Do you believe that what you see influences how you feel? Actually, the opposite is true: What you feel - your "affect" - influences what you see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. Psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett shares the groundbreaking discovery that you experience the world through affect-colored glasses. She also reveals how affect can be a source of wisdom that helps you to make better, wiser choices. Learn more at www.tedxcambridge.com Lisa Feldman Barrett is a University Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University, with positions in psychiatry and radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She has published over 200 peer-reviewed research papers in top journals on emotion, psychology, and neuroscience. Her research teams span the globe, studying people in the West, the East, and remote parts of Africa. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This talk is very informative. Early Buddhist meditation takes affect very seriously by making the connection between affect and sensation explicit with respect to consciousness as pleasant or unpleasant. Hearing about this relationship in terms of a body budget gives me something to reflect on when it comes to abiding calm and clear comprehension.

"Thoughts become perception, perception becomes reality. Alter your thoughts, alter your reality." William James Think about it. Some people feel threatened when they're not threatened at all, why is this? Something occuring or what they're thinking is reminding them about a past experience that had a negative outcome. They are now thinking the present situation will have the same outcome so they feel threatened, most often you fear nothing but your own thoughts, and your feelings influence your thoughts as well as your thoughts influencing your feelings. Feelings are conscious choices. When living in the moment the past and present don't interfere and you see things as what they actually are, when not thinking you are not believing your fixated perceptions.

Very interesting speech, I have never looked at moods in the sense of body regulation. I’m curious if this applies to people with mood disorders as well. Also, if you apply our deep belief about “the truth” to our negative thoughts (i am not safe) it quickly becomes (the world is not safe.) Love the idea of challenging certainty with curiosity in this aspect. Questing if perhaps the world is safe and my affect is distorting my view.

Was Nadella of Microsoft is in the audience? at 17:00 , his expression for "obviously foolishness" term usage is so good... Very informative. I feel (!) the main challenge in adoption is with the clock cycle difference between the System1 and System2. If Affect uses System1 and awareness uses System2 it is cognitively inefficient to use System2 for all our choices. Deliberate practice would take several repeations to unlearn and replace the prior affect reactions. Any easy way out?

This “discovery” of mood as co-constitutive of experience is announced by Heidegger in 1927 in chapt 5 of “Being and Time” as “befindluchkeit” Only he did not fall into materialist reductionism of attributing creative agency to the aspect of anatomy we call “brain.” Smart lady with little forehead, no crown, and little heart. Some good info, however.... By what your saying Ms Barret, it sounds as if you're "affect" is: There is no such thing as truth. 2+2 will always equal 4---Never will it be anything you "think" it should be. It's the exact reason you trust the plane you're getting in, ready to fly over the Atlantic or anywhere else for that matter. That plane is built on precise mathematical facts. We try our best to control for nervousness. She may have had coffee or or other dehydrating foods before her talk and then when it came time to talk her body went into nervous mode. "A dry mouth can occur when the salivary glands in your mouth don't produce enough saliva. This is often the result of dehydration, which means you don't have enough fluid in your body to produce the saliva you need. It's also common for your mouth to become dry if you're feeling anxious or nervous." If people take flax seed oil or MCT oil before speaking, it helps.
