Nice work Slava! I used to wear a barbute like this in swordfights. But my big nose was sticking out, and one time I got hit by a buckler and broke my nose.
A simple but beautiful helmet! Bonus points for making it from one piece! Definitely must have required a lot of patience to shape all that metal. Well done! Can’t wait to see what you make next!
An absurd amount of work, I can’t imagine dealing with the steel wigging out with every strike and deforming. Mad respect for you and the finished product is impeccable.
Where did you learn your craft? As someone who grew up in the SCA community I really want to get into blacksmithing and armor smiting. Are there classes specifically for making armor?
A fantastic helmet, congratulations, craftsmanship at its best. I have always been facinated with the musem suits of armour of both ordinary man at arms and those of the wealthy. There are some intriguing questions, duplication by more than one smith, were there any standard patterns and size gauging or quality contol? Obviously the medieval smiths did not have the advantage of acetyene and ready available materials as per todays suppliers, so where did their raw material come from? If the smith had to start with a block of steel, progress would be extremely slow and the war over before the first replacement helmet was available. Have you any history on the basic subject and logistics please. regards Richard
