Cultural Christianity kills. Taking Blake's Christianity seriously. William on Jesus

At one level, Blake is clearly Christian. It’s even trivial to say so. And yet, his identification with Jesus is often sidelined, even written out, of accounts of the poet's work today.
There are many reasons for this neglect: an understandable disillusionment with Christianity; the replacement of participative Christianity with cultural Christianity and its stress on moral law; the rise of atheism in the 19th century; the colonisation of literary studies with secular assumptions.
But Blake is quite clear: without the divine vision, focused on Jesus the imagination and the centrality of the continual incarnation, the golden string he offers us today, will not lead to heaven's gate.
So what type of Christianity does he champion? How does he communicated it? And why is it still so needed, 200 years on.
This talk was given to the Blake Society.

Why "Cultural Christianity kills"? There's nothing inconsistent with metaphorical and mythical usages, and there's nothing harmful in that, if so. I never heard of anyone killing someone else over metaphors, only doctrines taken literally.

Thanks for this. Blake is a mystic and remarkably visual in his thinking and imagination whilst for the vast majority of us, Christianity is just a set of rules that if followed lead to a happier life in this world and comfort in adversity. Additionally Christianity creates a civil society in which the mystic and the leading of a productive rewarding life can flourish. So the Christianity as a religion works for all of us. Blake seems full of awe and even excitement as he creates art by drawing or writing what he 'sees'. He sees the outer world as the dance of the Divine rather than 'reality'. The Bible helps him make sense of what he already ‘sees’. His naked wonder is itself wondrous as we can have no doubt that he is sincere and thoughtful. He'd have a absolutely no need of psychedelics!

Icons as windows of eternity. IMHO regarding a painting as a window is a western concept of a painting developed since the Renaissance with the reintroduction of perspective. Icons use a "reverse perspective" and give the impression of the painting projecting into our space, and as such the eternal is projected into the world.

The reformers were the ones who brought back to peoples conciousness the centrality of the mystical union with God. It was very prevalent in their theology, and protestant mystical writings inspired an interest among the Orthodox at the time, and were widely circulated in Russia, and had a lot to do with why this is so central in Orthodoxy today.

I'm epistemologically agnostic, but leaning towards metaphysical atheism. I was only ever exposed to evangelical Christianity, which I found off-putting -- the concept of eternal damnation will do that. I wonder what Blake made of the idea of a literal hell?
@ALavin-en1kr
@ALavin-en1kr Месяц назад
I agree with you on evangelical Christianity, it has not evolved from dark age concepts yet, when people were scared into behaving. I take Christianity as having to do with consciousness; Christ consciousness. We have human consciousness; awareness of being conscious beings with awareness of our immediate environment. Christ consciousness I take to mean being aware of the whole what is happening within and without in our immediate as well as a a distance. Cosmic Consciousness would mean Cosmic awareness. There is a lot on biological evolution but as consciousness is still ‘the hard problem’ little is known about it, or about mind; is mind elemental emerging with quantum events? We are moving away from a material age into an atomic age when inner forces; electricities; electromagnetism; magnetism, and eventually mind and consciousness will be better, if not fully, understood. Some of that understanding may not come until an age beyond the one on the horizon. That some may be already there is likely, not all evolve at the same time, or at the same pace.

So you basically saying you don’t believe a God could exists or if there is a God we could not know it, and that you are leaning toward a belief that there is no supernatural or divine reality of any kind. But you are interested in eternal damnation… otherwise you would not ask Blakes view on hell, if he has any. Read William Blake, "The Proverbs of Hell"
@lazaruscomeforth7646
@lazaruscomeforth7646 Месяц назад
Eternal hell has nothing to do with time. It is simply the state of mind of someone who embraces self over others, law over mercy, justice over grace. At death the person is simply what they are essentially in life, darkness and death and misery. Rejecting the eternal embracing light leaves one in the eternal lonely darkness.

I wish mystics (Blake included), actually, virtually all thinkers, spoke more sensitively and coherently about the self and "self-annihilation" etc. We really need better language here. Self-expansion is qualitatively different from self-eradication, and any metaphor of death applied to the self should, in my opinion, be heavily heavily qualified or avoided completely. Clearly, a human being without a very robust sense of self is a pathological being, and to say that there is some form of identity between the discrete self and God also needs to be heavily heavily qualified, otherwise it could quickly lead to some schizoid escapism. It puzzles me that usually articulate people become strangely inarticulate and undelicate when it comes to this issue. Also, I find a lot of Blakeans completely ignore the primacy of Milton amongst Blake's influences. I'm not sure how Blake can even begin to be grasped without a good grasp of Milton, especially Paradise Lost. Milton's monism is quite unlike your run-of-the-mill mystical non-dualism, and as far as I understand, Blake thought of himself as Milton's successor. In my opinion, Milton actually performed what Romantics like Blake sought to do. For Milton, (His) imagination was indistinguishible from Divine Knowledge. Milton is still the greatest poet, and if we are reviving Blake, we must also revive Milton. Wordsworth called out for Milton, we should do the same.
@Xeper616
@Xeper616 29 дней назад
I'm not sure why there needs to be sensitivity with the language used for the mystical experience. The metaphor of death is often used because the mundane identity is something which is utterly transcended in these moments of ecstasy, it is a powerful and apt way to get that point across.

And so, I often find these kinds of talks, although interesting, illuminate no path, no direction. All very well, but then what. It may leave us feeling something is stirring within, but what? As Jung said, people will do anything other than look within. The inwatd journey takes us down before the assent, a fearful proposition for many. It's interesting that the interest in Jung has grown since Covid, where many were forced into self refection. In short listening to elevating discussions wont take you down. And the journey always begins with a fall.❤
