I did notice one difference in the 2 profiles you used. Even though both were set to default, the overhang angle on the first (old version) was 40 and the new version was 46. I'm guessing that is probably the small difference in print time and filament used since it required less support on the 46 degree overhangs

Hi Chuck, great video! I do a lot of multiday 3D prints lately and using Cura 5.2.1 and the tree supports. My machine is using a 0.8 nozzle on these big parts. I've found the tree supports to be good but removal can be a hassle. I have been reducing the Support Flow to 80% so they are a bit thinner and easier to remove. The parts I am printing do not have and flat surfaces so I am also doing a lot of work with the Support Interface as well. With the bed slingers, somethings I want to make the wall count for the tree support 2 instead of one, but again, removal can be challenging. I am looking forward to the new tree supports making it into the new releases

I have been using Cura Tree Support Two by Thomas for quite a while now and it is awesome, it saves loads of time and filament over the previous tree supports on parts with large and lots of overhangs, I know this because I slice in both versions to see what the savings are, this is what Tree Support should have been from the start, glad to see it has now made it to an official alpha release!

I tried the new tree supports in 5.3 to print out a Xenomorph like the Prusaslicer demo. While the supports are much much easier to remove, they look nothing like the Prusaslicer organic supports. Prusaslicer looks like it used a lot less supports than Cura. I still look forward to the final release though. In the meantime, I'll keep using the Alpha release of Cura. I don't seem to have any bugs, no crashes, etc...

I'm reasonably new to 3D printing and had a horrible time dealing with supports at the beginning. Then I learned about the tree supports and it made a world of difference for me. It might just be my own personal experience but I find that the tree supports are much easier to remove and cause far less problems if I set the support density to 0.1% and use lines for the support pattern. I might also just be my preference coupled with the type of things I print. I don't print decorative or "fun" stuff. Everything I print is utilitarian in nature so I also try to print with strength or stability in mind.

Love the new supports. I heard (I may be wrong) but that the tree supports that will be in the new Prusa are by the same programmer. But that aside, yes, it's more as I can see a "fractal" driven tree, so it doesn't have to "wrap" so much on the model. It makes good use of angles for the branches and does a sturdier and more efficient wall/shell.

Intresting video, I had the same problem with tree supports in my models, removing them was another complete excercise. So after trying some different support density settings I managed to get it right in the old slicer version with a 5% density setting. Now they come off very easily and with little to no effort. Let me know your thoughts

So far I really like the Christmas tree supports, but for whatever reason, both of my PLA profiles have infill density greyed out at 20% and none of the other settings can fix it.

Is there a reason (pause at layer number) to change Filament not working followed your previous video exactly the same and when the head moves it instantly starts back to printing instead of pausing allowing for filament change.

I had downloaded and used the new version of Cura. Yes I finally found it for DL. I printed up something small and didn’t think it needed supports. Then I saw which looked like an octopus creeping up on my btt smart filament mount I designed. I guess Cura 5.3 thought on its own I needed it. I printed this illuminated village that lights up. I sits on what I can describe as an inverted plate. Talk about how “messy” the bottom of plate turned out being elevated off the bed. I wonder how this new version will do

First thing I noticed in those defaults... the 5.2.1 set the overhang angle to 40° while in the 5.3a, it's set to 46°. Could you reslice with the same angle to compare print time and material used?

Good point, but I think because of the minimun angle difference between both, there must have not much importance in the final result and time.

I haven't tried the beta builds but I also read or saw somewhere that now support blockers actually do what they're supposed to do. Can you verify this?

need settings... because man, sometimes when i'm printing at 0.2, the supports are super far away from the print, and it makes them sag... not sure which setting to adjust... before, it was always at 0.2 distance, and worked fine... but now i can't find it... also, the trunks, or branches get huge gaps, and i've had a couple of fails... instead of it printing like a tube/vase mode, it makes a "C" instead... very nerve wrecking... lol... i know it's probably a setting, but i can't figure it out...

I followed your link below for Cura 5.3 Xmas. And it took to download GIMP program. A graphic interface something. Another time I clicked it still could not see/find hyperlink to dl 5.3. So I went directly to ultimaker looking and newest version they have is 5.2.1 , which is what I already have. I guess I’ll have to wait till ultimaker officially releases it 😢

Hello. Since version 5.3 you cannot activate a support roof without activating the support structure interface. In version 5.2.2 you could still do that. Can you give me a tip on how to get it done? Or is that just a new feature :-). Greetings to all 3D printer friends

The one thing I really hope Cura adds one day is 'paintable' supports. It's honestly such an amazing feature in Prusa slicer and really the main thing that is keeping me from doing all my projects on Cura :( the custom support add on on Cura is no where near as good and you cant draw the supports on, you can only use the set shapes.

I wish they would have left the option to use the old tree supports as well. The old version while not ideal, did take up less space on the build plate. The new version is much wider as they stick out further. When printing very large things that can make or break the ability to squeeze it on the build plate.

I'm not sure how good it is to do this, but if you take the file you are trying to import, you can unzip it and get 2 text files, then edit the quality type in both files. I think that the allowed values are draft, standard and super. Then zip the edited files back up and import.

Definitely not just a change in settings. It was rebuilt completely by Thomas over 3 years. Uses less support, supports the model better and actively avoids support blockers.

Has anyone else had a problem with his 0.12 profile leaving little pockmarks? I don't know how to get rid of them. It looks like the start/end of each layer is missing, so it leaves a little empty dot.

Short answer: NEVER. It's just an example and a way to force the printing difficulty in order to know how the new supports are gonna be compared to the traditional one.

@@jhonny1392 well theoretically you might want print it at an angle to eliminate the infamous hull line if you just want an aesthetic benchy, but it also defeats the purpose of the benchy as a benchmark so you wouldn't do it otherwise

Nope I was using them in 5.3 alpha and then upgraded to 5.3.1 and lost the good tree supports. Tree supports in 5.3.1 suck

It's just used as an example to show the supports. The benchy isn't supposed to be printed with supports either.

I tried the tree supports in cura and they totally encapsulated my print like a cuccoon. Pretty much destroyed my model removing them. So I went back to simplify 3d and model was great!

I had also very bad experiences with Cura and supports. 8 hour print wasted as the standard supports (nothing changed in the default settings) were so melted into the model, that I couldnt even break it off with force. Cura sadly is not that far in development as I always hear and thought.

Same noob here, never had a 3D printer here so I started from scratch with an Ender 3 V2 Neo. I was already using the Cura alpha 5.3 and Octoprint. New tree supports are amazing! It's an easy sailing until now. First 3 weeks were rough but I'm in a comfortable place now. No big issues. If you need to change few designs to your own liking then yeah that's the cost of having customized designed, which you might not find at any store. All in all, I'm not regretting it at all. I'd like to add that CHEP was a huge help while starting up! One of the best channels, especially for beginners. His ultra fast profiles were a game changer! It cut my printing times by around %40 !!

Imo that’s part of the fun. Tinkering with it and trying to always get better. It’s a hobby. Unless you’re obviously using it for a business. I assume most of those business guys print just a few things thousands of times and have it all dialed in to look good but use as little filament as possible. With that said. It’s just a hobby for most of us

I have been spending my time designing my own prints and testing different filament types on my neo max and have only scratched the surface on tweaking slicing software. Which is probably why I'm complaining that it takes 36 hours to print 4 150mm long pipes that I am designing to decoratively cover ethernet cables I have running across my wall. So slow....!
