Today's kids' wash day routine was a teaching moment. My girls are old enough to start learning how to care for their hair. It's important to me that they learn how to care for their own natural hair type so they are confident managing it themselves as they grow.
Kid's wash days are a production for sure, but I hope to give some tips to foster parents and adoptive parents on the basic needs of washing black children's hair. I have listed all my fav products and tools below.

Just speaking the truth girly. A lot of foster parents would just throw their hands up and as a little black girl our hair is apart of our identity. I love that she steps away after telling her little girl how to do something, I’ve worked with parents who, while trying to help, take over too quickly and then the kid gets bored and doesn’t want to continue. They need to do things on their own, otherwise they’ll never learn. Stepping in to correct is fine but you have to give kiddos space to grow!

My friend passed away last year and not one person in her family has taken care of her youngest daughter's hair since her passing. I'm trying to learn how to work with her 4c hair because I'm definitely not adept with that texture. I have curls, but they are the deep Irish waves, not spirals and not that texture. I've tried to make appointments at local salons for African American hair, and as soon as they find out I'm white, they don't want to talk to me. Literally hang up the phone with a rude remark. *so hurtful and frustrating*. Even one owned by her own family. It breaks my heart. Thank you for taking the time to teach us how to do this. I'm going to start teaching this little girl who nobody wants to help. Her momma would be so upset knowing this was how things are because she used to do the cutest protective styles on her baby. A lot of mamas care about their kids, and will do everything for them. That is what they do. It frightens me that you say we need more people like her, because she is just acting like a woman who loves her kids. That is what it means to be a mom. There is nothing unusual about it, don’t believe for a minute most moms wouldn’t do the same, because they will and always have.
@brielovestea3501
@brielovestea3501 3 года назад
@@catherinedecelles4112 unfortunately I know many moms that are very neglectful towards their kids and dont care enough to know what their kids are having for dinner let alone how to take care of their hair. Plus, and this is what I was referring to, it is very common for those who adopt kids of different races and ethnicities dont know or make the effort to know how to care for their hair; for example one of my best friends growing up was adopted and her mom had her running around in an unkempt hair bun everyday. But of course I agree, most Moms would care and love their kids enough to make sure they are well cared for, but this is not always the case.

@@ItsDeedlebug baby chill,, check your privilege. You won’t find a single black person with naturally dead straight hair. I understand there can be some white people with curls, but more often than not the curls are much, much looser and the texture is very different (unless they are mixed, which even then they are not white so it don’t apply). hair is a big part of black culture, for you to say “bUt SoMe WhItE pEoPLe” is to erase that culture, and to erase centuries of black people styling and protecting our hair. Educate yourself babes, and listen to minorities when they’re letting you know something’s not okay.

@@Thouxanbangeo This could have been worded better. While there are many ethnicities encompassed in Puerto Rico, and by technicality 'Puerto Rican' is more of a nationality because there are many races present there, it's highly invalidating to blatantly say that someone's ethnic/racial identification is wrong. Gabriella is obviously proud of her Puerto Rican heritage and should be allowed to identify as mixed Puerto Rican without being told she's wrong. I'm floored. Seriously.

So some hints: condition and detangle before you shampoo. Once you have it detangled put in big twists like 5 max. This allows you access to the scalp without tangling the hair again. Also allows you to insure it is rinsed well. Leaving shampoo on the scalp dries it. When done shampooing you can take out twists and deep condition again. Rinse it out twist it back up. So much eaiaer to keep tangles out.

I don't even have curly/kinky hair, but my oriental mother used to be so harsh on me whenever she washed my hair as a kid. Bath-time was literally a nightmare for me, connected with lots of hurting. She always seemed to not wanna do it, act as though I am forcing her, trying to get it done really fast and not caring if I get hurt. She just ignored my aches of pain and pleading to stop. I was an only child. It makes me so happy to see you love your daughters the way you do. Being super careful and loving. Your daughters are lucky and I hope you guys have a long lifetime together!
