Van Gogh's friend, Paul, is actually Paul Gauguin, another famous painter. Ironically, he could actually sell his paintings unlike his friend. According to some stories, Gogh cut his ear off after they had an argument. But who knows.

I heard of a theory where Paul and Vincent got in an argument over a girl they both coveted. This argument led to Gauguin cutting Vincent's ear off. With Gauguin being the one with more status and Van Gogh having depended on Gauguin up until that point, Vincent decided to cover up for his friend, making up the ridiculous story of cutting off his own ear. This However became one of the most famous stories about Van Gogh, adding to his mysterious and curious legacy.

In "Seasons", we saw the dark figure murder her. So we went back and changed our past so that we didn't do any of the horrible things, and finally restored our true sight back- we saw ourselves as we really are- a beautiful woman. So, what I think is, it wants us to believe we stopped her from getting murdered. But really, we stopped her from killing herself. (hence, the prozac). At least that's what I think :)

Hey John, I personally think the Rusty Lake games should be played in this order: 1. Seasons 2. The Lake 3. Arles 4. Harvey’s box 5. Hotel 6. Case 23 7. The Mill 8. Birthday (You can use your super special “secret” code from Hotel here!) 9. Theatre 10. Roots 11. The Cave 12. Paradise Thanks so much for the mega episode! :D
@merritan_
@merritan_ 6 лет назад
Also, if you really want to get a little bit more involved with the “plot” of this game, I recommend looking up the timelines/time periods of each game! Absinthe is so 'bitter' it is poured through a sugar cube on a spoon. These spoons were designed specifically for this purpose. Really like these type of games. Thank you for playing them. Paul was Paul Gauguin btw.
@arianapadilla9351
@arianapadilla9351 2 года назад
I realize this comment is 4 years old, but why wouldn't they just add sugar to the absinthe instead of going the convoluted way 😂
@rambbler
@rambbler 2 года назад
Also I feel the need to correct the game, you actually pour absinthe first, then place the spoon and sugar, and then you pour cold water over the spoon slowly to make it become a milky color due to the poor water solubility of some of the components of Absinthe, the result is supposed to make the taste better as well. Absinthe is traditionally actually only 1 part absinthe and 3-5 parts cold water.

Sorry if someone has already commented this, but in The Lake you used the alternate green gem you got from putting the code you got in the first game into the lockbox. I think the blue gem is the canonical ending. In the canon ending the shadow thing grabs you, in the alternate ending the light thingy protects you. So not much difference.
@MrServantRider
@MrServantRider 6 лет назад
I guess blocking it is "Changing your fate". I bet the concept is basically like how the series seems to be about changing the past, so using a different gem to stop the thing from grabbing you is to save yourself in the past. I'm only just getting past this part in the video though, and was hoping a comment would explain what the alternate ending would be based on the gem. So I'm glad I found this one!

38:05 John, when you use the blue gem, it gives you more of the lore you seek ;) Well... Basically, the shadow (or corrupt soul) you see in the Seasons who killed the woman on the moon, is the same one that appears at the cabin. The event on the moon is the scene at the cabin. By changing the past (using the green gem), you protect her from the shadow at the cabin and she lives instead of being killed
@Lucia-xt3zm
@Lucia-xt3zm 6 лет назад
Hey John, you missed all the fun part in The Lake chapter! You used the green gem, the one that was optional (as you can acquire it only by remembering the code of Seasons) and it protected you from the shadow-man...if you use the blue gem you get a really creepy puzzle that involves the entire cabin and the shadow-man coming to get you if you're not quick enough By the way, thank you for playing this series, I think it's really peculiar and I'm really fond of it!
@notmrdemo

@Nat_the_Chicken
@Nat_the_Chicken 4 года назад
Yeah, I'm afraid you mixed that up. The only thing that happens with the blue gem in The Lake is that it makes a different shape, and then you turn around and the corrupted soul comes out of the lake and gets you. Cue ending screen with "Play Seasons to find the code and change your fate!" So he didn't miss much. You can see the part you're thinking of in his Case 23 playthrough; it's the part when Mr. Crow takes Dale to the cabin and he finds the old elevator behind the wall.

@LadyBern
@LadyBern 6 лет назад
I've played them and I wouldn't say that things began to make sense given the nonlinear timeline. Even if it was linear it doesn't really make complete sense. The funny thing is I think playing Samsara Room and learning what Samsara meant helped me to understand the Rusty Lake plot better though it's not really a part of the series. I mean I get...I think I get it that it's about obtaining immortality and enlightenment with the family of Paradise experiencing their form of immortality through reincarnation. I'm about to ramble so feel free to skip all of this Hmm if I have this right then Paradise happened first where a family sought to gain immortality through a crude means of sacrifice (perhaps of memories) to the lake(?), the mother found a different way but didn't share it with her family just with her son whom she knew would return. Although the original ritual happens as planned he somehow gains enlightenment and immortality as Jacob and his mom merge into Mr. Owl. The family of Roots learns of this method via the elixir which can give life or death, one lives to become Mr. Crow the other dies (Thinking about it there's an interesting lack of corrupted souls in roots for a good deal of the game or at least they don't seem as aggressive as they act in later games). That whole game is about a sort of ritual for reincarnation along with how messed up the Vanderboom clan is. During this (before the elixir is remade) events of Hotel happens when anthromorphic creatures lived or people who are symbolized by those who are reincarnations of the family members in Paradise. One year after Hotel the corrupted souls break free, everyone made it out except Harvey who became like a normal parrot.. I'm not including the van gogh part because really that didn't really feel like it tied to the rest. But at the end of roots the woman/Laura is born. Laura is the resurrected corrupt soul of William (corrupted souls were more helpful or deceitful before shit went down in Hotel). Okay RAMBLING somewhat done. here's where I start to question the timeline. Are you playing as Laura in the cabin? If so would it make sense that she was lured to the lake retreat to with the paper contest but is that before or after seasons? Is she possessed or corrupted by the soul during that? From there I won't try to keep up with the time line since it goes all over the place from there with Laura being dead but then alive and everything going on with Dale. But I have to say the events of birthday does add to the idea that the people like Mr. Rabbit are reincarnations of some form. But really where does Dale fit into all of this exactly?

It's a reference to a somewhat recurring joke from earlier on in his you tube career (I say earlier on, but I really mean like 0.4-3~ ish years ago, but a short part of his rather long time on this site) The joke is how there was apparently a small, but very vocal minority who thought John was constantly 'holding out' on the later parts of videos with multiple parts, so as to string them on. They concluded that 'he clearly hates his fans'. So being the Good-natured sport he is, he turned it into a joke, where sometimes in his videos, after doing his usual 'Hey guys, it's John' another 'version' of him dressed oddly and wearing glasses would come on and say 'Hey John, it's guys', at which point hilarity would ensue, as guys constantly accuses John of things. (Run-ons for life! -A failure at English) I sadly can't remember any of the videos in which he does this off-hand, but if you look, you'll find them (there was one relatively recently about playing this games where you're in a lineup in a massive red room)

Yeah I remember playing Seasons for the first time and thinking, "Oh hey, it's Satie!" While beautiful, it's a mildly overused piece (not like Pachelbel or anything), and I didn't think it really added much to the mood. I was very happy when they finally stopped using royalty-free piano music and hired a composer, Victor Butzelaar. You can hear his music starting from Hotel and Birthday on to the more recent games (and also on his Bandcamp).

My friend Paul......Paul Gauguin(another impressionism painter)?
@CerrolStein
@CerrolStein 6 лет назад
Yes, Paul Gauguin and van Gogh were friends. They worked together and liked to talk about painting and art, different concepts, the future of art and such. They got into some arguments, tho. Quite intense arguments, since Vincent had mental issues. I'm sorry if my comment was unnecessary, I study art and art history so I like to talk about these things, haha.

John your mind/memory is stupendous.Thank you so much for playing and showing us these game. This little games are so clever and neat. so glad to see games like these. Point and click were popular in the 90s, and its a shame not a lot are being made as much now or if so not put together well. These are what a lot people are missing in the game world. Fun, little simple point and click that make you think and work your mind, while having fun at the same time. Not a lot of games do that today. They want to be all action and must do this, that and the other without you even having time to think and work out why. Can't wait to see more of Rusty Lake.Keep up the awesome work.

Is it just me? Or was there something standing outside the window at 16:48? And again at 19:10? It’s subtle but it’s there.

The cube escape games do tell a story but they're not in order. you'll get more of the story with Case 23 on. The T heather is my favorite one.

Cube Escape/Rusty Lake is one of my favourite series so I'm so happy you're playing it! I admit I didn't really understood the story just from the games, but it intrigued me enough I looked on the wiki to understand I little more. I still think that going on with the series the story becomes "clearer", or at least you start to understand there *is* a story, which is something it's hard to guess from these first games XD

The monster is a symbol of depression. In the first game, youre changing the past so she doesnt murder herself. I was pretty sure and then Van Gogh confirmed it cuz everyone knows he had his own issues. Im so late to jumping on this boat but yeah. Thats my two cents. Aaaand i love that they modeled the room in Arles after the painting Van Gogh made of his room. Keep being awesome, John!

Hey John. I watched you play a bit of Rusty Lake Hotel and then bought it myself + Roots and played all the Cube Escape games in between. The rest of them from here out are good context for the end of Hotel and for Roots. Case 23, Birthday, Theatre, and The Cave are what you're looking for. The Mill is kind of convoluted and doesn't add much plot-wise. Thanks for following through, dude.

Rusty lake hotel is about Vincent van gogh omg it all makes sense even the shadow figures do. Also he slept in a hotel called the rusty lake I think and the room where you see him cut of his ear is the room he painted the bed and all look familiar. I don't know if he shot himself though.
