I love the way you describe those ancient stone monuments. You share the facts and don't add opinions as facts, as so often done in the USA by factless history revisionists.
Atmospheric music Willie well done .. respectful coverage of a very wounding landscape which needlessly cost the blood of so many brave men who followed their heart's and not their heads . The Stewart"s were a bloody family who over many years cost this country ( Scotland and Parliamentary England ) dearly .. just.my opinion .. a family who would unite our Kingdom eventually . James V1 of Scotland and 1st of Britain . 🇬🇧
My husband and I were very lucky to have visited The Battle of Culloden site and the Clava Cairns. I found the battlefield eerie, as if the dead were still present. I loved the cairns. I love standing stone circles, having seen my first in Wales. I was pleased to have the peace after visiting the battlefield. It was nice to relive this visit while watching this video.
What atrocities mankind visits on mankind, all for greed of territory and power and it's still going on today 😞 However your video was a pleasure to watch, the scenery is so beautiful and your painting is stunning! Love the outtakes! 😁💗 x
That musicial theme goes so well with Sarah's walks . It has a bit of a prancing theme, like a fine show horse. Meant as a big complement, ❤not to be taken wrong please.
Thank you for sharing it makes me feel sad at the thought of all of those beautiful people all being killed , being a proud Scottish man I think that there's no place more beautiful in the world . Take care ❤
Started watching your channel sometime after the Holidays of 2022/2023. It's now nearly March 2023. I've been watching an episode a day! I am saving this episode for when I finally do get down to planning a trip to Scotland. 4000 years. My ancestors are from Scotland. To think of their lives 4000 years back. Interesting seeing Culloden Moor through your eyes. (KNEW you'd choose to paint the thistle. Who can resist a thistle in bloom!)
As an American, it might be hard to understand how sorrowful I find the history of Culloden, except that I understand the longing for freedom and the preserving of a culture. Scotland and the repercussions of the loss are heartbreaking. The attempted destruction of their lifestyle and then the Highland clearances were and are devastating. There is a spirit at Culloden that makes one want to whisper. So sad.
Thanks so much for sharing your gorgeous video- Special music and your simply amazing art. You make the world a much lovelier place! We will be visiting Inverness/Scotland for the first time, and it’s a dream come true. Thank you and Willie for making it extra special…
I have visited Culloden on several occassions. Never had the great weather you had. It is a dark place and suits the evemts that took place there. You handled the commentary on the site with great calm and reverence. The picture of the thistle is excellent
Sarah you are a very talented artist! The thistle painting is BEAUTIFUL! I really enjoyed your walk and the history you shared with us, thank you. Every video I’ve watched has made me giggle at Jack’s antics and expressions, he is so adorable.
Scotland is such a beautiful, evocative place! Maybe next up on my bucket list. I visited Stonehenge this past April and was blown away, just imagining what they’ve been witness to in a way. The thistle is gorgeous, and seems especially poignant after visiting Culloden. Thank you for taking us along!
Ahh you should most definitely visit if you can Elizabeth! I’ve visited Stonehenge before and it is incredible. I actually volunteered at the summer solstice before I moved to Scotland, which was amazing. But the stone circles in Scotland are even more atmospheric I think and a lot less crowded 😊
@@shewalksshepaints Maybe next Spring! My husband has been, years ago before we met, and he loved it. We spent quite a bit of time hiking in the Yorkshire Dales, and in the Lakes district. One bucket list trip for me involves hiking the length of Hadrians wall. Sigh. So many trips, so little time!
Lovely video of a very historic location! I am an Outlander fan, and the stone circle was really interesting to see, too. I have done a 1 day Outlander filming location tour a few years ago, but this wasn't on the tour, so it was nice to see through your walk. Love the thistle!
I visited Culloden and Clava Cairns in 1997. Also drove to Dunvegan Castle from Inverness and got a little turned around and drove on a cattle track (occupied by shaggy highland cattle) and by a wonderful crofter’s house. I’m 73 now and marvel at my courage in driving in the Highlands as an American driver. It was my journey of a lifetime. Wishing you the best .
Culloden 😢😢😢, I’m English and the battle of culloden never fails to reduce me to tears. I have such mixed feelings about it, as with all wars there are winners and losers, it isn’t that the Jacobites lost the battle but we as the English did after that. We literally stole, raped pillaged and stamped out the highland way of life, stamped out their mother tongue (Gaelic) stamped out the wearing of tartan. I am always so torn between the need to stamp out and prevent any further uprising and the shear brutality and Genocide (in my opinion) of it all. War is only ever really told from the side of the winner so I am so thankful to outlander for bringing this to my attention because it really made me look into it deeper. And thank you for this exemplary video. Beautifully done, beautifully voiced over, respectful and unbiased. I love your art, is there anyway I can purchase directly from you to help prevent the colossal cost Etsy charge you as the seller? X
I know this sounds like a stupid request but I am sincere. I would love for you to do an audio of the sounds around you and Willie’s channel. The birds oh my goodness, waves and waterfalls for like a meditation CD. It seem so relaxing. Most of us have noisy roads or businesses. I love watching you both, but it would make for a great listening when I can’t watch. lol yep maybe I am crazy. Ha
Yep, been there, first time after reading the books, before the show, once after the show. The grass grows poorly over the clan graves. I didn't see those particular standing stones, but I did experience several others over my 2 trips to Northern Scotland. I'm hoping that I still have enough time (at 71!) and money to visit Norway & Northern Germany, lands of my Great-grandparents, so that I can quit fantisizing about Scotland...unforgettable land & people.---What a great quote..."just out of reach of our understanding".
Thanks Alana! Hoping you get out to visit those places - all amazing with fascinating history too 😊 There are so many amazing stone circles in Scotland a especially on the islands. I can’t wait to visit and share them!
I gave this print to my dear friend to commemorate our visit there from the US. To be able to also share the video is wonderful and the memories we had marching about in Scotland is a wonderful bonus. Thank you so much!
Sarah, another fantastic painting. I am surprised that Jack Spaniels didn't get into that small pool of water. I love hearing about the history of Scotland. 🥰🌻🐕🇺🇸
Thanks Guadalupe! Actually, Jack did get in the clootie well…he doesn’t seem to have any ailments, so I can only assume it will give him super powers haha 🤣
Hi, thanks for another walk showing the history and beauty of Scotland, I could almost feel the wind as it blew through the trees and smell the heather of the moorland. Beautiful details on the thistle you really achieved the 3D effect so well. Have a great week.
❤ love the scenery, the beautiful flowers. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of the areas you visit. And, yes, Willie deserves a huge thanks for the new music.
Absolutely stunning work on the thistle, Sarah! When you add in those darks to amp up the contrast, it really brings the picture to life. Difficult to walk through the battlefield (or watch as you do it) and not feel sadness for the terrible loss for Scotland and its clans. The walk through the 4,000 year old standing stones and cairns was awe-inspiring. As you said, the skilled work going into moving and raising those stones and building the cairns is impressive.
Wonderful, Willie's music almost sent me to sleep. I think thats what we will call him from now on!! I did'nt mean it like that, I was so interested in the lovely place and it was so relaxing so thank you Sarah, Jack and wonderful Willie!!! Wish I could paint like that.
I hike a lot in the states and I love that I feel I am hiking with you. Scotland treated these locations with such respect, keeping it native plantings and peaceful. I hope I can visit someday, but in the meantime, you’ve taken me on a wonderful journey. Thank you. 😊
Thank you Sarah for a great walk full of history. Culloden is an awesome place, lve visited twice, once when a child and then with two of my children about 44yrs ago. We saw the Fraser clan stone shown in your video, quite moving to see it again. My paternal granny was a Fraser, and we saw the three other clans associated with my parents. Another lovely painting to finish. I always smile seeing Jack busying about on the walk.......Alioban
Interesting history to learn of the battle of Culloden. You would never think a bloody battle took place there. So neat to see the stones just like in the movie Outlander. The whistle painting came out great. Love the purple color.
Haha thanks Sue! I was very careful not to touch the stones (not for fear of meeting Jamie Fraser, but because I used to work for Historic Scotland and I’m worried about the damage 😅) Besides I already have my braw Scotsman 😜
When I go to a battlefield here in the US, there is a heaviness to the place as if I can physically feel the weight of the tragic loss of lives on both sides. On a brighter note, thanks for taking us there. Your thistle painting is very well done, and I am pleased you chose it for this painting.
I just had a fantastic idea! When I get back on my feet financially, Im going to start ordering your art and am going to put a sign over the door that says "Scotland Yard"!! That's probably as close as I will ever get to Scotland but I can live with that! Thank you once again and hats off to Willie for the music! 🎶🌞🌴
The thistle was the perfect tribute and selection for your beautiful artwork. Truly stunning! Thanks for the history, the adventure and the beautiful new music. Jack Spaniel is always a joy too! Love watching that little guy and the drone footage.
Enjoyed learning the history though sombre. It's good for us to remember the harsh times of our ancestors and showing respect. Loved your painting of the thistle and you even answered a question I've been thinking lately - how long it takes to do one of your watercolours. I wasn't surprised at the hours it takes. Watching the speed version makes it look so easy! Thanks for doing these walks and your paintings.
As always a beautiful walk Sarah, so full of ghosts. The history just takes my breath away. Thank you and Willie(and of course Jack)for taking us with you, I so look forward to it each week. Gorgeous painting too❤️x
Very nice walk and history lesson again. Jack seems to be a wee bit head strong today, or maybe always, but he always seems to be a good boy. Thanks for the walk and music. Loved the painting. Give Jack his scratch from me please and you guys have a great week. Til next time. Bye 🥰
Thanks Tina! Consider Jack well and truly scratched behind the ears 😀👍 He is always pretty “headstrong” when he has to go on the lead…all he wants is to be running free to be able to pick up sticks and pee on ancient monuments..😫🤦♀️
Always worth visiting in the different seasons, was up again in May, never ceases to be moving and thank you for your respect. Wallace the westie on the other hand tried to drink form the well !!
I watched your video late last night after helping my uncle move house, it was a welcome reward for a busy day. This was a very touching, thoughtful video, Culloden seems a place that would give you all sorts of feelings to visit. I looked on my bug identifier app, and the bug you asked about is a 'Four banded longhorn beetle'. I absolutely loved your thistle too, I'd have imagined it was a challenge to paint all the individual wee tufts, but of course, you did it beautifully. Thank you for helping me unwind last night, your video was a treat to watch, and thanks for another beautiful video and painting. 🤗 I'm off to watch Willie now, I was too shattered to watch anything else lol, first Sunday I've missed one of his videos 🤫👀😂
Your channel is so fresh and special!!! I love your art! You have such an eye, and the ability to use color! It seems like the pieces could be lifted right off the paper! Thank you for sharing your gifts! I also enjoy Willie's channel. His music is exceptional! You are both such treasures, and that marvelous Jack Spaniel!!!!!
I got the chills and a bit choked up at Culloden. It was a short brutal battle and so many lives were sacrificed in vain. There really is a huge juxtaposition between the beauty of the field and its sad history. Thank you for sharing this place in such a thoughtful way, Sarah. The standing stones are so massive. I always wonder how the ancients moved them an inch, let alone built anything with them?
Awesome scenery as always, loved hearing the wind in the trees ( and Willie's music). Also love the "outtakes at the end 😄. Stunning thistle Sarah. Thanks to all three of you!
Your painting is beautiful as the Thistle itself. I was told that parts of the thistle can be safely eaten. Dried thistles are also beautiful in dried flower arrangements. Thistle grows here in Kentucky. It is not a native plant. My father said it came into Kentucky during the Civil War. Hay was brought from Canada to feed the Union's horses during the winters. Kentucky was divided during the Civil War. When I asked my father which way his people went (North or South during the Civil War), he told me they took back the old ways; and, they moved so deep into the woods that no one knew they were out there.
Wow - so much amazing family history! Must have been fascinating to find out about that. Thistles are amazing plants - it’s so interesting to read more about them. Dried thistles are often used in stately homes here to prevent people from sitting on antique chairs, because they are so spiky!
Great video. Very relaxing to watch, and it brings back memories of my visit to Schotland in 1993. Great painting of the thistle too, such beautiful flowers.
Amazing walk and history lesson too, love the music and your painting is beautiful. Take care and thank you very much for sharing this beautiful countryside and history 👍👏❤️
I really appreciated this video. I have the Stewarts on my paternal side and the Frasers on my material side. Love all the history and beauty of Scotland. Your thistle is a touching remembrance of the battle of Culloden. Well done & thank you.
When we visited for our 3oth wedding anniversary ( we passed our 51st on May 1 this year) we went to Culloden battlefield and the stone circle and cairn that you shared here! I love that thistle! i had no idea there were so many types!
Glad to hear your paintings take a long time too 😂 My oil paintings can take 20 hours over a large period (drying times etc). What a special place! Standing stones always amaze me too. Jack causing chaos is brilliant 😂
According to paused image at 9:38 and Goog** Lens, it could be Leptura Quadrifasciata (whatever those eat when we are not looking) ;-) Four-Banded Longhorn Beetle. Always lovely walking along :-) :-) Thanks you
Thanks Michael! I think you got it right 😊 It was quite a surprise to find it. Not used to seeing insects like that here, but glad to find out it is native to the UK 😊 I need to work out how to google images - that would help me a lot on these walks haha!
Very interesting and beautifully shown. Only just started watching Outlander. Last time we visited we often found ourselves in places used by the show by chance but although we always visit as many stone circles and the like as possible we missed this one! Maybe because we knew Culloden was very sad! We were more Harry Potter driven lol! Thanks so much.
While it was a beautiful walk-through Culloden, I am entranced by your creative painting. The Creeping Thistle appears to sprout right out of the paper! I missed commenting on your New Year's video, and the fishing. I apologize. I was carried away with the scenery. I did, however, look up Scottish Steak Pie, and added it to my recipe book. I will create a Tradition for us with this on my Birthday June 30...mid-year celebration I share with one of my granddaughters! 💜💙
The battle of Culloden is indeed a famous and sad part of Scottish history. Thank you for the walk through such beautiful scenery and the history, your painting is exquisite I love the traditional Scottish thistle, such a big beautiful plant.
Thanks Catherine! I’m hoping to do paintings of all the different thistles that we get here at some point. I never knew there were so many different ones 😊
Hard to imagine that beautiful area a battlefield, sad history. Beautiful painting! You have lots of talent! The beetle is Leptura quadrifasciata a Longhorn beetle in the family Cerambycidae.
@@shewalksshepaints yep true, it reminds me of Gettysburg here, beautiful area that was once a raging battlefield where so many young men were lost in battle. I am curious do they let you metal detect around such areas?
Thank you so much for sharing Scotlands history with us. A beautiful and tragic place the battlefield is. So many lives lost. You did an amazing job on the thistle. It is beautiful.
I usually end with a comment about your painting (chronological order being my thinking), but this time I have to start with it. This is now my favorite painting of yours (after just declaring that last week, I know!). This is without a doubt the best painting, drawing, or even photo of a thistle I've ever seen. I'm in love with it. You mentioned that you wanted it to be more muted than your other paintings and I think that's what I love about it. The muted tones you chose just make it stunning.. It's so beautiful! I haven't been to Scotland yet. I think I've mentioned before that I was planning a trip there prior to the pandemic, but that has yet to happen. However, if I had been there I would have wanted to bring home some sort of "thistle souvenir" for sure. Now I know what I would want it to be. That painting would be perfect printed as a postcard (picture on the front and space to write on the back with the "Stamp" square). I should think every souvenir shop at any of the places you've visited (and helped make popular) would buy them from you. Perhaps some of those adorable coffee houses you've visited that appear to also be shops. If not postcards, then full-size prints. I would buy either one from a gift shop just because it's beautiful. But, knowing that it is from a local artist would add to the appeal. Just a thought... Sorry, I couldn't help myself. 🤭 Of course I enjoyed the walk as well, it was very poignant. You handled it well, your show of respect for what it was, yet appreciating it's current beauty. Thanks for making the note about watching the out-takes to see the other side of your surprised look at Jack being there. That was so cute! Thank you very much for another great video. 😊
Aww thank you so much! This comment means so much to me 😊 I loved this painting - I think it might be my favourite so far too! It’s definitely in the plan to have my prints or maybe cards stocked somewhere here in Scotland. Time will tell! I hope you manage to get your trip to Scotland. It’s such a wonderful place to visit 😊 The bloopers are one of my favourite parts to edit haha! Mostly it’s just Jack being Jack, but it’s too good not to share! Thanks again and see you next week! xx
Thanks to you Sarah for bringing to life those beautiful and historical places in Scotland that I (Ian) have only read about in encyclopedias and other books. The highlands have always been my favorite part of your country. Ian
Thank you for showing us through the Culloden Battlefield, it was very moving and hope to visit there myself some day 🥀 Beautiful work on the painting of the thistle, love watching it come together. Of all the thistles they decided to bring to Australia, why did they not choose this one instead of the nasty spiky one! 🤣 Oh by the way, the wee beastie is a Leptura Quadrifasciata or Longhorn Beetle I believe.
always wanted to visit , so thanku for sharing ur visits, btw didnt see a print of the thistle in ur Etsy store.....i also enjoy ur other videos channel on moving to Skye....looking forward to more from ur channels!
Thanks Melinda! I’m so glad you liked the video 😊 The thistle is one of my most popular prints - but I do have one left in stock on Etsy. I’m working on getting a new printer sorted now that we have moved & will hopefully be re-stocking everything in January! Sarah x
Really enjoying your channel. But ya know, the fact that there are those who want to develop the area right next to this historic and almost sacrosanct land is a travesty and an underappreciation of history. And out of curiosity, do you ever sell your original artwork? I'd almost give my right arm for that thistle...
I know - it’s crazy that development has been allowed so close to this historic site and continues to be debated 🤯 I haven’t yet sold any of my original paintings - I’m waiting to have a chance to exhibit them which will hopefully happen this year. Maybe after that I will think about selling them (if I can bear to part with them!)
@@shewalksshepaints I hear ya on having a hard time with parting with original pieces; I feel the same with my quilts!! They are my babies! Looking forward to your etsy shop opening again soon; was hoping to bag that thistle print!
I was fortunate enough to visit Gettysburg battlefield and Andersonville prison from our Civil war. But history is how we learn. There is a square here in Savannah, Ga that honors the Highlanders and Scottish troops that came to our city to help pry it from the English landholders. So our history is connected! In the middle of our state, is are several state parks that protects Native American settlements. There are Ocmulgee, Etowah, Kolomoki Mounds. Forgive my long post. But I love history and ancient peoples. I noticed the new music! It fits beautifully for your channel. I am always enthralled to watch you paint. So pretty. Thank you for taking us along.
Thank you Mary! There so much sad history around the world, but it’s definitely important to remember those events in a respectful way and hopefully we can learn something from them.
