Browsing on Amazon does pick up some interesting lock pick sets. This one certainly caught my eye! 😀 Let me know what you think of this kit in the comments below 👍🔐
Thanks Ash. That looks like an interesting set, and, at that price, it's perhaps worth modifying and finishing the picks. If someone bought me that set, I wouldn't refuse it. BTW, Qu is pronounced more like 'Choo'.
Pass. Nice presentation (cardboard box) but lousy items. As for the tools ... the picks are poor quality. Also, it's really a pain to have to change the handle anytime you want to use a different tool.
an alternative handle you could use is an Exacto knife handle which is lighter and should be easier to tighten. if the pick is too wide to fit just lightly sand down the slot in the handle
I carry that cheap credit card pick set all the time and have had good results. Had a look at the link and they do a six lock version (eight as two are double sided) but with it appears to not come with picks. Nice, fair review 👍🏼
Good honest review. Exactly what we have come to expect from Lock Noob. Thank you for making this video and taking the time to study your purchase, then share it with us all.
Hi Ash you know that is not a bad little kit for the money it would keep a newbie occupied for a good few hours and you never know might even take up the sport thanks for sharing well done
When I started picking, some 5 years ago if memory serves (which as a great grandmother, it often doesn't), this was exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. Even after much practice, I'm not very good, but without see-through locks and other practice tools, I never would have been able to open my first real lock. This presents as a pretty high quality beginner's kit, exactly what is needed, especially if you are like I was and had no idea of how locks work at all. The leather case is especially nice as keeping things organized turned out to be pretty important to me as I progressed to more difficult locks. I'm still not very good, but I love sport picking locks as, being disabled, its something I can actually do. P.s. Great video btw, as per usual Mr. Lock Noob ! :-)
For the price point and what it is, it doesn't seem that bad, certainly better than some of the crap out there. The pry bars and overall presentation would keep me from getting too disappointed if I had ordered it. Like you said, if you're willing/able to modify things it wouldn't be bad to give to a beginner who's just dipping their toe in locksport. Great review 👍
I actually might buy this set. I like how the book and the locks are designed to go together, this would be an excellent introduction for someone new that has absolutely no knowledge of locks. Myself, I am very new to locksport but have researched lots and learned a lot of "theory" if not yet skilled. I do have the ability, time, and pacience to modify the picks, but what I like the most is that this set comes with top of keyway tensioners. I now own a few sets of picks but none of them or any I've seen ever come with TOK tension wrenches which I desperately need for some of my locks with short keyways. But I would not call those acrylic locks "practice locks". They are way to easy to open, but they do make a nice visual aid for beginners to see how a lock works.
@@LockNoob Why do you think it's an ok-ish set? It seems to have everything a beginner would need to start a lockpicking hobby. Besides just being too thick, are there any other downsides...?
The old credit card set has helped me out in a pinch over the years. These days there's a Night Crawler set with two extra tension wrenches in my bag and coat at all times, but they surely serve their purpose when in need!
Not a bad set if your happy to spend the time finishing it Looks better than some cheap starter sets I notice you pick all your locks American style ie "pin up" is it easier than uk with pins down, do the pins feel /react differently ?
LN: "I.. guess... you c a n open locks with'em..." Rakes a Master"lock" in 2 secs. Me: *stifled laughter* I just found it a little funny and a little contradictory. Ok, we agree that the Masterlock shown is sold in the "locks" aisle so it's not a hard contradiction.
I think I would purchase the set just for that book, it did look like a well laid out and informative book from what I could see there.. Very nice review ;-)
an alternative handle you could use is an Exacto knife handle which is lighter and should be easier to tighten. if the pick is too wide to fit just lightly sand down the slot in the handle
The last two half diamonds you could shave/round down the neck, sharpen the diamonds, slope the tips and make dimple picks. Maybe curve the bigger one to make a curved flag with a sharp tip for picking pin and pin dimple locks.
I realy enjoyed this video and the nnew set of picks you ae showing from Curious Smith, they look like cool snakes and city as well as Bogata...i wish i would of nought that instead of the chinease one i modified, great video as always, cheers mate! Mal i BC
i HAVE YET TO SEE A SET WITH NICE TENSION TOOLS LOIKE THAT SET DOES,nice amount also 2 pry bars would be nice ,i only use botttom of the keyway ,yet to learn top of the keyway, because they do not make good pry bars in the chinease sets, cheers
i bought one of those credit card pick sets, you did better than me. i have never found the set with handle and tip to give me enough feel to pick well. i have never picked top of the key way, do you have any vids that would help,i would think the wrench would interfere with the pick. yhx for the video
Thanks for the review. I think it's a pass for me. Too bad, it looked like it was going to have much better quality / pick choices. Prestation, a case, a free gift, and decent instruction book are all nice pluses! Boy, it's a tough one to call for the price...
Interesting though, they sound pretty hard, based on the file sound. I am a bit surprised. They look like they are the same size as a standard craft knife. I would likely replace the handle with a plastic one for weight. Maybe the maker should also include a sheet of 220 wet &dry ; ) This looks like an excellent gift box. (duh, you said that at the end of the video) I would consider giving this to my college age grandson or my father as something to keep his hands busy. Much better than a typical puzzle, which once solved, sits on a shelf forever. I would, of course, thin and polish the picks before I would give them away.
@@LockNoob Yep! I would likely recommend the Sparrows Tuxedo as a first kit to someone who actually inquires about wanting to learn lock sport. this is due to product depth, price, and proximity in the US. I might have a different view if I was in the UK or the EU.
Great video and honest opinion. This set is very similar to the first set I got ( after a brief departure from the sport). Not this brand but everything else was included with the exception of the practice locks.
Don't sand or buff your acrylic locks (or any acrylic) if they're scratched or ruffed up. Use heat gun or a lighter to make it clear. It's how acrylic is finished in the industrial setting.
A beginner set for intermediate pickers. Is it great? No. Could it be pretty decent with a little work? Yes. It would probably be a great beater kit to throw in the car/truck.
What picking sets do you recommend to us to buy? I want to start lockpicking but I don’t want to spend over 50 pounds so do you have some recommendations?
I just think it's such a pity that lockpick sets like this don't have thinner picks. The pictures in that booklet look very similar to the 'lockpicking overkill' booklet that you can download from BBs website. I think bank managers would be a little worried at seeing an employee playing around with this kit on Thier lunch break tho. Lol, so I'm not sure of the market for this.
I think I agree with all your points. Very strange set. Maybe for someone with files, youtube and a small budget it's worth it. Apart from the possibility of a peculiar gift indeed :)
A little bit more care on quality they could have been on to a winner here,I do like the look of it as a kit to keep in the car after some sanding/filing etc, drop it by a fiver and I would probably buy one :)
It's not bad for the money but it's not good either. The handle alone would keep me from buying it. It's the same handle that an Exacto knife sports and I hate those dann things. Always come loose after a short time.
Interesting Bosnian Bill just done a review of a pick set for beginners as well - he had the better set I think These are not too bad a novelty item to someone but I agree not for serious use
US Amazon is rather reluctant to sell lockpicks apparently (most are "disguised" as hobby tools or such - presumably to avoid attention from shyster [District Attorneys/prosecutors/politicians] crusading for re-election...)
I have a sneaky suspicion that if it said sparrows you all would have loved it. And hade no problems with that you have to modify it your self. +50times the price
For £20 it isn’t too bad, but it has a lot of down sides too - I tried to keep a balanced view. If was Sparrows, the profiles and metal used would be a whole lot better, that’s for sure!
In America It's difficult to obtain cheaper full stock lockpicksets like the one here that offers full range of practice locks and picks. The one from @lockpickworld is one I have is different in the sense that it comes with bogotas and other picks full length not change heads. I had to fix that b/c @lockpickworld is spot on and it is a beginner set I regularly suggest to new comers.
Appreciate the shout out - but the pick set that comes with our was designed by me - it doesn't contain all those ussless gnarly picks you can't use, it has Bogotas etc.
