Each of the 400 different Aboriginal cultures in Australia has a distinct mythology, ceremonies, and art forms, some of which have a strong astronomical component. Many share common traditions such as the “emu in the sky” constellation of dark clouds, and stories about the Sun, Moon, Orion, and the Pleiades. Several use the rising and setting of particular stars to indicate the time to harvest a food source, and some link the Sun and Moon to tides, and even explain eclipses as a conjunction of the Sun and Moon.
These traditions reveal a depth and complexity of Aboriginal cultures which are not widely appreciated by outsiders. This presentation will explore the wonderful mystical Aboriginal astronomical stories and traditions, and the way in which these are used for practical applications such as navigation and harvesting. It also describes the journey of exploration which is opening Western eyes to this treasury of ancient Aboriginal knowledge.
Ray Norris is a British/Australian astronomer with CSIRO Astronomy & Space Science who researches how galaxies formed after the Big Bang. He also researches the astronomy of Australian Aboriginal peoples, for which he is an Adjunct Professor in Indigenous Studies at Macquarie University. He was educated at Cambridge University, UK, and moved to Australia in 1983 to join CSIRO. He currently leads an international project to image the faintest radio galaxies in the Universe, using the new ASKAP radiotelescope being built in Western Australia. He frequently appears on radio and TV, performs in a stage show called “The First Astronomers?”, and has recently published a novel, Graven Images.

I grew up in Florida, and as a child I also thought of the belt and sword of Orion as a saucepan. But then, I was rather imaginative, and I thought the Pleiades were spooky, because there seemed to be something there that would disappear whenever I looked directly at it.

The tale about children counting beyond the numbers four and five is interesting. In the civilized world the most common system of counting is decimal based. There are others like binary, hexadecimal etc. What Mr Norris has not told us is what the system of counting the indigenous people used bearing in mind there were/are 400 different cultures. If they didn't have a system of counting and can count to millions or more then Rain Man would have nothing on them...the indigenous people would have to be blessed with absolutely brilliant brains.

Similarities in Chinese folklore about death&reborn, algae replaced by a bowl of soup to foret-everything in previous lives. An old lady would serve it before the person crosses the river. BTW, algae is delicious. 😄

7 Sisters are the 7 original deities of humanity. They are two sets of 3, and the Whole. The two sets of 3 are Consciousness and Matter in 3 aspects each: Creation Sustainment and Destruction. For instance: Shiva and Shakti are Consciousness and Matter. They both have aspects of Creation Sustainment and Destruction ... Brahma Vishnu and Rudra, Lakshmi Saraswati and Kali. These aspects exist in all the Old Traditions. Together they are the 7th - Great Mother. She's all we recognized in the Paleolithic ... No gods. That's why they are all female - Sisters.

Nice work ... but the emu. there is like 4 stages of it in the sky when you see her behind that' means she chasing her mate mating season and a month or two later the position of the emu is sitting down that's the male looking after them then he's in the walking position meaning he teaching the young emus .then upside down you have

Indeed, like I said in my own comment: guy is all over and really did not get all the information...Dr. Duane Hamacher is *way* more knowledgeable and works with Aboriginal Astronomy students. ______________________________________________________________

This guy is all over the place and leaving out important *AND* pertinent information. Making the whole concept of Aboriginal knowledge feel superfluous when it actually has multiple levels of increasingly complex knowledge with the stories, songs lines, constellations, stars, animal and plant kingdoms being *ALL* connected in the transmission and passing down of such information. A better presenter and person that has a depth of knowledge is Dr Duane Hamacher from the Monash Indigenous Studies Centre. *FYI* - People would be interested in the movement of the sun - as well as the Moon - for agricultural and weather (especially Monsoon season) purposes. Are you serious or has your degree dulled your common sense? ________________________________________________________
