The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is a widely acclaimed scenic railroad that draws tourists from all over the world to witness the beauty of the San Juan Mountains. Founded in 1967 as a joint effort of preservation between the states of Colorado and New Mexico, along with many volunteers, the 64 mile-long section of the Denver, Rio Grande & Western Railroad’s San Juan Extension continues to entertain with one way day-long trips through the vast mountains over Cumbres Pass and along the jaw dropping cliffs of the Toltec Gorge. Autumn is one of the best times to visit the Cumbres & Toltec, with the beautifully vibrant gold leaves of the aspen trees shimmering as they make their quick change. Often trains will be sold out, even during the week, just for people to witness the breathtaking beauty of the San Juans’ golden transition. This video features scenes both trackside and onboard scenes riding the entire line between the steep climb out of Chama, New Mexico, and the arid hills of Antonito, Colorado. Ex-D&RGW Baldwin-built K36 Class 2-8-2 “Mikado” type locomotives #484, #488, and #489 are featured in this video, along with Baldwin-built K27 Class 2-8-2 #463 making a rare appearance on the Chama side of the line. Now, please enjoy this exciting full length feature brought to you by Blue Comet Productions!
This video was filmed on October 1st, 2nd, 8th, 9th, and 10th, 2022.

As a hard core narrow gauge enthusiast, I must say this is by far your best video yet! Plenty of K-36 class mikaydoes and even a coal tipple as well! This one is Nanners approved!

This is one of the best videos of the Cumbres and Toltec that I've ever seen, the scenery, locations, the engines, a masterpiece of a video I must say. Also, has the railroad decided which K-37 they're going to restore yet, or is that unknown as of this time?

492 in the beginning of the video was the one chosen. While there filming it was yet to be known, only afterwards was the engine chosen. Figured it would be a nice little Easter egg for the future to include it.

Even though engine 489 is my favorite engine on the Cumbres and Toltec, I was shocked to realize that it became an oil burner, even before this locomotive became an oil burner it’s been my favorite.

Great, which ride is better to hear the hard work uphill of the locomotive? From Chama to direction Antonito or from Antonito to direction Chama?

I wonder in the future that the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad will bring in some diesels from the white pass and Yukon railroad like General Electric class 90 diesels?

488 is in the video, it was the engine featured in a few scenes trackside as well as the ride to Osier. 487 was down for repairs and now eventual oil conversion.

Not all of them are. Either way, rather see them converted to oil than not run at all.
@michaelramsey82

What's the difference? It's still steam. Coal is a finite resource - it would happen sooner or later anyway, and this way, they get to continue running rather than being permanently retired for lack of fuel.
@HinckleyBranchRailfan
@HinckleyBranchRailfan Год назад
@zebrashark23 ,you really need to stop! Did you even know that Oil Burning Locomotives have actually existed for around 100 years now? They aren’t exactly a new invention to ruin Steam! You’ve been commenting on many new videos since last year with 489 just cause it’s been converted to oil, it’s getting really over the top.
@SimplyTakuma
@SimplyTakuma 7 месяцев назад
Its not bad to convert to oil burners. And they can building it back when the oil conversion dosen't do the job or have problems in the future.
@zebrashark23
@zebrashark23 7 месяцев назад
@@michaelramsey82 Coal is NOT a "finite" resource. There is enough coal in the black hills alone to power the entire country for decades.
