So I'm going to be a massive wimp and ruin 30% of the video by qualifying everything I say. 1) This is satire. 2) That controversial Cuphead video was created by someone who doesn't usually review games--although he has in the past, from what I understand he's usually a journalist. 3) Video game journalists can create great content without playing games at all. 4) Game reviewers *do* need to be skilled enough to understand games in order to speak about them. 5) I'm being a bit of a prick in the video but it's an extreme case of satire for a reason. I think it's alarming that this is even up for debate--whether reviewers should know how to play games. 6) Nothing about this is political for me. 7) I probably won't ever do a video like this again outside of some April Fool's stuff. This took me a day to make. It's low effort. Don't expect more like this (I'm sure you won't want it). Thanks!
Why do you guys think Bethesda is not a good developer? I'm just asking for pure curiosity because 3 of my favorite games are from them and they're amazing for a lot of people too (Skyrim, Dishonored and Prey).
@@lyadh0451 Arkane just made them but Bethesda published them and own the marketing rights for them. That means they're responsible about every non-gameplay stuff and they can do whatever they want with the game. If complaints are only for gameplay, then sure, we can put those games outside of criticism but I heard their business practices are bad too. Maybe they should use Arkane for all of their future games.
I was surprised when I heard him say that the devs made Hollow Knight, then astounded when he called them Team Meat. I legit believed one company made 3 legendary 2D platformers lmao
I was very confused by the whole thing. I was unfamiliar with the original video. When you went into the lore of the coins I was like "WTF is he talking about?" Then I realized this had to be a joke. Kudos sir. You had me for 5 mins...
>MandaloreGaming runs a Flat Earth documentary channel under the pseudonym "Mandy" >J. Anderson has flat earth proof on his desktop 8:07 which he does not share >Mandalore VERY quickly comments on this video with "LMAO don't take this seriously my fellow viewers!" I can't even tell who is lying anymore, and I'm supposed to board a flight tomorrow!
MandaloreGaming I did take this seriously until I saw his comment and wut not. Are reviewers talking bad about cuphead? I don't keep up with really any video game reviewers/company's so can someone fill me in :/
Hello, Mr. Anderson. I worked on Cuphead, and I'd like to discuss some of your points. The jump height was indeed randomised. Good eye catching that. We saw how simple games like Mario were, where you always jumped at the same height, and decided it would be better if our game was more challenging to players than classic platformers. I'm glad to see we succeeded. We actually never considered jumping and shooting as a way to get past the second obstacle. I wish I had've discovered your video sooner, as we'd be able to fix this bug. However, my time in the gaming industry has taught me that if you don't fix a bug early on, you never fix it. Guess that's staying in. The boss fight was actually the most challenging part of the game to program. We initially intended for five pink lights. However, after some discussion (and a bomb threat that thankfully didn't come to pass), we eventually dropped it down to three. The lights were supposed to move automatically, as well, but unfortunately, time restraints made it impossible to implement this feature. I wish I could tell you something about the lore, but unfortunately, I wasn't on the writing team. I think you're right about the easter egg, but who knows what those guys were smoking? As for that "overworld," I think someone might have hacked your copy of the game. I assure you, that was never part of the original game. I think...
I forgot about that bomb threat I made. Can't believe you guys almost put 5 lights. Honestly I know it's been a while but I might just nuke you guys after all.
You know I watch most of your videos without actually "watching" them. I just listen to them while I'm driving or playing a game. So let me tell you how believable this was without seeing the visuals of what was going on on-screen and thinking this game was super revolutionary and strange. Well done, Mr.Anderson, well done.
I love how at multiple times in this I can hear you worked your DAMN hardest to not crack the facade at all. You did a phenomenal job at giving the deadpan delivery but every once in a while I hear you not being able to resist smiling through the line and it just makes it soo much funnier to me lmao. Nicely done.
@@indjev99 Yeah a game journalist got stuck for a couple of minutes at the part where you need to air dash. Created quite a controversy at the time, some people saying that someone so bad shouldn't be reviewing game, other saying that skill is irrelevant to test a game.
Very insightful. I was hesitant to pick up the game myself, but knowing a fellow gamer was able to conquer the tutorial in less than 8 hours gave me the needed confidence to persevere. The sheer audacity the developers at Team Meat have to put such a gauntlet immediately in your path was paralyzing. I know they were going for a Dark-Soulsy/Mario esque vibe, but a little hand holding wouldn't have hurt. The first platform puzzle should slowly lower itself the more attempts are made to clear it, they can't expect everyone to solve it the same way.
I can very easily understand why you'd find the tutorial/game interesting. It is true that the anthropomorphic nature of their character design and it's animation would be a strong reason for you to go through such a challenge. Though, don't get too addicted, I don't think playing this at work would be very safe.
some of the file names on the desktop are hilarious 8:07 "flat earth proof" "centaurs are real," "horse porn," "stable relationships," "Wyverns gone wild," "YOU!!!" "STOP!!!" SNOOPING!!!"
But you're wrong, Cuphead was made by Koji Igarashi himself. You see, like with Castlevanias, you can't get through certain obstacles without certain items. Well, in. Castlevania (and Pokémon, another great game) those are literal items, while in Cuphead you have knowledge of the obstacle and the way to surpass it. This really shows the brilliance of the game design here, so the game deserves at least a 10/10
Wait a minute. Koji Igarashi is commonly known as "IGA". Castlevania has a music track called "Opus 13". 13 letters away from "A" is "N". IGA. IGN. 8.8. Cuphead. It's all linked. *We're still in the dream!*
Joe, even though i appreciate the satire and agree with your point, i'd love to see you tackle this game in a proper way with one of your hour long critiques.
Hooded Man, yes just like hitting the ‘bulls eye’ it is an short and easy task in concept, but who’s knows how long it will take for him to get ‘bulls eye’ on every boss :) In other words getting to the centre of No Mans Sky is like moving a mountain of dirt from one place to another, anyone can do it because it just takes a long time and the will to keep going. Cuphead on the other hand is like trying to hit the bulls eye but the surroundings make it more difficult to hit and change depending on the boss, now it takes skill a bit of knowledge and sometimes luck to finish. Let’s hope luck is on his side ;)
@@sharmansinge3214 He mastered all of the souls games, cuphead isnt that hard if youre somewhat experienced in playing tougher games or just 2d games in general
This was the most marvelous slow-build troll I've ever seen. I started scratching my head at the text revelation, but busted out the full smile when he got to "six hours" on the multi jump.
Thought this was serious I smelled something fishy at "Just imagine a game where you hit jump and your guy doesn't jump" Picked up the scent trail by "Where as I know Mario has at least 2 levels" Lost my shit at "An hour of that time was spent right here at the start"
Acting like a shitty IGN reviewer while also parodying himself is killing me lol "you cannot proceed without doing this" "I want to stop and focus on the shooting here." Idk his fans can see it, it's hard to explain 😅
Just bought the PRIMA guide, apparently you have to jump on the box, then jump again, then dash, but you have to dash, get this, IN THE AIR. How in the he'll i'm I supposed to know that? They should put a mircotransaction button so you can pay to avoid this? Other than that the game is great. You can see how much insperation it pulls from the last of us, Mass Effect, spec ops: the line, Fallout, half life, Metal Gear Solid, GTA, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Halo, Crysis, Red Dead Redemption, Killzone, and Uncharted in that you shoot stuff, and that's a feature worthy of praise on the part of the developer. Ultimately the game is 10 out of 10, would bang.
Really solid video essay once again, Joseph. You really make me think of games in a new way and I'm happy to see there is still such a fresh perspective on ludonarrative dissonance.
Your content and writing/reviewing skills are amazing. There are only few that can deliver the experience through a video and you do it well. Thank you and I love your videos now. Because of you i got Hollow Knight and i spent the entire day playing and i couldn't put my controller down. When i told my self enough is enough, i did launch the game and played once more, seeing how countless hours just flew by. Thanks man.
the Dark Souls of 2D Platformers is called "Salt and Sanctuary". I wish I were kidding. It's on steam. Pick it up for some fun Dark Souls action. In a 2D platformer.
butt hog there was a game reviewer who wasnt able to get past the tutorial and made a "bad review" of the game, even though he didnt get to the meat of the game. Its a meme now
Let me find it, guys.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-848Y1Uu5Htk.html There you go. It was a reviewer who was this bad at the game and then tried to justify it by saying a reviewer doesn't need to be good at a game. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M2MhuW6gSfQ.html this is a commentary on it by Rags. PS: Whoa 150 likes again? This is my new record, I think!
A video has never made me think as much as this one. Jo, I don't think I can look at games the same ever again. Nothing will compare to the hard, rewarding, epic journey that this game has to offer. And to realize that the biggest challenge was within myself? It's a priceless lesson. Thank you.
I'm disappointed in myself that it took until "I didn't need to shave, I was a man now" to look at the title again, and then be like "Oh. That's why this video is bizarre."
I went into this knowing nothing about cuphead and took you completely serious for a while. You just gave me one of the biggest eye-roll moments and heartiest laughing fits that I've had in the past few years. Thanks. ^^
High quality shitpost. Just hope people got the reference because the journalist was literally worst than Joseph Anderson being as awful as he possibly could be. To be fair though Joseph Anderson is like the only person I know who did the last arena on Hollow Knight and yet want the game to be even harder, must had been painful for him to even prevent he was that awful for that long.
Leonardo Da Sidci you couldnt even finish watching this video by the time you posted so you are just another kid trying to get likes by saying a video is good without having an actual fucking idea
I mean its good, not the usual stuff, but certainly not the best. The good part is taking me off guard. This channel is one of, if not the most serious, honest and thorough. Unless you're satirizing as well... i don't know anymore.
I love it... I've been watching your videos ever since you Dark Souls critique and I have to congradulate you on how far you have come. Maybe this video is not the place to say this, maybe the Hollow Knight is, but it needs to be said eitherway.
As an aspiring game journalist, I really think that you should've talked more about the art of Cuphead some more and not just the gameplay. As we all know, videogames are best known for their artistic expression and not their ability to be experienced through interactivity. The attract screen starts off with showing you the 1930s cartoon-style animation seen in trailer footage, but as soon as you hit Start (god it responds SO FAST) the entire game takes on a dark, mysterious tone. The title screen is mute and minimalist, showing an empty cup in a realistic artstyle, going completely against the grain of what it advertised. Proceeding through the menu shows you an old notepad with nary a doodle on it. The bottom reads, "(C) 1930, MDHR, INC., Selection"... What it means still has yet to be uncovered. Then, you actually get to the gameplay, and although the characters are still the same, all that they travel through is what must be a terrifying void for them. No floors, no background - just an empty canvas. Obstacles are merely basic 3D shapes, like rectangular prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and the occasional circle. Yet these 3D shapes are imprinted onto a 2D canvas - so what do the characters themselves see? How do they even see? What is sight like for a 2-dimensional being? Do they understand the third dimension? Perhaps the fact that these geometrical shapes are obstacles is the greatest hint towards unraveling Cuphead's mysteries. The boss fight in particular, I think, is most malicious - it breaks the rest of the game by utilizing a color that has yet to be seen elsewhere in the game, which makes it all the more jarring and memorable. If it weren't for the bait-and-switch trailer promising mindless action gameplay (a truly niche audience, really) then we might never have gotten such a thought-provoking experience. Also, if you could send me Braided Mares, that would be great. Been looking for that one for ages.
Telos If anything I thought he was making fun of people who spend 2 hours playing something like Inside and then 10 hours over the course of a week watching analysis videos and blogs about how super deep and layered the game is.
I am glad you made this because we need as many people as possible affirming that game journalists or anyone speaking on games SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY THEM.
This was the first cup head video I’ve seen and was with him till the end. the second he beat the tutorial the second time and went to the map, shocked the hell out of me.
