One of the later first cut crops I’ve come across on my travels this year. A Commemorative edition Case International 1594 rowing up with a Claas Liner 660 rake followed by an almost new MF 5713S NEXT edition, and it’s first season powering a hybrid MF 630/ Pottinger Mex VI trailed forager. John Deere 2650 and Case 1494 on trailer duties and a growling Case Maxxum 5130 (a new arrival to the farm just a few days before hand) with a great old-school bark from its 6-cylinder Cummins engine as it fills the clamp. Filmed in Cumbria July 2021 and all safely gathered before the heavy rain showers arrived!

It's so nice to see vintage 80s tractors working the field and the pit. My favourite tractor that I first drove was a 70s Ford 3000 and I absolutely loved it.

Hi David. This local fleet to me was possibly my favourite visit in 2021 (hopefully I’ll be back this year). Love how the smaller farms make do with what they’ve got and in my opinion the older machines do just as good a job as the newer tackle and are much more interesting to watch. Your first drive is very similar to mine, in my case it was a 1972 Ford 2000. Thanks for watching, your comment and subscribing. Very much appreciated, cheers Dave.

Hi Mike. I’ve literally just got back an hour ago from filming the same fleet of tractors cutting silage on a lovely sunny day up here in Cumbria. All still going strong except for the 1594 that has been sold. They’re great old International classics Mike, I still know of a 474 that has been with it’s original owner since new. Have you still got any or are they long gone? Thanks for watching and your great comment, very much appreciated. Cheers, Dave.

Yes the Case (the 1494 I take it) is a great tractor that has been on the farm for years. No need for anything larger than 80-90hp with 8-ton trailers and a 100hp 6-cylinder perfect size for buckraking a traditional sized pit. Thanks for watching, your comment and for subscribing (it just popped up). Very much appreciated. Cheers, Dave

Fantastic video. Great to see the old iron still doing the business. And that 5130 is a beast on the pit. She's a real beauty. Don't make them like that anymore.

They certainly don’t make them like that anymore Kieran! Even though the 5130 was only 100hp, it certainly sounded a lot more with that lovely bark from its Cummins engine. This was probably one of my favourite fleets of 2021 and hopefully I’ll see it working again this forthcoming summer. Thanks so much for watching and your great comment. Cheers Dave.

Another cracking video David. Really nice to see so many classics at work once again. I love that they’re still buying tractors like that 5130. It’s another ‘classic’ that is slowly disappearing, so cool to see it on duals too as it roars up the pit!

Many thanks Jacob. It’s always great to see the classics working out in the fields of Cumbria. As you rightly say, the 5130 is one of those tractors that is slowly disappearing and yes it’s great seeing it on dual wheels (again not so common now) with that engine bark as it opens the throttle!

@davidwinthrop7077
@davidwinthrop7077 Год назад
Hi Flying Fergie. The foragers is most definitely an MF630, I looked at the manufacture plate when I was up there this year and the stamp confirms that. The farm used to run an MF 610 before this one when there was a tractor with less hp to drive it. Great to hear you also own a 630, they’re few and far between but are a great machine and no I don’t think I’ve seen another on youtube either? Really pleased you enjoyed watching the video and thanks for the great comment. Always appreciated, Cheers David.

@@davidwinthrop7077 Its great to see another 630 in action, these were made by Pottinger and are basically a Mex 6 in massey colours. There are many Mex 6's on RU-vid but as we said not many 630's that I am aware of. I plan to get my 630 out in summer and film it with all classic masseys cutting, lifting carting and on the buckrake. Just need to get the time.
@davidwinthrop7077
@davidwinthrop7077 Год назад
@@FlyingFergyMan Now that I would like to see! Are you far away from Cumbria? You’re certainly correct in saying that there’s plenty of Pottinger Mex 6 foragers still working but very few Massey 630 models which are the same machine but in MF livery. I filmed the same setup this season working in different fields, just haven’t got round to posting it yet, hopefully you’ll enjoy watching it when I do. . The owner was saying due to time and labour issues he might call the contractors in next season which would be a pity so I’m pleased I managed to once again catch one of these rare machines still working in the countryside.
@FlyingFergyMan

David we are in County Antrim NI, we run a small farm on the Antrim Coast, I would indeed love to see this latest 630 video when you get a chance to load it. I have subbed you so I hopefully get a notification when you get around it. Time and labour are always an issue with this type of silage making. However with the significant rise in costs and from what I have seen in our area it seems farmers (if they have the help) are dusting down their old harvesters and getting them going again to try and keep costs down.
@davidwinthrop7077
@davidwinthrop7077 Год назад
@@FlyingFergyMan I’ve just googled County Antrim, looks a beautiful area, a part of the world I’ve always wanted to visit. Thanks so much for the sub, greatly appreciated and as soon as I get the video edited (there’s a lot of footage) I’ll be uploading it (about 3 weeks I would think) and you should get notified. Yes I think the trailed forager is slowly making a comeback, as you say it can be a labour intensive operation but with the rising costs of fuel and no doubt contractor bills running a trailed chopper and supporting team could prove cost effective and as proven in the video you don’t need masses of hp, the 130hp Massey 5713 here proves that. Really enjoyed your comments, greatly appreciated. Regards, David.

Nice - I pushed up a lot of silage with a ford 5000 with no power steering back in the 80s - The high reverse was too fast, the low too slow - Guess which one the teenaged me chose?

Ha I wonder Sean 🤣 You mention no power steering but like the Massey 165 I buckraked with back in my teens, did you find the front end went very light anyways when with a full load of grass you raised the linkage and found you definitely had 2-wheel drive! Cheers, David.

Morning Fred. Is it the 5130 you’re enquiring about or one of the 94 series? I know the white 1494 is getting on in years and has clocked a fair amount of hours and does smoke a bit under throttle. Regards, David

Yeh agree completely Gavin. The MF had 130hp and it cleared 70 acres in a couple of days so not bad going at all. The white 1494 and 1594 on the rake have been on the farm a lot of years and the 5130 just a recent arrival. They also have a 1394 and DB 990 so apart from the MF are all classics. Thanks for taking the time to watch and posting your comment. Much appreciated, Dave

How did the massey get on with the mex vi she didn't seem to be struggling anyways
@davidwinthrop7077
@davidwinthrop7077 3 года назад
Hi Kevin. The 5713 got on really well with the Mex VI even though the Massey was barely run having less than 300 hours on the clock since its purchase just a few months ago. Was a late first cut taken off 60 acres, it was dry but judging by the amount of grass in the pit it was a good bulky crop

Hi Marc. I’m no expert on Cummins engines and without any other Maxxums in the area (very thin on the ground) to compare it with I can’t really comment on it’s sound. I do know however that it’s been very reliable and has never let the owner down whatever task he’s given the 5130 to do. Thanks for watching and your comment, appreciated as always. Cheers, David.

Put trailer the other side errrrrr
@davidwinthrop7077
@davidwinthrop7077 2 года назад
I know what you mean as mostly I see the trailer been filled on the right hand side but it’s the operators choice to fill to either side whatever’s more comfortable for him. Last few days I’ve seen trailers being filled to the left, right and even rear loaded so obviously everyone has their own personal preference. Thanks for watching and your comment, much appreciated. Cheers Dave.
@daneenmurf1043
@daneenmurf1043 Год назад
In Ireland we always put the trailer on the left. Its been that way since doublechop days, so the trailer didnt spend all day driving on the sward. To be honest it makes no difference which side you fill with a selfpropelled but older trailers have one side higher than the other and we should change them around. Even more difficult we should change the habits of a lifetime !
