Cumbrian Silage 2024. Raking, chopping, carting & clamping with NH, JD & Claas 75 drag chopper.

Following on from last weeks NH mowing video the next day saw the same dairy farm team lifting the end riggs to open up the main field.
Using all their own machinery as they have done for many years and with some additional help on carting duties, it was all hands on deck for the next couple of days.
A New Holland T5050 and Krone Swadro rake were rowing up ahead of a NH T7.210 and trailed Claas Jaguar 75 forage harvester. This machine has been on the farm since new (so at least 25 years) and was making a grand job of chopping the grass and side filling the trailers.
On trailer duty on the day were an immaculate John Deere 6430 Premium and an equally nice NH T6050 (emitting a bellowing roar accelerating up the farm lonning) both pulling Weeks 10-ton trailers.
(An additional Valtra T202 was helping out carting grass when the lead from field to farm got longer but unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to film it)
At the clamp was a JCB TM320 and although the shed was fairly empty on this visit with such a bulky crop it would have certainly been a lot fuller at the end of the day.
A glorious sunny day out watching this exceptionally clean family owned fleet gathering the silage crop in, my only regret was I couldn’t stop longer!

Cracking video David, the machinary is very well looked after looking a the video, the manon the pit doing a fine job too, shame all new machinary has to make a dam'n noise must be so irritating, cheers Steve . 🚜😎👍

Many thanks Steve. Yes very well maintained machines, even the older ones such as the Claas forager that’s 30 years old at least! Yeh good clamp man though those bleepers can be annoying, wouldn’t want to listen to that all day! Cheers, David.

Good evening David on this hot and pleasant day. What a wonderful video, especially knowing its an in house operation and with the exceptionally well running Claas Jaguar 75 forage harvester, took right me back to my days on the farm where there was no self-propelled choppers. Judging by all the kit you featured, this is one farm that takes looking after its equipment very seriously, which is very pleasing to see and in many cases in today's world, rare! Its one of my gripes about some farmers and one that I will never understand, but they spend colossal amounts of money on equipment, and don't take care of it. (Rant over). Looked a reasonably heavy crop in the swaths, but was being handled no problem by the chopper, just like the JCB TM320 which looked right at home and very stable on the clamp and even with a pretty steep face, was climbing without so much as a grunt. Got to say it looked like a farm and operation, that it would be a pleasure to be part of the team. Thanks as always David. Cheers, Fraser.

And a very good evening to you Fraser. It has been a lovely day, I’ve just been enjoying sitting in our back garden to relax and calm down after the football! (My late dad instilled football into my veins, my mams brother (both also sadly now gone) who ran the family farm instilled tractors! Yes a full in-house operation and your right an exceptionally running trailed forage harvester. I well remember those pre-self-propelled days to when almost every farm had a trailed forager, usually a New Holland 717 Super (or yellow NH 719) or Claas Jaguar 60 in these parts but it’s such much rarer to see one now so it makes it very special when you do so. Oh yes, the equipment is immaculate, the John Deere 6430 is 14-years old but you would think it had just come out of the showroom, as are the NH tractors and even the Ford 555 in the yard must be over 40-years old but looks much younger than its age suggests. (I think you will like the video I’ll be posting next week, some of the equipment is 30-35 years old and so well looked after it looks like new!)As you say in many cases it’s rare and as you point out the cost of machinery is colossal! It was a big crop and the Jaguar 75 never blocked once with the JCB telehandler coping admirably, never struggling to keep up and rolling the clamp well. @@davidwinthrop7077 Well David over our many communications since our first, we both realised how much we have in common, but now we find the first glitch, and that being football. Like your father, my dad and two brothers were football mad (sadly only one brother left now), and as we originated from the Paisley area, they followed St Mirren FC. On one fateful day as a youngster, I was invited to the match, where whilst watching, I seemingly said "what a stupid game this is 22 men chasing a ball", and yes as you can guess, it was my first and last invite, which probably suited me fine as farming was more my thing. 😂. My only golden football moment was as a teenager whilst in the Boys Brigade, I was in the winning 5 a-side football game that won the league. I was in goals (I was a pretty big guy and filled the goal mouth) and the other 4 guys were first class players, but I am happy to take the win and used to remind my dad and brothers that I was the only one in the family to ever win at football....Yehhhh Thanks David and looking forward to the next video. @@frasermathers2287 Well there you go Fraser, we’re not quite peas in a pod as we differ on the so-called beautiful game! I had it drummed into me from about age five (perhaps that’s why I became a drummer, music being my other passion) when my dad along with his friend and my future brother-in-law dragged me and my brother down to Carlisle Utd Brunton Park ground and sat us on the wall so we could see. Can’t remember much about it but the language was choice!🤣 I used to play regularly for my local team (right wing as I was a fast runner) in my teens and early 20s until a motorbike accident put paid to that but although I’m a neutral and don’t support a team but I like a good exciting match which last nights England match certainly wasn’t! Yes next video is edited and ready to post, it’s not all blue skies on this one but the farmer took a chance on the weather and next day it was glorious sunshine! I’m hoping it will be good weather for the next few weeks and someone will give me a phone call to say they are making hay! Fingers crossed 🤞 Thanks again Fraser, hope you have a great weekend. Nice video David, always good to see the trailed harvesters. Did this model shoot to the other side or was this a modified version? Easier on the neck this way!

Many thanks as usual and yes always great to see a trailed forager in the fields. I’m sure it’ll load to either side but don’t quote me on that? Don’t think there’s a right way or wrong way as it’s just down to personal preference but I would think it’s easier off to the pickup side. Cheers, David.

It is a fair bit slower Stewart probably takes a couple of days more but at least the farm can harvest its own silage when the weathers good and not rely on the contractors who might be elsewhere. Very nice kit, well looked after. Cheers, David.
