Nestled away amongst the beautiful fells with the busy A66 running running by, a 5-strong Massey Ferguson team lifts first cut silage on a lovely sunny if slightly windy day. Rowing-up ahead of the forager is a MF 5610 and Lely Hibiscus 745CD rake followed by the farms immaculate MF 6480 and JF FCT1050 forager outfit. On carting duties are a lovely sounding MF 6290 and MF 5455 towing Norton 8-ton trailers plus a now rarely seen corrugated iron sided trailer from the bygone days. At the very narrow and low roofed clamp a MF 390 with its cab necessarily removed for the farms once a year grass harvest fills the pit.
Filmed in Cumbria June 2023.

Thanks H. Oh yeh what a bark those 6290s have, a proper old school 6-cylinder engine note! Yes a really well looked after fleet, was a pleasure to film them. Cheers, David.

Lovely to see a 6290 on a cart proper tractor, pure raw power with a sound track to match, doesn't get much better! 390 still working on the pit was nice to see as well! Another excellent video well done Thanks David

Oh the 6290 was a beast, as you say a proper carting tractor with power to spare, essential on the steeper land! Yeh little 390 an excellent buckraking tractor, handy in the confines of that tight pit with again plenty of power to keep on top of the job. Many thanks once again, your comments and viewings are very much appreciated. Cheers, David.

Many thanks. Yes great to see well looked after machinery, nice to see pride taken in maintaining it as do you with your New Hollands and Reco forager setup. Cheers, David.

Another great video David. Was nice to see a nice family of Massey's working away and that they all looked to be very well kept. Used to hate buck raking from the rear and more than once I would get too greedy and be pushing too hard and forgetting where the end of the clamp was. Had to get pulled out a few times after the tractor was left near tipping over!

Ah, it happens to the best of us! Yes easy to get carried away and see what the tractor is capable of. A lot of pride has been taken in maintaining the Masseys, makes all the difference when your filming andthey’re nice and bright! Cheers, David.

Thanks my friend. Yes everything just seemed to fall into the right place that day although I was worn out by the end of it as was a very steep field they were working in! Was grateful for a lift back to the yard where I’d left my car! Cheers, David.

Great video. That 390 was superb and doing a great job for an 80hp tractor. I assume the front tyres must be filled with water as with loads like that on the back and no front weights, the front wheels should be up in the air.
@davidwinthrop7077
@davidwinthrop7077 Год назад
Thanks Andrew, pleased you enjoyed it. I would think so as you rightly point out it’s lifting some weight of grass on the back end. Lots of traction with those cast back wheels though, great for consolidating the pit! Cheers, David.

Thanks Tim. It was a lovely setup to watch at work and although it was a bit blustery up in the fells was a really nice day out. Wish that wind would blow some of the rain up here In the North, it’s been wet everyday for the last fortnight so not much action in the fields recently!

Great video! Really love drag chopper outfits. All the machinery looks very well cared for. What is the deal with the 390, it must be a very rare one. Looks like a Duncan cabbed, 8 speed with a shuttle?
@davidwinthrop7077
@davidwinthrop7077 Год назад
Many thanks. Yes a really well looked after machinery set up, really nice to film. You’re definitely right about the 390, an early Duncan cab version from about 1991 I think. Definitely an 8-speed shuttle too, certainly the gears are on the transmission tunnel and not to the R/hand side like a 12/12 shuttle. Unusual on the cast rear wheels too but great for rolling the pit! Cheers, David

Brilliant video and very tidy machinery we used to have a 390 with the removable Duncan cab but like an idiot I traded it in for a JD which give nothing but bother🤬
@davidwinthrop7077
@davidwinthrop7077 Год назад
Ha, sometimes like that happens Paul and there’s nowt that we can be done about it. I know a few farmers round here that had Duncan cabbed 390s, sold them and even though they’re still local the new owners won’t sell them back. Thanks Paul, pleased you enjoyed another one, once the weather up here picks up I’ll have some more to post! Cheers, David.

Why cant the tractors and trailers pull along side the harvester to fill up
@davidwinthrop7077
@davidwinthrop7077 11 месяцев назад
Hi Jamie. I think the main reason why they weren’t side loading, and the most probable one was a lack of staff and carting tractors as many farms in the area were harvesting grass that day so everybody was tied up elsewhere. Also a very long lead from field to farm with a very busy road to contend with so they’re was a lot of downtime waiting for their return making it more efficient to rear load. However it could also possibly be that the owner preferred it that way, I know of quite a few (mostly family staffed farms) who also harvest this way. Hope that answers your question!! Cheers, David
