Being a diesel mechanic I know exactly what Paul means. Over time doing repairs and how much more time certain things take under the hood on the V8 diesel compared to the simple inline 6. A six pack of injectors on the Cummins that will take 4-6 hrs to do turn into a weekend job on the Duramax. There's no way over hundreds of thousands of miles will that Duramax be as profitable.

If it takes you a entire weekend to replace injectors on a Duramax then you need to find another trade.

I’ve owned all three Ford, Chevy and Ram. They all have their pros and cons but the overwhelming majority of the problems are either maintenance related or emissions related. When the government got involved they all went to crap, I wish we could sue to get rid of their involvement with the production of these vehicles . The government should not have the authority to regulate industries to the point where the vehicles are prone to failure directly from government forced emissions equipment.

Thank you for what you do. I am just a casual diesel truck owner and have owned a 97 Dodge with the 5.9, 03 GMC with duramax, and now a 12 RAM with 6.7 with 175k on it.They were all good trucks that I maintained and towed an RV with regularly. I have considered going back to a duramax for comfort and I like the looks but all your information helps me decide. Keep it up.

I’ll be very biased here, but I drive almost solely fleet stuff. My personal is a 2022 3500 HO. I can’t trust Chevy anymore man, they rust faster, fall apart faster, I really gave my last one the college try and all the things they complained about Rams in the 90s and 2000s is everything I’ll complain about with Chevy for the last 20 years, Chevy died in 2002 for me. Even the interior seat bolts were rusty within a year on my 15. I know I’m a miracle worker here, but I’ve never replaced a Mopar transmission. Only ever been GM. The 2021 f550 I had was a very stout, very tough truck, BUT, it had a bunch of bugs and though they could be worked out maybe, I stuck with a Ram because I like not having to mess with anything. If you want to be showy, get a Chevy, people love them. If you’re going to be fast, no contest get a Ford. If you’re going to do work, Get a Ram. Chevy paint sucked even on the high end models, the new Ford aluminum shows wear very quickly with the base model paints, Ram could use more clear coat but it seems to be a more durable paint and actually shines back up once you wash it off. More quality is put in Ford and Ram, than Chevy, Chevy really needs to get their act together, it’s not even close anymore. And this is putting my money where my mouth is talking now. Chevy put me way upside down on this Ram loan because of how atrocious that decision was when I bought it. But again, putting my money where my mouth is, I bought the Ram with confidence. The bank just beat the shit out of me because I trusted Chevy. One more thing, the 10 speed is what did me in on the 21 f550. It was getting VERY hot. Nearly 300f in the city, and that was towing nothing but the utility bed it had on it.

Cummins: Better fuel economy while towing, fractional amount of moving parts vs competitors, cheaper for labor/parts, more usable torque range for towing, way better exhaust brake saving on brakes, overall engine longevity especially when taken care of. It's a no brainer for folks who are deciding which platform to build a hot shot/business up with out of ford/chev and dodge. Don't get me wrong for a personal "fun" daily driver, haul the camper once in a while ford and chev are great. However for work, leave that to the inline 6.

Fiat garbage that falls apart, water pump engine that’s missing two cylinders and blows through head gaskets and turbos. Fucking junk. Love the big boy Cummins engines but those 6.7 Cummins are cheap ass junk. 6.7 Powerstroke and the 6.6 Duramax engines alone will last twice as long and the ford and GM trucks will too.

There's a reason V8's were never that popular as big truck engines. Harder on fuel, mechanically more complex, torque curve not as handy for truck use. Unless you're talking an old 7.3 or LLY/LBZ Dmax the Cummins is a better idea for serious work and I would not go anywhere near a newer Ford or GM.

Trying not to assume here but it seems like you are going off intuition based on your extensive experience. My train of thought…Parts on “like” components are relatively the same but 2x as many exhaust manifolds, valve covers, more injectors etcetera combined with more labor hours for the added complexity on the duramax make it 3x more. Am I on the right track here?
@pddieselpower
@pddieselpower Год назад
Yes over all. End of the day once you pay for parts and labor. Replacing parts on the duramax takes a lot more time and few extra parts

so you cancel the order on the two new D maxs? All I know both motors have been trouble free, and the motor I would rather do ordinary everyday maintaince is not the Ram L5P way easier and faster to service at least on the 2020s and up air filters have been hard to get without going to the dealership and paying triple
@pddieselpower
@pddieselpower Год назад
Yes. Oil changes are easier on the l5p. But keeping the truck in service. Meaning any work done under the hood is 2-3 times more time to do. Therefore your paying a lot more for labor. I’ll make more videos. Because in one or two videos i just can’t do much. Give a short time. Just doesn’t work. I’ll brake it down to bits. This way I stay focused and true to one topic instead of talking of few things in one video.

When you're running a truck for a living, the grid heater is probably the most UNUSED item on the engine. They run all day long and may idle all night. On a warm start the grid heater is not actuated. So that explains why he will not see failures. The grid heater bolt failures are the guys that start it, run to the store, shut it off, run to the next stop, ect... That guy may actuate the grid heater 4-6 times or more a day. Paul's trucks maybe once a day, maybe.

Any of these trucks are capable of doing one long-haul video none of them other than dodge Cummins are capable of doing it every day for the next five years that’s the difference, the Ford and the Duramax will be out of commission after the first year just talk to anybody who runs these trucks down the road love the sheets that will be honest opinion about their maintenance costs and how many transmissions Dave rebuilt several years ago there was Duramax and power stroke running up and down the highways hot shotting and I watch them disappear in the last two years and every time I see a brand new Duramax or a brand new power stroke I know that guy is going to be out of business in the next six months. If he makes it one year he’ll be lucky and he’ll sell that truck and swear all hot shotting all Ford Chevy owners do they say there’s enough money in the business yeah, the right when you have a end of year $20,000 maintenance bill each year it’s not worth it even if you made 150,000 you can’t justify spending 20 grand here especially when you see all the Cummins parts in the truck lot next to there 18 Wheeler Brothers today

I own an auto repair shop and work on a lot of the big 3 Cummins, Duramax and Powerstroke. I strongly disagree with it being 3x the cost. Both fords and rams have 2 fuel filters to be changed while the Duramax has 1 (that right there is $70-$80 cheaper in parts, they both hold 3-4 quarts more oil then a Duramax, I’ve replaced more Cummins turbos then anything on a Duramax, I see a lot more emissions issues, ball joint failures and blend door issues on dodges and not to mention the brakes on a Duramax will last 3x as long then both fords and dodges. I recommend Duramax diesel trucks all day long to my customers based off the fact that they are the cheapest to maintain. Did you factor transmission replacements, turbo failures and general maintenance when considering they are 3x the cost to maintain? While you may be right (an exhaust manifold replacement Cummins vs Duramax may be more) that’s one part that very rarely fails if ever on a Duramax. I highly doubt you had to actually replace manifolds on an L5P…
@samuelhatch8470

Paul also uses these as Mack trucks. Most ppl that own these diesel trucks are general contractors, lanscapers, or farmers. None of them are running 10hrs a day at full load 5-6 days a week. I can't deal with dodge/fiat ram build quality. I hate gm because gm after about 2007 is dead to me. Frankly if i was doing "hot shot" id run a medium duty truck and be done with it. Bro thank you soo much for this answer. Currently going to court against the manufacturer to label this as a lemon before I go ahead and go with duramax. Here’s how oil works you can go research it and learn this, but I’ll give you the symbol the first number the 15 or the 10 or the five whatever it may be is the weight when the oil is cold the higher number is what the oil will be at once it reaches running temperature so if you were down in the south works warm all the time 1540 is perfect because your start ups are always warm up here in the north west where it gets very cold you want to be running a five weight 40 because that oil, even if it’s synthetic is thicker than honey when it’s 10° outside and you’re slowly wearing out your engine on cold start ups so we run the 540 up here and it wouldn’t matter if you run the 540 down there because as the engine temperature comes up the oil weight changes. The only time you would be risking your vehicle is if you did an absolute cold start up and you hammer the throttle you might break through the film on the five wait but nobody does that on diesel. It’s always wise to have at least a five minute warm-up before you’re actually towing heavy even in the south, but yeah, no worries running either one down there.

The second oil change, the dealer mistakenly put in the 15w40 Rotella T6. Truck did not idle as well and rattled a lot. A month later, I had 5w40 Rotella T-6 put in. Ran smoother and quieter again.

In my opinion General Motors makes a much better product and they have better quality.
