wonder if this could be used to design a touchscreen surface within Cubase, and simply not connecting it to any external midi controller. Of course you'll need to connect a touchscreen to your Cubase machine.
I'm not sure about that - I think Cubase would work reasonably well with a touch screen anyway, but I don't have any touch-enabled devices to test it out with.
Are you not able to change the resolution/'fineness' of the controls? E.g. instead of setting a knob to a 0-127 scale, set it to +0.5 value clockwise and -0.5 value counter-clockwise? Can you also not do shift modifiers to change the value? Keep in mind I'm not yet a Cubendo user.
Hi. I may be mis-understanding you, but I don't think there's any need for the change in scale, because the MIDI values (0-127) map onto whatever the range of the controlled control is, so if you had a control which was -0.5 to +0.5, then 0 would map to -0.5 on the control, 63 (MIDI) would map to 0 and 127(MIDI) would map to 0.5. I'm not sure what you mean by shift modifiers?

From a brief look, I don't think the UC1 sends MIDI, so that may be the issue. On the deletion front, I'm doing a video this week on questions that have arisen from this, so I'll put that in there as well...

Excellent as always. I have a hardware delay pedal and few hardware synths that send and receive midi CC. Can I use this to make a plugin controller of the the synths or is it only possible to use the hardware synths as a control surface to change parameters in cubase? If that makes sens? Cheers

Hi, and thanks! I'd think the easiest way to do that would be to alter the XT1's functionality so that it's natively sending that CC. I've actually got the XT1 running with a script I've seen elsewhere for the full X Touch and it works pretty well as a replacement for the Mackie Control mode, with a big advantage.... video upcoming in the mid-future on that... when I get the code a bit neater and couple of little niggles sorted out!

Question...when I assign knobs (like quick control) the knobs do not turn, and when I finally get my remote set up it works for a couple times but then it stops responding. I tried reinstalling cubase 12 with the anti virus off and windows defender off and such but still having same issue. I am trying to map the Native Instruments Komplete S88. Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks again.

what about touch osc or lemur to use on ios devices ? will those work as well ? or better yet is there a native support to something similar without having to install third party “midi servers”? -cheers

Hi Richard. I'm looking at this as there have been quite a few updates since the initial release of Cubase (12.0) which this was based on. Hopefully this will settle down, but there's no roadmap that I'm privy to... But an update is certainly warranted given the new options available. 👍
Great video! Do you if there’s a way to manually add the pitch control (thumbstick) that is shown on the MPK MINI MK3? I own the MK2 and need to add each button & knob manually and I don’t see that particular item listed.
Alas no. It's possible with the MIDI Remote API (that the factory scripts use), and you could copy the factory script and alter it to recognise the MPK Mk2 (something that is upcoming), but using the MIDI Remote setup seen here, there's just knobs, faders and buttons.
How do you add keys in scratch mode like the factory version showed on the first one? I only see knobs, buttons and sliders. I was a little disappointed that my Nektar T4 did not have a pre-loaded script. Hopefully I will be able to figure out how to add it in scratch mode.
You can't add anything other than the controls you mention; the layout stuff such as keys, etc., is only available in the "factory" mode which is programmed using Java files. I'll hopefully get the time to look into doing some videos on this side of things, but it'll be a pretty time-consuming thing, so I'm not sure when I'll get it done...
Many will be "roll your own", or finding one that someone has made - I think support for every hardware device would be pretty hard to achieve without having that hardware. Hopefully Steinberg will create an easy-to-access library of scripts that users have made available.... I think it depends on the dial. If it sends the same message all the time when you turn it in one direction (such as the jog/scrub wheel on a mackie control) then yes it would be. Otherwise, I don't think so. I'm going to do another video soon on setting up various non-obvious things on MIDI Remote, so I'll put that in..
Hi John. Yes, it appears to be now - there were some issues with the betas of C13 as it wasn't handling script errors in the same way, but I believe it all behaves properly now (I had a script I was using that had an incorrect value in it; C12 'fixed' this, but C13 didn't due to the way MIDI2 is handled. That's now fixed, so hopefully other scripts will work OK).
How i can save my map midi control and save as default? When i close session cubase and open new then i press Midi Remote in lower section and there is empty page to create new map,thanks
That should be saved when you create one. It -should- tie the name of the midi device to the controller, so when you plug it back in (even weeks later) it should load up and work straight away. If you click the "Open MIDI Remote Manager" button in the lower zone, and then open the Scripts Tab of the window that appears, you should see the script you created in there (For instance, I see "MPK Mini MK2, AKAI, Darren Jones" in the list for the MPK Mini MK2 script I made, amongst others). If it's not in there, I'm not sure what's happening - quite possible that you've discovered a bug, but there are other things that may be happening. HTH.
@@musictechtuition thank you for response. I restart twice Windows and on third time when I opened lower zone and Midi Remote was my map. I don't know why this but I try yesterday few maps like you show and every single one not saved. I turn off my antivirus in case but looks like this don't affect it. Looks strange for me but at least now is working. Many thanks for your tutorials. I hope your book with Cubase 12 appear soon i prefer book it's much more detailed everything there.

Great Video, is there any way to assign a button to mimic a toggle play/stop assigned to just one button as the space bar does on a windows keyboard? I know I can use two separate buttons (one for play, one for stop) I was hoping to put a toggle on just one button?
Hi Roger. Thanks, and yes, there is. In the Functions Browser, search for 'startstop'. That's the one you want, and it'll do it (although the LED won't reflect the transport state, sadly).
They're VERY old Tannoy Reveals. Passive ones. I've had them since new, and while they're not cutting edge by any stretch of the imagination, I know them really well, so I know I can trust my mixes on them.

Do you know if it's possible to program MIDI CC like CC1, CC7 etc. to faders using MIDI Remote? I would love to program my controller to act both as a controller for the DAW (volume, quick controls etc) but also to control sample libraries using MIDI CC. Thanks!
If your midi controller sends out those CCs then you'll just be able to program them as you mention. You can program for the current "mixer bank slot" with 8 faders-worth of volume using those CCs. I'll add it to the list of "things to cover in the next video"...

I was more so meaning that if my controller (nanoKONTROL) was initially programmed to have the faders send out CC to control expression in my orchestral libraries, it seems that MIDI Remote disables those CC outputs and only lets you map faders on your controller to controlling the DAW (volume, QCs etc). Do you know if there’s a way to let the CCs on the controller “pass through” the MIDI Remote unaffected so they can still control mod wheel, expression etc., while programming the buttons and knobs for transport/QCs, i.e. a mix of CCs and DAW controls? Is Cubase 12 totally different from the 11th version? The reason I'm asking is because only two days ago I was intending to purchase Cubase 11 and get me a big course on it. Now I wonder if it still makes sense to purchase it, learn it and the update to 12, because there are no courses on the 12th yet since it's brand new.
No, it's not totally different. There are some additions, but very little (other than removed synths such as prologue) which is missing. If you get a Cubase 11 book or course, you'll be good to go for 99% of things. I'm in the process of updating my book to Cubase 12; it should be out within a couple of weeks as I'm in the final stages of checking it over and getting proof copies done before release.

I might even not need to get Cubase 11 anymore if you release a book on Cubase 12, and I believe that slowly there will be more video tutorials about it.
