The @CUBEBikesTV Stereo Hybrid 140 electric mountain bike has been on the market for a while at this point, but so far eluded our testing. When they made the Bosch ABS-equipped model available and offered it for testing, we jumped at the opportunity. How would Anti-Lock Brakes work on technical mountain bike trails, and most importantly could they offer performance gains for experienced mountain bikers? We were excited to find out when testing for this review.

I don't know if I'd want this on my bike, but i would love to try it!

Definitely an interesting thing to try! And who knows, some riders may absolutely love it.

Really interesting and cool tech. I guess my main concern over this and other new tech like auto shifting, etc, is does it make the experience less engaging and disconnected? I never have much problem modulating my shimano brakes but maybe others would enjoy it.

We're somewhat inclined to agree, although in some ways it allows you to focus on the trail ahead and what's happening under the tires a little more? Definitely going to be cool to see where it goes!

Completely agree. Assists like auto shift and ABS might be great for commuters, but I have doubts about their benefits for MTB.

I totally agree with it benefiting more inexperienced and newer riders. I’ve taken a couple buddies to try out MTBing and they all struggle with the shifting and braking aspect (locking wheels, OTB, crunchy shifting). Of course the more you ride the better you get but I’m talking people who only get out a couple times a month or a year 😂

Why are mountain bikes slowly evolving into motorbikes
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Месяц назад
Motorbikes have some well established tech features that may be useful on mtb but without testing and feedback from riders, we won't know... Time will tell.

To raise the price with features nobody asked for.

Motorcross/ Enduro bikes don’t have anti-lock brakes. Street bikes do but they are on asphalt, not dirt. That tech doesn’t translate to dirt and especially on a bicycle

It's not mountain bikes it's ebikes, emtbs, electric motorcycles... It's just another product and the consumer base and needs are different...

@@bfranco1519that's absolutely true, same for 4 wheels

Although this is marketed as an E-MTB, I wouldn't expect to see it on the trails often. It will be used by bike tourers who don't want to ride a typical city-/trekking bike and like this one for the looks. And for that or communiting I'd guess the ABS system is useful since the rider will also not ride a lot in general and will be less experienced.

Well, here in Germany and France the Cube 140 and 160 are EMTB best-sellers and you see them on pretty much every trail. No, the 140 isn't the most radical and capable bike for hammering down the steepest and jankiest trails, but the majority of riders aren't doing that. I bought the bike (in the "Race" specs without ABS) because I am happy on blue and red trails and will not need a super plushy speed machine any time soon.

Can you do some tests with the system in all 3 modes to compare stopping distances on different surfaces? It would be super interesting to see the changes in stopping distance.
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Месяц назад
That is a cool idea and would be fun. If we get another bike with it we'll do that.

ABS isn't usually known to perform well offroad, take that how you want but on loose surfaces ABS increases braking distances...

ABS on a MTB is a big joke

It will certainly be interesting to look back 5-10 years from now and see where bikes are at and if this will be looked at like Shimano Airlines shifting is, or something similar... haha.

Bike ABS is really good idea! But I would like to see also on the rear wheel. I never lock the front wheel so it is kinda pointless to have it there.
@SpencerBaum
@SpencerBaum Месяц назад
The whole point of having it on the front brake is not because someone locks it up or not. A computer can modulate a brake a lot faster and a lot better than a human can, effectively meaning abs can brake a lot harder than you ever could without locking up the front. Having it in the rear would probably be super annoying because locking the rear is actually pretty useful in some circumstances

Stops you Going over Handlebars Also Which is Usefull
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Месяц назад
This, plus the fact that the majority of your weight is on the front wheel during braking. Not convinced the ABS lets you brake harder though, yet...
@LaurentiusTriarius
@LaurentiusTriarius Месяц назад
Good idea for what? The pump track, stopping on loose surfaces isn't the strong point of anti locking brake systems, that's why no dirtbikes or serious off road vehicles use it...
@jokermtb

Nobody in the off-road motorcycle world employs ABS. Mountain bikes don’t need this either, and it’s not a desirable feature for off road action. Even dual sport motorcycles have ABS disable switches to turn it off when off-road. This is pointless application of technology that belongs on tarmac, not dirt trails.

This is the dumbest thing ever on a mtn bike…

How so?
@BiecherBender

The number of people I have seen riding these bikes with a rack as a touring bike really shows that there is a place for this. Maybe not on the trail, or maybe not right now on the trail. Who knows…

The bike is pedaling for you and braking for you, why not just buy a VR headset for 10% of the cost and just watch POV mountain bike footage?
