Olga Popok right?! However what I have tried is not good. Admittedly I am kind of a ‘sushi snob’ and by that I mean I like good sushi )) and it’s hard for me to understand restaurants that are ‘Sushi and ‘something else’’. It took me 9 months to get over my fear to try some here. Sadly I am going back to not eating sushi here until someone gives me a good recommendation and knows what they’re talking about. And actual sashimi not just rolls.

The dipping yourself in cold water in winter is not done only to wash away your sins - we think it's very healthy (and there is some research to support it). But it's funny to me, because other than dipping yourself in literal zero degree water when it is -20 outside, being cold (drinking cold beverages, turning on AC too high, etc.) is thought to cause illness and maybe even death, according to many an old lady. As for the PDA... we don't like it either, trust me. I think it's a little bit less in the west of Ukraine, but yeah it's not good all around. Also, in the west of Ukraine, it is common to be "Greek Catholic" - essentially the same as Orthodox, but recognize the Pope. Anyway, in these churches, you don't have to cover your hair or wear a long skirt! There are some priests or babushkas that'll chastise you for it, but you don't have to listen to them, as you really are not required to do that. Anyway, really cool video, hope you're doing well :)

Karina M. As a Ukrainian you should speak out against the racism in your country, and advocate for anti-discrimination laws and equality in society, to try and make the experiences of ethnic minorities more peaceful in your country. Because right now I see A LOT of racism, white-supremacy, anti-Muslim bigotry, homophobia etc, in your country.

I love sushi! Hahaha :) But to be honest, I didn't notice that much sushi in Ukraine. Must be because I have been used to :D I am now studying abroad and one of my classmates is Nigerian and her accent is very similar to yours, very cute! Thank you for the video. It is very interesting to see the foreign point of view. And I hope our country becomes a better place for foreign students.

Jordana or Iordana (крещение) - it is not so cold as it looks. There are some preparations before and after going into water that really helps. In Kharkiv when you fasten the seat belt in taxi cab - mean that you think that the taxi driver is bad driver and you do not trust his skills. It is kind insult for taxi driver. But such thought is not commonly spread between taxi drivers. Also what holidays at the half of the year you were talking about? Maybe you were talking about holidays at april-may period?
@tianahsdiary8416
@tianahsdiary8416 7 лет назад
Hahahaahaa!! I ddin't know that. wow!! I can't trust myself when riding a bicycle now more of tai drivers. The rate at which accidents happen and what i see at the ICU in the hospital wouldn't make me trust myself not more of strangers. Yeah! I was talking about feb-May period. Thanks for your support!
@tianahsdiary8416

Also the Jordana celebration, i don't think i can participatein it just because of the cold. On a regular day in winter, i have to mentally prepare myself to step out for my lectures. It's fascinating to watch tho. I promised my friends to accompany them next year but just to watch.

Nice video, thanks for sharing. I am Ukrainian and can tell you that men who don't work is NOT OK . In most families 2 parents are working because 1 salary in not enough money and they are both educated (in most cases, especially in the city). But house shores are very unfair because woman has to come home from work and cook, clean the house, and help kids with home work. kids bring home a LOT of homework .Anyways you are very adventurous for coming to study in Ukraine :)) Are you planning on going back home when you are done with your studies ??

All of the former USSR soviet union countries (I.e. Russia. Ukraine, Kazakhstan,...etc..) use the father's forename as the child's middle name (masculine form for boys and feminine form for women) and then pass their last name down. Most of the former soviet union countries have beautiful church architecture because of the Orthodox Christianity in their culture.

No it does not work like that. The priest yes he blesses the water it is to wash oneself and cleanse the out most inner being. But this does not give license for someone to sin and to keep doing it. They must truely repent and wish to not do it again (even if they fail later) but they did not planned it as long as they truely truely repent and wamt to start a new life they will. Now that is not the reason why they enter in water. When they enter it is a blessing here is more information: www.pravmir.com/the-great-blessing-of-waters-from-sea-to-sea/ It is the blessing of the water (Holy water) It is unique in their culture. This is usually for a conversion process of the whole person. As for the signing of the cross, it is three times before a church and in certain parts of the ceremony it is three times each it is since apostolic tradition, to do it as a sign of repect to God. In roman rite of the catholic church in our countries countries we do it only once each time we pass in a church. Reason orthodox do it three times even catholics from the byzantine do this it is because of the Holy Trinity.

I am Ukrainian. Let me comment a bit. Such an a pious behaviour of crusifix displaying became notable after Independence declraration. Before it was absent. It is a very rural habit. But is my personal opinion. Yes I prefer to buy the home foods directly in streets than in malls because it is more natural and much cheaper. Never got poisoned by it. I think EU intrudes so much with its its E-chemicals and its excessive food pocessing.

Thank you for your video. If you've been living in Ukraine for probably more than 5 years. You must like it there! I have a question? I'm a Black American man from New York! I want to start traveling again! I want to visit eastern Europe (Ukraine, Romania, the Czech Republic and Hungary) but I hear Ukraine is extremely racist. Like on the same level as Russia! I don't know as I've never visited eastern Europe. Can you please give advice on traveling to Ukraine as a Black person? I'll even take advice from other people as well!
@ishaqahmed3414
@ishaqahmed3414 5 лет назад
hey man see I've seen your comment, am a student in Ukraine too, I've had the same feeling before I came to the place, so I would advice you to visit the place, as a black man, I've never experienced any sort of racial segregation, you have to understand that in this part of the world , it's not in their nature just to smile or speak without a reason, it's just not part of them, but what I've seen is that a lot of people are welcoming in the eastern side of the country.

many of the cultural shocks come from the orthodox traditions, for me as someone from a country with many catholics most of those come as no surprise. Also did you ever wonder why you think of a decorated tree (when there is no snow in Nigeria) as a Christmas symbol? But I was really surprised about the taxi drivers getting offended when you fasten your seat belt, lol seriously?. Also is it common to be at the front passenger seat? Here you are supposed to be on the back seat, it's more safe anyways. The people selling stuff on the streets is probably because of the bad economy, I mean, If you are a farmer you probably will sell your stuff to the distributor who will sell it to the market sellers, who will sell it to the public. So the farmer gets 1/10 of what what people pays (sometimes even less). By selling it directly on the street you cut the middle men and get paid more fairly.
@tianahsdiary8416
@tianahsdiary8416 7 лет назад
LOL! Most people don't use christmas trees in Nigeria, and if at all they do then it will be the plastic ones. lol!! For me Christmas in Nigeria is more about the food and ambience than any other thing. Selling by the road side is of no surprise to me. Have you been to Nigeria? Then you'll understand the statement above. They more organize about it over here. plus it helps my lazy self from walking too far sometimes.
