I remember grandma doing that. She was born in 1906, so she knew lots of things from the pioneer days. She was the oldest girl...her mother was stricken with crippling arthritis soon after the last baby was born in 1922. Granny had to run the house, under her mother's direction. Her mom died at age 53, living the last 7 bedridden in a fetal position. Towards the end, they had to feed her...and her pain so severe, she wore cotton diapers. Granny was a wonderful cook...but she preferred outside...she had flowers galore, a dozen roses, hydrangeas, a yard full of blooming glory.
@@FlutyLickHomestead I'm sure the same as your family. Grandad learned to plaster from his father, and worked in Washington, DC his whole life. So, although they lived in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, he brought home modern things.
Living in the big Northern city, we get onions in plastic bags - I take them out as soon as we get home, and put them in airy bins in the basement, which about 60 F year round. They last longer, do the same with potatoes. Those bags cause them to rot! My mom used to make several braids of onions to put in the pantry when I was farm kid, but most of them went in burlap bags and hung in the root cellar. Watching you doing your chores and putting up food for the winter brings back so many memories of my childhood days. Folks have forgotten the old ways, thanks for keeping them alive and sharing with us. Bless you and your little family.
Now that cat is a mess.LOL I bet ole Fin would have set the cat to moving if he was able to start the mower.lol Jared I got confused just a little ways into the braid when you started to add another onion. Course I never could braid anything anyway;-) It looked good when you got it finished though. You need to show everyone where you start picking them from when you want an onion. Thanks so much for sharing, you all are doing a great job around there.
Thanks, Finn would love to start that mower up and ride haha. Braiding those can get confusing! I’ll show them again sometime. We just cut any onion we want and ain’t had trouble yet with it. Thank ya for watching! God bless
Our family never did this. We would bust open a bail of hay in a bent in the barn and lay them out on it, cover them after they had hardened up. Potatoes would also go in there. I remember as a kid, my grandmother sending me over the hill to the barn on Saturday evening, for potatoes and onions for Sunday dinner. Also, around here, Dinner was a lunch and supper was the evening meal. Thanks for the video, I will give this a try next year.
The cat stole your thunder 😂 Fin is getting so big and adorable. I’ve seen garlic hung up but never onions Duh!!!! Guess I have a lot to learn. Very enjoyable video. Keep em comin
I raised three girls and learned real quick how to braid hair, of course my daughter's preferred that mom ( not me) do their hair. I'm guessing you learned how to braid from doing your daughters hair! Great video!
I trim mine down a bit and start a twine on one, strengthens it up. Castle hill gardens has good onion braids but does them in an easier way. Older gentlemen. well worth a watch.
I have seen people braid onions and garlic on the internet but you the first I think that used twine. Braiding onions is a lot harder than it looks. I have tried but never can get it to go right.
Do you have the recipe for salt pickles? If so would you mind sharing it? I have some cucumbers I need to put up, unfortunately I can’t remember how to do it. All of the old time ways are nearly forgotten. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!!!
Guys this seems like a lot of trouble. Can't you bury them or put them in a cool dry place? I know you can burry potatoes under the ground. And they will keep. Dig them up as you need them. My parents used to do that in SW Va. Not too far from you guys.
One question, do you start cutting the onions off at the top or the bottom? Seriously,I have no clue! You're gonna have to lighten up on that poor cat, Him's plumb tuckered out!! LOL
There's a better way, use panty hose... put one in tie a knot, then another and so on... hang up and enjoy.... when you need one just cut below knot, and I also cut the tops off mine.
