In the early part of the 20th century, Mrs. Wagner's Pies could be found in tens of thousands of American stores and restaurants. But did you know that Mrs. Wagner -- a real person -- started her enterprise from a modest residential kitchen in Ocean Grove, New Jersey? This video shares the sweet history of Mrs. Wagner and her famous pies, from the Victorian Jersey Shore to the 1939 World's Fair and beyond. 2015. Funding for "Curiosities of Ocean Grove: The Video Series" has been provided by the New Jersey Historical Commission.

The friends I've had on Mt. Tabor over the years love to tell the Mrs. Wagner story.

Poignant that the song mentions Mrs Wagner's pies the year the business closed. It would've been great advertising - Or did Paul Simon know this when the song was written I wonder; that those pies were already consigned to history, just out of reach to those who would hear the song and yearn for just one more; always, now, to be just a memory of yesteryear?

when I was a kid in the mid-late 1950s, at the southern border of the Kalmyk enclave of Freewood Acres in Howell Township NJ (about 10 miles due east of Belmar) there was a small building, no more than 16 feet deep and 24 or maybe 30 feet long on the Southeast corner of Hulses Corner Rd and what was then known as US-9-4 or 9/1 now simply "Highway 9" (the main road between Newark, Freehold, and the 1890s gambling resort city of Lakewood). It was clearly abandoned for a long time. While it built sort of like a home, it had no windows, and the only door was covered with heavy planks either nailed or bolted to the front wall. On the east end of the building, facing the highway, was a large black and red hand painted Mrs Wagners Pie sign that was nearly faded away. I had no idea of the Wagners connection to Ocean Grove at the time (although by the early 60s I did but I didn't know about their bakeries "up north").. I always assumed it had at one time been either a Mrs Wagner's bakery, or perhaps a waystation as many restaurants along highway 9 in the 50s had baked goods, imported olive oil, cold cuts etc delivered right to their door via Lincoln Transit or Greyhound. Now, I guess, it whatever the building was back in the day (it disappeared in the late 50s and remained a vacant lot funtil the early 70s when it was taken by the state for a jughandle at I-195...._ the sign was likely advertising along the lines of Mail Pouch Tobacco found on barns across America.

so glad that I got to watch this! When we toured the Centennial Cottage a number of years ago, I saw a Mrs. Wagner's pie pan in the kitchen and connected it with the song, but had no idea that the company actually started in Ocean Grove.. this is a Paul Harvey - the rest of the story kind of minute :) We started going to Ocean Grove in 1964 when i was 4 years old - so many fond memories of our visits there!

Who owns the rights to this brand and why has no one bought it and brought them back to life?
