Cugir WASR10/63: Not A Preban But The Best Romanian AK Imported? (Vacation Chat)

We're still getting some R&R, but something a bit neat came into the shop today, so it seemed like a good idea to do a casual & fun vacation chat. We received in a new-in-box example of the Romanian Cugir WASR-10/63, untouched & in storage since at least 2013.
The WASR10/63 hasn't been imported in over half a decade, and these rifles were assembled from original Romanian military PM-63 parts by Cugir using a new semi WASR type receiver. Trunnion dates ranged from the 1960s through the end of the Communist era. Because of this, some people over the years have mistaken these for 'preban' imports. While this isn't true, it is possible that the WASR10/63 is the best Romanian semi-auto AK ever imported?

I paid $475 for my WASR 10/63 in 2009. The sights were perfect, honestly pretty accurate for what it is. Tiny bit of mag wobble but nothing really that noticeable. Haven't had a single hiccup out of her yet. Mine came with 4 Tapco mags, bayonet, pouch, sling, cleaning kit etc. Maybe I just got lucky, but I love that rifle, almost as much as my VEPR.

Its my understanding that current production WASR-10's are made in the same production plant as Cugir's military AK's and the new WASR-10 production parts are the exact parts used in Cugir's military AK's which they produce under contract for military's of other countries. This makes sense because it would be very costly to produce two separate sets of parts for essential the same rifle minus the fun switch on the civilian version. When you buy a WASR-10 what you're really getting is a rifle produced from military production parts and is no different than the ones Cugir produces for their military version. The WASR-10 is one of the few if not the only AK that is produced today by an actual military arms manufacturer, I think we are lucky to still be able to get them, for how long remains to be seen. Of course the prices have gone up considerably since I bought mine and you get less accessories with them and crappy blonde wood furniture but that can be replaced with surplus furniture

All wasr10s are military grade or milspec and are still kind of affordable I'm buying a second one my local FFL has one that's been sitting in there shop for a year at $900, I personally like the wasrs only Bec they're just better for the average person and most of the arsenal AKs, polish AKs and preban AKs are just wall art to me tbh nothing I'd ever own Bec that's what I see em as, I like the wasrs they're the perfect shtf AK

I dont care what anybody says, I love my WASR 10/63. Its built like a tank, accurate and reliable. I put about 3k rounds through mine mostly with irons and I never have a problem hitting my target up to and even a little further than 300m. They are easy to use and easy to maintain. I love the 7.62x39 caliber round as well. Its effective and fun to shoot and up until recently super cheap. Luckily I stocked up when you could still get the spam cans of russian ammo for dirt cheap. I have more than a lifetime of ammo for it and probably will.never have to buy another round for it. Parts are cheap and most fixes can be done by the garage gunsmith. If your thinking of picking one up I say go for it. I dont think you'll be sorry.

Thanks for another great video! Love hearing you reminisce over AKs imported during the Clinton AWB and after! I bought a WASR10/63 in 2007-8 for about $350 and still love it. It looks identical to the one you just got in - wood furniture, tack welded muzzle nut (which I fixed) and ground down bayonet lug. Sure, the magwell is sloppy and I had to adjust the front sight to the end of its travel but the darn thing shoots cheap ammo just fine. And runs and runs. Over the years I had to endure with "what a piece of crap" comments which gradually changed to "can I shoot it" then "hey will you sell it?" I always say, "Hell no. Not for sale!" It's still my only AKM.

I just added an RH-10 to my collection a few weeks back. It wasn't at the $439 price point that my Wsar 10/63 was but those days are long gone. The furniture was trash so I swapped it out with a Romy G kit I had laying around and have been pretty happy with it. I figured I'd go ahead and get it now because they're all subject to going away and aren't getting any cheaper. Good overview of a fine weapon!

This is pretty much the as my WASR 10/63, but mines dated 1971 or 1973.. However it has a threaded muzzle, with the standard slanted muzzle break or cap.. An it DOES have the bayonet lug or attachment.. Pretty sure it doesn't have any dimples on the mag well, but the wood is the same nicer wood. An has the stamped symbols, it's probably not pre-ban .. I like the wood on it, I would Shellaq / shellack however it's spelled.. I need Misha to diagnose the history of mine lol. I have a WASR GP10/63 that I bought in either 2005 or 2006 for $325, with all the goodies. It's had a Tapco furniture kit on it for years, but I still have the original wood furniture for it. The front sight is still canted, and I hate the fact that the muzzle is welded with no brake attachment or threads. It was also picky with ammo when I first got it, but it was probably just cheap, bad ammo. I have since switched exclusively to brass or zinc-plated steel cases. And no HPs either....FMJ only. I've been thinking about selling it.....it would certainly be a good return on my investment with all of the ammo and mags that I have for it, as well as the original mags and pouch/cleaning kit. I think I could probably get $1,000 for it if I tried. Not sure what I want to do though.

They aren't lesser quality. Some inexperienced people might say that online because they have some buddy who owned a Romanian parts kit once, but they aren't lesser quality. I have a 1988 without the triangle and arrow proof as well, and I've owned them from the 1960s & 1970s with the proof. There are a lot of theories people make up online as to why, and most of these theories are wrong. Fact is Cugir simply started phasing that marking out in the 1980s. They stopped putting it on everything from semi-auto exports to select fire military contract weapons. Magazines too, they stopped putting that marking on in the 1980s. They still build Kalashnikov's for military contract and they do not have the triangle arrow marking.

I would say objectively speaking if we're talking about a modern productions estaba zpapers a modern production washer than the z-pap is a superior rifle because it has the Chrome lined bore , it has a thickened rpk style receiver and the fit and finish is usually Superior to any wasr. The washer is still a very fine rifle but I would say even as a wasr owner that the zpap is a slightly better rifle.

Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next videos. On another note I have to say that my first ak was my wasr 04 model first of the wasr it even came with the psl stock and a forward dong. I have since swapped out for the standard romanian stock and pistol grip so it looks very similar to yours. I am on my seventh ak purchase with this 6.5 grendel. Looking forward to a different caliber i am happy that it is developed from 7.62x39 just a necked down cartridge case, something different but still in the family. Hopefully coming in monday😆

I was looking at those rifles on Atlantic's website not too long ago myself. I actually wound up buying the Vepr .308 from them. After purchasing, I had second thoughts on whether I should have gone for the 7.62x54R instead...ahhh decisions decisions. Crazy expensive, but I wanted a rifle that shot .308 so I went for it, and who knows how long the inventory is going to be out there. Enjoy your rifle.

@@markgillis6162 thanks i think you picked the right caliber. There are more loadings for .308 and overall it is a more modern round with out the taper and rim issues you get from the antiquated 7.62x54r. The fact that it's a soviet cartridge is the only advantage.

@@TexasHellcat1836 The ZPAP is better quality. Some have had funky rivets and such, but those were quickly and easily remedied under warranty. Wasrs are "good enough". I have a 1979 10/63 that's just phenomenal. But I wouldn't exactly say it beats the WASR 10 I have because the 10 is just stupid accurate. I get pretty decent accuracy from all my AKs, except for the fucking Riley Defense RAK74 but I don't want to talk about that. But that GP10 has always been a great shooter for me. I had to save it, some young guy had it, had horrible green Tapco furniture on it. Looked horrible. I put a nice side folding stock on it with a Midwest Industries foregrip with a Burris Fast Fire III and 2 chamber muzzle brake. Now it's cherry. But I'd still rather have my Saiga 74.

Romanian guy here! Fitst of all let me tell you that I'm jealous that you yankees get to shoot these fine weapons while we here in Romania don't have acces to them. The only chance would be to join the Army (which I did in 2003). The good news (for you at least) is that while RoArmy was downsizing in the early 2000s, leaving a lot (and I mean A LOT!) of rifles without soldiers (rifles that were sold in US, I think), the bad news is that (according to rumors, at least) the US govt is buying al the milsurp from Romania, in addition to orders placed with the Cugir weapons factory.

It makes me laugh that, maybe 10 or so years ago, every AK forum trashed the WASRs and treated them like garbage level, bottom of the barrel rifles. This was back when you could still readily get them for $400-450. Now they're regarded as quality imported rifles and heralded as one of the best AKs. How times change.
@Mikhail-Tkachenko
@Mikhail-Tkachenko 4 года назад
Here lately the online AK community has unfortunately become overrun with elitist pricks now that AK's have gotten so expensive in the US. Mostly guys who own Arsenal, Saiga, and Vepr AK's in 5.45 that they bought back when they were only $600 - $1000, and now that those guns are going for $3000+ on GunBroker they think of themselves as part of the 1% wealthiest in the nation & anyone who isn't willing to pay $3000 for a semi-auto AK isn't "worthy enough" to own an AK. They started a little "stop being poor" club & had a run of stickers & velcro patches made which say "stop being poor" that they put on their AK magazines, furniture, plate carriers & such. The WASR catches a ton of hate from that club, so it has caused the AK community to become divided into two groups: those who like the WASR's and those who only like Arsenal, Saiga, Vepr, Chinese, and preban Hungarian imports. It's funny because they tout themselves as being "rich", but anytime they put up pics of their AK's they're always at public ranges & such. None of them have their own range. On their forum I put up a pic of my WASR 10/63 I've owned for 10 years now and in the background was my personal 1200m range setup on the 205 acres of land I own. I tried having a conversation with one of the "stop being poor" club members about Kalashnikov's, basically talking about build quality, fit & finish, and so on. I was in Donetsk Ukraine in 2014/2015 as part of a volunteer battalion which had approximately 600 men at that time. Many of whom had never even fired a rifle. Thus I was tasked with teaching some of the men about the rifles they were issued which were primarily Russian made AK-74 & AKM variants. Many of them were built during the Soviet era & we had a few which were built in Romania as well. We even had an Albanian ASh78-1 in storage which I was *very* intrigued by since I have a specific interest in Albanian produced equipment. Showing them how to field strip, clean & lubricate them as well as how to use the sights, estimate range, & how to use the elevation settings. So this gave me the opportunity to handle + examine many different Kalashnikov variants which were actual select fire military issue rifles. I can say that a select fire Russian/Soviet made stamped AKM variant is built to a very similar standard to that of the WASR 10/63 rifles I have also handled. Which of course makes perfect sense as the "Cugir" factory in Romania was setup to build Kalashnikov's under the Soviet regime. Their tooling & training was provided by the Soviet Union, and the rifles they produced were/are built to Soviet specs. The two Romanian Kalashnikov's I was able to look at were PM Md. 63's which is the 1.0mm stamped receiver, fixed stock, 7.62x39 variant. Basically an exact clone of the Soviet AKM. The parts all interchange between the Romanian & Soviet variants. Once again, build quality was identical to that of the semi-auto Kalashnikov's which are built in Romania for export to the US commercial market. Of course for the WASR 10/63 this makes sense as those were built from demilled PM Md. 63 rifles.
