How do the quality and speed settings in Cura affect your prints? Get smooth 3D prints by adjusting your Cura slicer settings.
In this 3 part series, I will teach about each Cura setting and show you test prints that show exactly how each setting affects your prints. There's a lot to learn when using a 3D slicer like Cura, so I am breaking down all the main settings that I believe you should pay attention to.
This video is all about the quality and speed settings in Cura. The quality can truly affect the details of your prints. I show you examples of what different quality settings can do to the details on 3D prints and exactly what that looks like. I also show how speed can affect your print quality with example prints that are printed on a slower setting, and what it looks like when you print fast.
I printed all my test prints on my Ender 3 Pro 3D printer. However, by the end of this tutorial series, you will have an understanding of how each setting works and how to adjust them to get the best 3D prints.

Thank you for this! I use Simplify3D mainly but a lot of this applies. I’ve sat in front of my printer and re-printed the same thing close to 20X to test settings and results to get everything dialed in. One thing I still have issues with is overhangs could still be nicer so I will try dropping print speed in half when it gets to overhangs to see if it makes a difference. Great video!!

Hi again. I know it's a ton of work, but you're the best man for the job! Does that sound like a boss trying to convince you to work overtime? Sorry if it sounds like that. Anyway, do you think you could make a series just on all the settings in Cura, and how each one effects the print? I use Prusa slicer right now, but I like the plug in ability of Cura. This video is really a good one, especially how you showed detailed examples of the speed and layer height settings. If you could make an over all guide to Cura, I think it could become the de-facto Cura reference. Tons of people would view it because there's no definitive Cura reference video out there. You have a great way of teaching, so a series like this would be a remarkable. Again, great video, look forward to part two!

Well first of boss I can explain why I was 20 mins late to work today. 😂😂😂 I really want to thank you for the amazingly kind words. I honestly can’t tell you what it means to me. To directly answer your statement. There is so much to Cura. I’ve thought about doing a more advanced series but it’s going to take a ton of time and testing. I never just want to say things without proof. Anyone can talk but can they back it up. That’s why I’m giving examples. I’m gunna cover a lot of the big stuff in the next two videos where a lot of people have issues. So if there are some things you want to know after these let me know. I’ll do my best as always to help. Again, thank you so much for my support of my channel.

That was quite helpful actually, but what are some good super high quality safe print specs for an out of the box neptune 3 plus doing elegoo pla? Dont care about infil ratios to save filament, just nice solid prints that don't need sanding, other than slowing things down. I have no idea what I am doing so I will get into that stuff once i've had some practice and successes. I'm mostly just doing things like kitchen organization and cnc clamps and work tools, so the more solid the better.

When it comes to speed, what you're showing mainly comes to the wall / top layer speed no? I know that those are usually 1/2 of the inputed speed but if they're being overriden (like it seems to be in your SPEED SETTINGS section) then the speed shouldn't do much right?

Ok, so when you're adjusting layer thickness you can check what is the minimal turn of motors in your printer responsible for lifting the head up and down. In my Creality S1 it's 0.04mm therefore you go for multiplication of this. 0.08, 0.12, 0.16 etc.

@xXKisskerXx

your flow to speed is not due to the nozzle, but the heating element. You can print faster, by printing Hotter. The downside is a higher need for part cooling fans, as the hot plastic coming out, will lose shape if it stays hot too long. The amount of material pushed out, does have limits, based on each hot end design - but honestly most people aren't hitting them until they are printing above 220C (for PLA) and still unable to get enough plastic out. Part cooling is just as important as everything else. Especially if you want to print fast and have it look nice at the same time.

@@dannyspencer933 yeah, I have quite a few videos. I’m glad to hear you were able to take some info out of them. So when it comes to dialing in your settings, you will have to tweak it if you change your layer height. that is when I have found. I don’t get my good support settings that I dialed in so I have had to create support settings for the different layer Heights that I use. So if you always use a .1 mm layer height and that is where you’ve dialed in your settings, you should never need to change it again. at least I have not changed my settings since I’ve got it really good and dialed in and it prints good every single time and the supports come off easily. I tried adjusting my print speed and no mater what, the printer keeps printing like as if I never changed the speed. For example, cura default printing speed is at 50 mm and it says that print time is 10 minutes. I change it to 30 mm andits still the same. Things gets more crazy wheni tried setting print speed at 100 mm or 200 mm and the time is still 10 minutes. This is a first for it to hapen to me. My first printer is a Tronxy x5sa and it's crappy. But I'm at least able to print an articulated slug at a 30 mm print speed. My new printer, ender 3 s1 pro, is just butiful and works like a charm, but I can't get the speed right. I do belive that it's the slicer though. I could manually slow down the speed directly on the printer as it's printing, but that defeats the pourpous of setting the speed in cura. Plus i can't realy tell at what percentage matches with 30 mm a second and I can't tell how long the print will take as cura left me with 10 minutes and the printer screen doesn't tell you how long it will take or how much time is left for it to finish. Please help, I realy need to know as speed is everything and I need to eventually print small detailed parts that require slower print speeds.

Just finished a cube, 0.3mm layer hight with 0.4mm nozzle. No issue with layers, could probably push it a tad higher. But, im not sure. Have direct drive, and motor is larger than few other printers i looked at. Only issue i have with the cube model is the corners. Corners kinda bulge, like it goes to far then split second after corner it reposition it self according to dimension. so atm. Currently trying to figure out what is causing this. Suspecting my print speed has been a bit aggressive. But im not sure if this can take all the blame. So many factors that can produve results im getting. But hey, luckily i was aware 3d printing is not yet plug and play or forget. More a hobby, where there is so much to learn to get the most out of your printer.

@@ItsMeaDMaDe It's been out for a while, I was surprised how few there are. I can see why. It's not bad for the money, but the extruder drives are poor and the software is lame. I am changing them over to gear drive in a more creality style extruder drive. Even if the 3 colour doesn't work, it's still 330 x 330 x 420. Keep at it. you are informative.

@@Matt2chee well I wish you luck with it. That’s why I go with creality on my fdm printers. Parts are readily available and there are tons of mod kits for them. Thanks a lot for the kind words. I love learning everything I can and just want to spread the knowledge to help people. I’ve been doing 3D printing for almost 8 years now and the space has changed so much. Just want to give people the help I didn’t have (or wasn’t around) when I first started.

😂 I know! It’s terribly long print times but I haven’t found anything that gets as good results. My longest print was 9 days! But it was so amazing. All I can wish for you is great prints and lots of patience. Lol.

Agreed. I’m not talking about getting both. It’s about the settings for each.
