Probably the same amount of time or even less as they were a business and had many workers/apprentices. Armor-making shops were usually by a river and had water wheels to power mechanical presses and hammers as seen in this video. In another video, it is shown how eight metal buckets are mass-produced together by stacking eight sheets of metal in a high-powered press. Mercenary-grade helmets and breastplates could have been mass-produced with such techniques.

It took one hell of a beating before it failed, very impressive. Was that based on late 16th century armor?

It has the characteristics of a munition cuirass, italian export manufacture of the milanese style, second half of the 15th century, circa 1450-1480. Normally they use a leather strap to join the placard to the breastplate on the chest, but on munition grade cuirass and italian cuirass made in the german style it's riveted, it provide less mobility, but is a stronger, quicker and cheaper option. On more high end cuirass the edge arround the armpit and the neck would be rolled over to form for example a triangular ridge, not just raised as it is, and there would be more decorations. It is a purely fonctional armor without anything fancy added to keep the manufacure time and the price down. It's the kind of cuirass a medium income member of a city militia or a men at arms of the retinue of a knight might use during the end of the hundred years war or during the war of the roses. In short, it's for Guys rich enough to buy (or lucky enough to recieve from thier lord) plate armor sold by a merchant but not so much as to get thier hands on bespoke, made to mesurement harness from an armorsmith. During the last half of the 15th, he munition cuirass is a basic upgrade to the kit a soldier with means would get himself after a helmet, a jack, and a shirt of mail. (In that order, dictated by essential need for protection and price, note that newly made mail was more expensive than plate during the 15th century, but scince mail was in constant use by knights and soldiers during the middle age there were lots of hand me down and second hand mail shirt on the market for a lower price). An alternative would be a brigandine, but thier qualities were not constant, as they were usually made from recycled plates of armor cut to shape. Plus they protect less than plate against polearms blunt trauma, and even against longbow arrows if the metal used is not tempered. Italian munition armors were mass produced on an quasi-industrial scale and exported thus a less costly option and quicker to make and deliver to the client, but still of excellent quality, most beeing made with tempered steel by that time. Think of it as the medieval equivalent of "the best bang for your bucks". Richard III himself ordered quite a few sets of complete milanese export armors to arm his knights.

I just wonder if it can even be representative of period armors given the difference between modern steels and historical ones, and that they've likely used a modern alloy. Plus don't forget that tempering won't be as precise in comparison to this one.

@@jonajo9757 "Modern steel" includes mild steel - basically, steel witch is just iron and carbon, with no other alloy, and with a reasonably low carbon content. It is the steel most commonly used by modern armorsmiths, because it is actually quite a good aproximation of medieval steels (and of or wrought iron). So nope, the armor being impervious to arrows is not because of "cheaty modern materials". It's because armor was (surprise!) good at protecting the wearer. If you expected it to be penetrated by arrows as it it was ade of wet cardboard, it's because you have read too much British archer propaganda ;-)

I'm sorry if this was asked already, but what guage was the shot gun? Were those slug rounds? Without a doubt one of the strongest breast plates I've ever seen. The only one I saw as good was a group who made a double breast plate from bloom iron. They said that the pattern of the steel fluff made layers of overlapping patterns that made it closer to Kevlar. I doubted your heat treat at first after watching Forged In Fire, but I was a fool to doubt you. That was incredible.

I don't understand why some plackarts are rigidly attached to the breast plate. Isn't some movement and play between the two pieces supposed to prevent the top of the breast plate from hitting the wearer in the neck and improve range of motion?

I would love to see you design and/or build a full bullet proof armour. There is a company that claims they can stop rifles with 2mm of special steel. With that alloy I bet you could make something amazing.

0:20 Разновидности термообработки стали 30ХГСА Закаливание. Процедура, направленная на улучшение характеристик поверхностного слоя стали. Сталь 30ХГСА закаливается при температуре 880С и подвергается охлаждению в масле, чтобы не допустить нежелательных структурных изменений. Отпуск. Закаливание стали меняет ее структурные характеристики. После такой внутренней перестройки может возникнуть напряжение, приводящее к трещинам. Чтобы не допустить этого, таль 30ХГСА подвергают отпуску при температуре 540С. Для охлаждения можно использовать воду. Ковка. В результате ковки структура металла становится более прочной. Сталь 30ХГСА куют после нагревания до 1240С и охлаждают на открытом воздухе. Прокаливаемость стали 30ХГСА сравнительно невысока, она составляет всего 24-40 мм глубины прокаливаемого слоя. Твердость стали невысока 45-50 HRC. Преимущества и недостатки Как и любая марка стали, 30ХГСА обладает набором особенностей, определяющих сферы ее применения. У нее есть как сильные стороны, так и уязвимости, ограничивающие ее использования в определенных условиях. В ряде случаев недостатки можно нивелировать с помощью дополнительной обработки тепловой, химической или нанесения защитного покрытия на поверхность изделия. Преимущества: ударная вязкость высокая способность стали противостоять динамическим нагрузкам; твердость объясняется высоким содержанием углерода в составе стали; износоустойчивость устойчивость к переменным нагрузкам, особо ценное качество стали 30ХГСА, сделавшее ее незаменимой в самолетостроении; хорошая свариваемость; высокая сопротивляемость постоянному тепловому воздействию (до 400С). Недостатки: Низкая прокаливаемость небольшая глубина изменений при закалке; Флокеночувствительность подверженность образованию внутренних трещин, снижающих механические показатели; Коррозионная подверженность сталь нельзя использовать в условиях повышенной влажности или прямого контакта с водой без гальванического покрытия или других защитных мер.

If that's 3mm thick 1030 steel, an oil quench won't give you complete transformation

Yeah, but a lot of modern reproduction armor is on the thicker side for safety reasons, since most people will either be using it for a tournament or just walking around at a Ren fair or similar (where the extra weight would matter less) with it on.

May i ask u a question? why do u dip into water after the tempering ? ive told to let the steel rest in air or sand after that. The proof is that it works, but id like to know the knowledge behind what i see. thx

It hardens the metal, although water is a lot more harsh, water makes the steel very brittle, oil is a lot more lax. So oil is the best way. I'm not sure if that's what he uses or not. But steel only can become hard in oil or water if it has carbon in the steel.

Quenching from the tempering temperature prevents temper embrittlement in steels which are prone to it - some low alloy, carbon steels can become embrittled from tempering because of the slow segregation of impurities to grain boundaries after the tempering cycle allows them mobility. A water quench prevents this.

@@judahmills1731 I don't think the poster was asking about quench hardening. They were asking why the tempered breastplate isn't just placed in still air after tempering. It's good practise to swiftly cool during both operations, to eliminate the risk of temper embrittlement in some low alloy steels.

Finnaly a well made plate armor designed for battleground and not some sucking parade armor made of tin paper. Historically able to stop anything, completely sword and arrow proof Some historical plate armors were designed to stop flintlock rifle hits too, but not absorb the impact, smashing your internal fleshy also if not penetrated

If you hold the hammer lower it will give you harder blows without having to expend so much energy which will save your arms in the long term. This is the reason hammers have such long handles.
