You guys Rock. I love my Jeeps! I am a woman and I love working on old Jeeps. Can't beat a woman gear head, especially one that loves working on Jeeps! A rare find for sure! What a keeper! Hopefully someday I can get one of your t-shirts to support you and advertise too! Keep on Jeepin' on!!!
I got tired of the hassle of getting disabled vehicles in my shop. So I went to my local Harbor freight and got an electric winch and installed it on the back wall of my shop. It even has a wireless remote so I can sit in the car and just steer it straight in...works great and no assistance needed from anybody.
I am a woman and I put a new head on my older Jeep XJ this past winter, outside in the cold, with snow, no garage, all by myself, no help from men or anyone. It's running like a champ now. Love to see women working on older vehicles! You rock! Send me a t-shirt!!! I'd love to blast your Flying Sparks garage logo everywhere! What a story I could tell!
Feel stupid asking but, there isn't a rag in the intake that was intended to keep dirt out and was never removed? Other then that, if it isn't running, its not getting fuel. Try putting a 12v fuel pump in it and eliminating the factory lift pump. If it was an ebay lift pump, they are hit and miss. If that doesn't work, take a look at the return line fuel. See if it is full of air, or if it barely has fuel coming out. You can try pinching it off too. Let me know how you make out
I was thinking they should ask DEBOSS GARAGE, and then I see you just volunteered some good information. (not that I know if it's good or not, I just watch videos! But I do believe Rich knows his stuff!)
HAHAHA I remember a few years ago someone forgot to remove rags from a valley pan on a 440 and tightened down a intake manifold. That car would not run well at all until removed. Not Rich. But it has happened more than once apparently. LOL. Correct me if I am wrong but if you have no air before the pump and no bad seals at the injectors then the only thing left is the pump to let air in right ?
Emily, my dear young lady, Have you ever woke up and not smiled or giggled at anything? I have watched many of your blogs and I am amazed at your joyful spirit no matter what befalls you. I always feel so much happier after watching one of your videos. Also it's nice to see you using some safety gear, I feel better now. I got a kick out of the boat fenders and life preserver protection, that was genius. Have a great day and I cannot wait for the follow up video, hopefully the smoke will clear by then.
cornflake73 It’s rare for me to be in an icky mood but it does happen!! Mostly attributed to my car when it’s broken. 😅 Thanks for the kind comment and continued support!!
Heavy Sigh! You guys are troopers, only thing I could add is check the hand prime pump, seems like a likely spot to suck air if the diaphragm is leaking.
Good swap. I have just converted a Rolls Royce to Cummins 6BT power! It's the ultimate anti establishment car, Matt black paint and a 400 hp turbo diesel roaring through straight pipes. Got another scrap one and it's going to be a 4x4 pickup!
Cool beans guys!!! You should Turbo an old diesel Toyota Land Cruiser jeep!! Word on the street is there’re some of those stashed in an old warehouse down close to you. FJ40 or BJ40 turbo’d would be so fun! Keep up the good wrenchin!
I've known Aron is a diesel guy, but in this video his knowledge really showed. It was awesome watching him work through that system. I don't give a crap that it didn't start. I run into stuff like this in my garage and you'll get it fixed. Don't worry about not getting it running at the end. In reality this could have been 2 or 3 separate videos. We just like going along on the builds/projects. Thanks for the video, it was awesome! (btw) my wife just got glasses and I told her to get some just like yours. (is that creepy?)
Doug Bug Hahaha! The glasses part! 😅😇 Hopefully she was like ‘oh, those are cute!’ in stead of ‘wtf Doug!?’ I’m so glad you enjoyed seeing Aaron is action! He reaaaallybisnt a huge fan of being on camera and talking through what he’s doing but man I feel like he’s doing great overcoming that! I read this comment to him and he appreciated it! Thanks so much!
I’ve worked on cars for 50 years. A few big projects, but mostly small stuff compared to your channel. Very seldom does stuff fall together like some other channels or shows. Love to see the perseverance through the struggles & the troubleshooting.
I know absolutely nuttin’ about Diesel engines so I can’t help out with any suggestions on this one but my one observation is that it’s always the simplest problems that catch us out. The principal of diesels is so straight forward and it looks like you’ve gone through everything but I’m sure the solution will come to you in a blinding flash when you least expect it. Love the show as always, can’t wait for the next. Cheers from Australia 👍
Don't forget about the Fuel Filter!! You could be sucking air in through there! But a one bad injector could allow air to backflow to the other injectors. Don't mess with the injection pump anymore. You've tried 3 and they all act the same. Basically, if the injection pump (the fuel pump is part of the injection pump) is free from air, you don't need to bleed the lines at the injectors. A few extra seconds of cranking will purge the air. Good luck!
Emily, I'd get several pairs of safety glasses in your prescription to keep in your cars, shop and take with you when traveling. That way your eyes are always protected. Another very cool videos you guys, thanks :-D
I have a 2014 Dodge Ram 3500HD single rear tire with the 6.7L Cummins and the Aizin 6 speed auto and I LOVE it. It's my first diesel. I have pulled almost 50,000 lbs with it and it never missed a beat. It wasn't exactly "legal" but it went and stopped just fine. I would love to have a vintage Wagoneer with a 5.9 12 valve and a huge turbo with a 5 or 6 speed manual.
Enjoy and love the video and work you guys do please keep it up can't wait to the next episode of the work on the Jeep if you can make the video longer I enjoyed it LOL hurry up please
Love them Jeeps! I'm all about Jeep! I'm working on a brand-new Gladiator right now, at work! And I sure wish they would bring back the Grand wagoneer j body. Here at the Toledo, Ohio Jeep plant. I remember the 8 miles to the gallon 12 on the highway going downhill LOL
That outro ending says it all... lethal!!! Now I see why your calendar is booked!!! If you filmed a day of different outro's, I'd guess you would have vendor's wanting to sponsor this channel and there business... just saying!!! You are blessed in making a camera talk!!! "w.w."
Y’all are so awesome! I’d love to volunteer to come help y’all fab up some work on one of your projects sometime! Making things that aren’t supposed to work, work is my specialty. Keep up the great content!!
When you were pulling out the vacuum booster for the brakes it occurred to me that some people might not be aware of the fact that at one time trucks, as in tractor trailers, had vacuum brakes. Instead of that booster you'll see on cars they had two tanks that looked much like the air tanks you see on trucks. The worked okay except for the fact that if the engine died you had no brakes at all. It's not too often that happens but it did happen to me once when I was less than 1000 feet from a warehouse and a left turn I had to make in order to not crash through the door of the warehouse. I started driving truck for a living in 1964 and about half of the fleet of trucks had vacuum and half air. Some trailers had both but there were times I hooked up to an air trailer with a vacuum tractor which meant I had zero trailer brakes.
Just a thought. With diesel. You can get sluge build up what about degreesing the injector lines to make sure. Thay are clear. And good old soppy water for bubbles might give you a idea. If any air is some where. Good luck hope you work it out. ☺👍👍
Feeding the engine air from the turbo intake side may have helped at higher RPM.?? But a fuel system could be sucking air at a small crack somewhere you wouldn't guess. Also, Aarons face after he said "I put the pressure in, you drain it" ....priceless lol!
Check your banjo bolts for your return line. We had them backwards on ours the bolt size is the same but port size is different. It was doing the same thing as this one
25:42 "It won't be pretty..." -Aaron On the fabrication front you may claim to not do pretty, but in other areas of your life you have that covered! Great build that is going to be one great daily driver when done, good to see you guys back! Cheers from Tokyo
Great videos folks love the wagoneer I have an 86 Toyota factory Turbo pickup that I converted from automatic to 5 speeds couple years ago. I've seen Toyotas with VW TDI motors in them I wouldn't mind doing that to mine. Keep up the good work I very rarely subscribe to channels but I did subscribe to yours
Awww! Thats a cute little turbo! Should be at least a he 351 on there! So it can get some boost! And a little more fuel and it might get outta its own way! Lol!
I found one of these about 10 years ago with 23,000 actual miles on it for $3500. It was a nice Florida car that only needed a grille from hitting a deer.
Hello flying Sparks garage I like your videos you people crack me up you make me laugh I think your videos are very interesting my name is Paul Burns I'm from Pennsylvania
A lesson my father taught me when working on cars.... The most simple thing is usually the problem. Check out the fuel filter and lines to and from it. Fittings may not be seating well or there's a crack. I spent hundreds of dollars in carb swaps on a small block chevy thinking I kept buying bad carbs and it ended up being a brass fuel filter screen. A lousy $0.10 part...in 1974 dollars...prolly about $79.99 today. The old man was always right!
How about a fuel filter change? Let's assume intake is free and clear. That the fuel is fresh and you have constant power to the fuel cut off solenoid (Just making sure there is not some magical electrical problem). That leaves you with the lift pump or some fuel related problem. If you did have a miss...usually it will sounds like crap but still rev up and not die at idle. SO we are back to it may need injectors or a lift pump. So game plan change fuel filter and lift pump! Good Luck! Just remember more problems means you are closer to finding a solution!
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UUwMkWC7Jio.html runs pretty smooth with them old injectors....it looks like?! This is going to keep nagging at me! :D
you probably though of this , but how about feeding the injection pump from a can of diesel suspended above the engine , ruling out the lift pump leaking air ?
Emily! You can’t cook? It’s ok - you know your way around a torque wrench, so I’m sure we can let it go. My wife and I work together well, (flipping houses, not so much mechanical) so it’s fun to watch you guys. I’m always open to ways to get her to smile.
Sure your injectors are deffo good? I have often had it where one will stick open / push compression back the line, which just gets into pump / distributor head and then airs up everything else, will normally run but rough as mad! Can normally find by removing the lines, fill each injector union with fuel and motor it over. Will likely find one of them will shoot it up in the air, thats your culprit, will likely run perfectly on 5 if you leave that one dissconnected!
Just a thought, if what you are saying is a possible problem. Could they not disconnect the fuel lines from the injectors and crank it? I would think that you could put your finger over a injector to feel if indeed there was compression.
Just a note on the way the hotside of the turbo is plumbed. These engine lose a ton of spoolup if you eliminate the twin scroll effect.; I had a similar issue with my 1st Gen running like that, and something on the lift pump side was the issue. I replaced the whole low side with a sump, an electric pump (walbro 392, and a regulator down to 15 psi is a good option), a dual filter kit, and bypassed all the stock stuff, and it's been running fine ever since. I also had where it would cut out badly just because the intake charge pipe wasn't hooked up.
niceeeee, gotta 77 myself, buddie of mine has a 353 detroit diesel and was thinkin about tryin to make a deal with him for it as he is interested in my 54 reo cdt
I had a similar problem on a JCB 3cx, the fuel line had a small hole in it and a other problem i had on a fuel tank was the fuel( Diesel ) had to be sucked up out the tank ,so air was pulled in to the system where the pipe was connected to the tank and several times the lift pump.
HaHaHa, Did you drive yourself here? Glasses look great, you rock 'em. I just started wearing them at age 50. One thing I found with the distance scrip, you probably don't need them around the shop when everything is at arm's length or closer. And you don't bump those new frames on everything. Amateur installing a turbo. . . ANY turbo install is a yes!
love your work guys keep up all the great content look forward to the next episode, maybe some day when my family and I move to Texas I will have a chance too meet you two in person as I am an A.S.E. master auto mechanic as well as a fan of cool rides!
I'm brand new to your channel, so I'm going to say what I'm sure has been said a million times already; Emily, you are an absolute doll! I love a capable, confident woman, so I married one 43 years ago. LOL. Like you, she is my right-hand helper. Maybe I should say left-hand helper since we're both lefties. LOL. I love your glasses, too.
835th like + subscribed Liked the video & the fact that you both seem sooo happy, you even got me to start smiling...lol. Emily, I think those glasses fit you. You look great. Ya, they can take time gettin' comfortable with them on, but you need to protect your eye sight. I didn't & my eye sight suffered from that. I hope you both have a great day & be safe. {lookin' forward to seeing that Jeep running}
Don’t give up Deboss garage in Canada could probably help you as he puts 5.9 in everything keep up the videos very informative and please wear safety glasses Love your channel
Plus 1 for the glasses. However, you'll find them a darned nuisance when working very close or welding - 'least I do. Your niece still helping - seemed very keen last time I looked.
Watch Finnegan's garage you tube episode on modifying his ramp truck to a Cummins 12 valve out of a USAF Dodge Bobtail, very informative on how they built up the engine to produce 700 HP.
Wonder how well the Chinese turbo will hold up on the 12v. Also is it gonna have an aftercooler/intercooler? The factory turbos are probably one of the best for longevity out there, a hy35, hx35, HE351 or HE341 or even a h1c.
No fake endings? Hopefully we can have a happy ending! How awesome to se a beautiful young lady that likes to turn wrenches! That's so attractive! Plus appears to be real! By the way nice wagon! Best to go with a P-pump cummins. 94 to 98.5.
We own 6 gwags and no rust in any. Drive lines were never good. Husband took 1 and put a 502 gm and a 4l80e and rebuilt the tcase. Rebuilt front diff and axle Moser 355 Islip rear Moser 355 posi. Baer brakes on all 4 corners. Magnaflow. This jeep is the way they SHOULDA built it.
No a diesel mechanic but should you have intake from turbo to manifold connected so turbo boost can equalise fuel ratio ?might be too much fuel (pump could be supplying too much pressure and holding injectors open ) which would give you air in return line due to dumping all fuel in cylinders
