I began doing wash and gos on my 4 c hair during the pandemic and though it was ultimately a good experience for me to have in my haircare journey, I've noticed quite a few toxic standards along the way that are making a lot of people frustrated with their hair. This is my take on "chasing curls", wash and gos, etc.

Any standard for natural hair can be toxic to an extent because Black women are not the beauty standard. The wash and go girlies may obsess over definition, but I think it’s be a huge oversight to not acknowledge twist out girlies’ obsession with length and density - not to mention twisting is actively altering the presentation of your curls. It’s pick your poison at this point 🤷🏾‍♀️ and don’t judge others for picking a different poison from you.

I feel the name Wash & Go is misleading. Particularly if you have long &/or high density hair. A more accurate name is Wash, Do the Most (sectioning, raking, smoothing, finger coiling) Sit Under a Dryer, & Go. 😂

I agree that it's not as easy for me. I recall reaching out to a tightly curly hair specialist, and her consultation with service would cost over three hundred dollars. The wash and go is a process.

I truly do not get how a wash and go is “trying to achieve what another curl type has”. I will not get that with a wash and go at all. It would just look like… my hair. In fact, while I do think the argument can be also made for twist outs, even that isn’t really achieving someone else’s natural curl type. it looks like artificially created curls. Which is fine. It’s like a rod set or wand curls. Do you like the look or nah? That should be it honestly. Also do not get the time or money argument for the wash and go. Despite the name, it is a style like any other. Twist outs also take time (and practice and product) as would a braid out or a blowout. So, I do not understand the argument lol. People do get annoying online about what a “good” wash and go is but to me those just irrelevant commenters (as am I, to be fair). To bring it back, what is important is simply: Do you like it or nah? Does it fit your life and goals or nah? This is what matters.

I agree with your counter-argument to “trying to achieve what another curl type has” to an extent. There is no amount of product that will get my 4c curls to look 3c. My 4c curls will simply look defined. I do, however, there’s a sector of people obsessed with getting perfectly defined hair and this has caused a lot of frustration with naturals across hair types. Personally, wash and gos take more time than twist-outs from start to finish. If I want a more defined look I have to stay in the shower and that is very uncomfortable for me. The last step of setting under the dryer is a step I skip for twist-outs happily, but if I were to sit under the dryer my twist-outs still dry much faster b/c I don’t use nearly as much product. I think it varies for different people and that’s okay! Your last point is spot on! I say “do you” and forget about the rest! 🙌🏾

@@LaToyaEbonyHair Ok, I see your time point. Drying time is often how I decide whether I want a wash and go or a twist out (or other style like a bun). To me they both take energy but differ in where that energy is needed. Does that make sense? I agree that in general there's no need for every curl to be "perfect". We should give ourselves more grace! And less defined, bigger hair is extremely beautiful

Exactly I notice people gatekeeping curly/defined hair from 4c girls. There's this popular Gunna song where he says "My girl has real curly hair she doesn't use no gel" it is so disgusting the hate 4c girls get unprovoked. People really think our coils are "unnatural" & I dislike that narrative. If our hair wasn't meant to curl or be defined then it simply wouldn't be able to do that. We wouldn't be able to see coils in our hair. Your hair can either be coily or straight or somewhere in between nothing else & it seems like people think 4c is this Frankenstein hair that has no place.

So, for me, I went natural back in 07. There weren't a lot of products or information out these. I did a lazy air-dryed wash n go. I used Kinky Curly Knot Today and Curling Custard for the 1st 5 years of my natural hair journey. Now, over the next 8 years, I tried everything from oils to ayurvedic treatments to twists to tea rinses to overnight conditioning. In 2022, I got tired of everything as well as my hair was still breaking and more shedding that I cared for. I decided to go back to wash n go's and now my hair is in the best condition. It is quicker for me to set a wash n go than setting my hair in twists. I have picked up shampooing and conditioning techniques as well become more knowledgeable about products and ingredients. I started looking more into BGC, but I decided their information was somewhat basic and one dimensional. One size does not fit all. I don't use a lot of products they recommend, and I still occasionally will use a leave-in or deep condition. I expanded my research into other stylists who follow the whole wash, condition, and style routine. I picked up a lot of knowledge from them as well from my friend, who is a product formulator. I'm not big into hair typing. I would say I'm a 3c, 4a type but my bonus daughter is probably in the 4c range. The practices I picked up have translated over nicely for her hair. I don't style her in a wash n go because she is in dance, so I keep her in twists. Washing the hair consistently and using botanical products have made her hair more hydrated. Overtime her wash sessions have shortened because the hair is easier to detangle. At the end of the day, my biggest takeaway that I have learned over these last 16 years is: Shampoo your hair regularly, use ph balanced quality products and fact check information given to you.

I wear wash n gos exclusively because my hair is fine and low density so I can actually achieve a 1 hour wash day. I happen to have a defined curl pattern, maybe 4a. My 8 year old daughter has 4c hair and begs to wear her hair “curly like mine” we have yet to try it. I don’t want to disappoint her because I know that I won’t be able to make her wash n go look exactly like mine. I do point out to her that I have never achieved twists as juicy as hers. My Afro has never been as dense, my braids have never concealed my scalp. I always wanted what she has, I was kind of lost until I started to wash n go. We have to learn to love what we have because the grass always looks greener from the other side.

Maybe try to explain to your baby that her hair will be curly like her hair and not like yours, and show her different pictures and videos of all different types of curly and coily type 4 hair specifically and type 3 if you wish. The more type 4A, 4B, and 4C wash-and-go styles she sees the better she will understand that they don't all look the same but they are all beautiful.

I’m a 4c it can be achieved. Keep a spray bottle near by. I use mielle leave in after after conditioning my hair or deep conditioning. I shampoo every third wash. After I detangle, (btw I use my leave in to detangle) I use Xtreme wetline gel with the green top. I use a lot of leave in, water and a nice amount of gel in every section. I also air dry because my hair is short right now. When it was longer, I sat under a hooded dryer briefly and sometimes I still allowed my hair to air dry. I’m not really a fan of drying using heat on wash n go’s. I spray oil on it after it’s done. Yes my hair shrinks a little and there is a little crunch, but I don’t mind. It holds better. As far as the shrinkage, that’s a sign of healthy hair. It’ll fall a little and loosen up everyday. Hope this helps 💛

This topic is so interesting and conflicting at the same time. I have so many thoughts but I'll just say I wish the wng was looked at just like any other style that requires setting (twist out? Rodset, braid out). There are different techniques to set these styles as well as different ways the style can lool depending on the result you want (fluffy, voluminous, defined, chunky, etc). I think people have but too much value on one type of look which hinders us from enjoying all the possible ways we can wear our hair. Like if I want my wng to look like a fro and I achieve that then its not a fail. Same if I want a defined look. I dont think its necessarily toxic to prefer one or the other on myself. It just feels like everything we do or dont do with our hair has to go through the self hate check. I hope we get to a place where we can do whatever we want to our hair without having to think so hard about it.

I agree that it does not have to be “toxic”. In many cases it’s not! I think we’re getting to a place of true freedom with our hair and I’m definitely not here to police Black women on their preferences. I think having a healthy view like you do is the way to go!

I only do wash n go. I have no patience for doing a million little twists and larger twists just don't hold for me. I found that with twist outs I had to manipulate my hair more which I thought we were supposed to avoid. And I only use drugstore products so... I just don't find anything to be toxic. And yes I'm 4c.

One technique - Anthony Dickey Method, changed the game for me. And while he was promoting his product (rightfully so) and they were a pretty penny, the technique is what I needed. We just need to accept ourselves as the way our Creator made us and see that as the beauty standard. We all are the beauty standard, and if more of us would believe that, we'd stop being toxic about hair. lol

When I big chopped, I told myself that “God does not make any mistakes and my hair would be beautiful.” And she was as she is now. I treat her with love and she continues to flourish.

I also like the Dickey method. The first time I saw my true curl pattern was when I started using the Dickey method to bring out my curl pattern with conditioner in the shower. But his method does require the regimen of wetting your hair every day or two.

I am a wash and go only girl. I have type 4 hair but low density so twist outs make me look bald lol. Somehow the gels in wash and go stop my hair from tangling. But I will say I 100% agree with the toxicity and the expense part of this video though. What I’ve learned is to let go of my expectations and just treat my wash and goes as a quick routine once a week. So, I guess it’s an upgrade for me since I was a natural wigged up girl before and now I appreciate my own hair more ❤ thank you for making this video because I had a lot of feelings when I first started trying to define my wash and go

I still use Anthony Dickey method for my wash n go's. I don't need to use nearly as much conditioner as he suggested tho, thank goodness lol. But I still soak my hair, condtion, shake my head and dry. Changed my wash n go game forever. I couldn't do a wash in go before watching that video. I didn't think it was possible for me but I was soo wrong. I learned so much about my hair just from doing wash n go's. And I learned how to do wash n gos from watching your video, so Thank You lol ❤.

I believe the toxicity would go away if we as a community could just learn to accept what grows out of our heads, and understand that no two heads of hair will look the same no matter what style we wear. Even when people were relaxing, the hair did not look the same so why do we expect natural hair to look the same. Type 4 hair and type 3 hair have never looked the same when they are in the same style, periodt. I have never understood why type 4's had the expectation that their wash-n-go, twist-out, braid-out, or any other style would look like that of type 3. I've been doing WnG styling since 2008. Personally, I love WnG styling because for me it is easy and doesn't take a lot of time. Sometimes I use gel or foam, and sometimes I use a leave-in only. Obviously, all of those give completely different looks and I interchange them based on the look I want. Sure I shampoo and restyle twice a week to avoid unnecessary tangling, also due to having CCCA I need to shampoo twice a week anyways, and I'm sure as heck not going to do a head full of twists or braids twice a week. Yes, you missed telling me I needed popcorn at the beginning!🤣🤣

Bruh just let their hair stand up. Not only that so many people and girls especially in high school be using the heck out of that gel to slick in out before hairstyles, every time my mom would do it we ended up arguing and I was crying so when I cut my hair I don’t think I’ll be sticking it back and in braids and twists my hair is below my shoulders so it’s lonnnggg

Personally, I enjoy wearing a wash-n-go because it is easy for me, and my hair thrives with that style. It is tailbone length and kept healthy with a consistent routine and proper trims.

Honestly, I love them made my life really easy and the products last for a year (shampoo) or 6 months (conditioners/gels) which is really gd for me. There is toxicity for sure. But I wished we didn't over complicate things, wash and go is just a style. You can have a fluffy wash n go or a define one just like twist-outs. I think we forget to have fun with our hair. Wash n gos for me made my life easier. If wash n gos don't do it for you, there are like so many ways to wear our hair, find a method that you like and do that. (not relaxers, am sorry, but they are proven toxic, maybe consider silk presses).

I agree! A wash and go doesn’t have to be overly defined to be “done”. I think being a content creator I’m aware of what people gravitate toward (length, definition, density, etc) and I kinda wish collectively (as Black women) we accepted our hair in whatever way it comes out more often. I’ve definitely made peace with my hair and I think majority of people in my community have - that makes me happy! Interesting video ! I’m a wash and go girl. It’s more faster than twist for me. I think that in collective mind, wash & go creates defined curls, so expectation is unrealistic for some texture and curl pattern. It’s possible to have a really bomb undefined wash & go if it’s what you looking for…

I used to have difficulty doing my wash and go’s on majority 4C dense longer hair but I went to CiCiLove Curls in Miami and learned a ton. For one now I cowash and detangle my hair everyday, shampoo once a week. And my hair is loving loving the moisture. Wash and go’s take 30 min and are defined. My hair is growing and I wish someone would have taught me a long time ago. My hair now needs less product, I can almost just get away with a leave in and go. The definition is there. I treat my hair like my skin and wish someone would have let me know that my 4C hair just needed lots of water and to be left alone.

@@LaToyaEbonyHair yeah I do. I think there are some good things about black girls curls, but overall, they're a toxic community. Like, it's great they're stressing the importance of shampoo and not using so many products. However, the way they go on about no oils, no leave-ins, discouraging the regular use of deep conditioners for rinse-outs, and having an obsession with definition over everything else is unhealthy. Even when it comes to cuts, if it's not getting a curly cut, then you have no idea what you're doing. There's no room for individual preferences and acknowledging that works for some may not work for you, and that's okay. It's funny; they'll act like they're making it so you don't use so many products, but they frequently use 3 gels. Like c'mon lol. Anyways, yeah, I don't like gimmicks like that. It doesn't help people to appreciate their hair fully with everything it can do. Like a good wash-n-go isn't one that's super defined because there's shape, volume, movement, and so on. Having some frizz with it is perfectly fine and beautiful.

This, this, THIS. Like I understand the emphasis on quality products, but c’mon it’s not realistic to expect everyone to be willing to spend $30+ on 8oz containers of gel, $20+ on mousse, $50+ on high end shampoo & conditioner (EACH!!!), and that’s before you’re paying north of $200 for quarterly salon visits. And that’s not taking into account that these products are twice as expensive outside of the US or that curly cuts aren’t available to most black women in terms of access or cost. But you’re expected to shell out hundreds of dollars for all this and then you’re told that it’s cheaper than being a product junkie for more affordable brands. And they strongly discourage using drugstore brands because they’re supposedly inferior in quality. So I guess black women with type 4 hair whose money don’t grow on trees are SOL? Their messaging is laced with elitism, IMO.

I totally agree. I missed the section of the natural hair community era where people became obsessed with a VERY specific idea of the perfect wash n go. I was shocked when I found out about the shingling method. Here I am still parting my hair into 4 sections and applying moisturizer, leave in, and oil and THEN gel. Mousse wasn't for us back then. My hair was and still is big and fluffy and about 50% defined. I sprayed water and aloe vera juice on it to re moisturize. It was about 1 hour to do a wash n go including shampooing and conditioning. Folks will wear themselves out trying to make something "perfect". I feel like the toxicity goes deep on some of us.

Thank you. I’m 4C and it’s challenging. Wash and Go is difficult because our hair takes so long to get wet. Then once it gets wet it drinks it. The shrinkage is real. I feel like I’m not alone.

I think your hair taking a long time to get wet is more of a porosity or buildup challenge. My hair go wet a lot faster during my 30 day detox…but idk if it worth doing them for the “style”. For me, the constant hydration is great, but I prefer to do twist outs. 🤷🏾‍♀️

To each their own! I was a twist out queen on my type 4 for ten years up until a year and a half ago. That’s when I came across Black girl curls and I have even doing wash n sets ever since. If you weren’t successful with wash n sets do what you prefer but that doesn’t mean anything is wrong with what they promote.

I feel like type 4 hair is meant to be twisted and or braided (without weave). Our hair thrives in this condition. It's proven time and time again with type 4 naturals growing their hair healthy and long with some variation of these styles. But I get we want to have the same hairstyles everyone else rocks.

COME THRU!! PLEASE MAKE THIS A PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!!! When wash and go's were done even back in the 80s, it was always for people with looser curls! My daughter hair thrives in twist outs, because it holds more moisture and not the wash and go's that are not really meant for 4C hair....periodt!!

I think I’d need someone who is deeper in the wash and go community to comment on this. I’ve seen people thrive with Wash and gos in terms of hair health, but I’m not sure what the ultimate goal is collectively outside of that. Many people choose to keep this hair cut short OR embracing shrinkage makes it look that way. Brittany, I don’t know lol! I can say I love the hydration I felt when I did the style heavily. As for twists and braids-YES! it’s classic, gets the job done, and never goes out of style 🙌🏾 I like that collectively we are embracing the CHOICE to wear wngs though!

@@LaToyaEbonyHairWhen my hair was short I really enjoyed doing wash and goes in the summer. My hair was not curly not super defined but I love he look of the short/frizzy/semk-defined fro and it did not take too long. It looked really good. But starting shoulder length it's a different story when you have 4c hair. I quickly stopped that style, did not force it and focused on others. There are so many...and I always skip videos trying over and over again to achieve a perfect wash and go on long 4c hair with 10 different techniques and profucts. Sorry but that also means thaf I skip your many videos related to this content. If your goal is more length maintening length without a hassle then wash and goes have to go. I don't see anyone on social media or in my life with long hair and 4c hair thriving with wash and goes. Too much products, too much money, too much time, too much knots, for a result that is not even guaranteed and do not even last long enough.... Well at least that is too much of a hassle for me and any Black women with 4c hair I know.

I have 4c hair and have been doing wash n go's almost exclusively for the past year. My hair has felt more Hydrated and is still growing just fine. I think the real issue is people forcing themselves to be confined by what is trending or what other people are doing. At the end of the day the wash n go is just another hair style like a twist out or rod set or braids. Everyone can decide what the successful version of each style looks like on them but instead we get caught up in trying to conform with other people. If we all just do what we enjoy with our own hair the most and leave others to do the same we may actually be able to have fun and be free from all the made up rules and expectations.

Love this! I started this February 1. It is now July and every thing you said I can relate. Twist out not my fav Latoya, however I love wash in gos. I have realized the amount of hair loss I get between washes is more dangerous, toxic than I thought. As a straight natural I can manage but I’m leaving the curls for a while to regroup my thoughts. The girlies with looser curl patterns have to condition, leave in, gel each section and diffuse as well. Unless it’s going into a ponytail. I think only type one people wash and go literally and they wish they have curls. Embrace your wash and go’s ladies. Our hair is beautiful ❤

Your hair is really beautiful in the video ❤️ I had a wash n go phase, not on long hair though, but it was already too complicated. Finding gels with good ingredients that are not crazy expensive, do not flake or get sticky, applying the gel, trying to retain moisture throughout the week especially during the winter time, using a hooded dryer... I got wash n go burn out, so I just do twists out now lol

I love that your videos are always thoughtfully organized and informative. Some people might not want to admit the fact that always striving for curls and definition is toxic if that’s not what your hair naturally does. I tried a few no product wash and go days and I really liked it! Then I did mini twists with only a leave in initially then I washed it frequently and I was shocked at how soft my hair was. And I gave it water when I showered. I’m hooked. I was a product junkie so I have things that I will use but honestly it will last a very long time because I’ve come to the realization that it isn’t necessary. 💗

I love your videos... and I understand your perspective as most of us are learning about our hair and seeking information from various mediums as we age and embrace the magic of black natural hair... my 4c hair, (probably 4d lol) is done in the shower...with establishing a consistent routine, it's super easy... I use Dickey's method with dollar store conditioner, different ones, and gel with a little topping of mousse, which helped me avoid a lot of single strand knots... I thought Dickey was crazy suggesting this be done every day and I did not think it would work on my hair, I was a solid twist out girl, but my hair loves the moisture... I do this every day after my workout or every other day... my shower routine takes about 15-20mins with styling my hair... I wet and condition my hair, wash my body so the conditioner sits for a few minutes, rinse the conditioner, put on my gel which easily coats the soaking wet hair, shake side to side, up and back, get out the shower, dry off, smooth the hair in places to set the look for the day, spray with oil and go... sometimes I dry my roots a little here and there with a hand dryer, but most days, I just let it air dry... my biggest lesson has been embracing my shrinkage❤ so I am able to keep my routine quick and simple, so I look forward to wetting my hair along with my other body parts daily... blown out, my hair is armpit length, but it shrinks up around my ears... it is finer in the back, so it drops a bit longer on my neck... sorry for the length... thanks!!

Hi Toya, thanks for coming back to this. Very entertaining as true. Doubt really was the first thing I overcame and it made a huge difference in how I perceived my own hair. Grateful for that. Cost is an issue too! I am scent sensitive and use fragrance free products only. Costs have racked up. When it comes to definition, I have done work to unpack my own biases and appreciate my own hair. The reality is that definition is often proportionate to longevity of the style. And this, fuss-free longevity, is my goal (no re-wetting, no spritzing) is my goal!

You said a mouthful! Thank you for this content. I’ve definitely been challenged to embrace this 4C with a true wash and go finish. I don’t use any gels anymore for the toxic reason you stated - I was trying to get elongated curls, but that’s not my calling 🤣 now I wet my hair before bed (add a curl defining cream) and wake up in the morning, part the hair in 4 sections , and add mousse! Boom! After 15 minutes of morning styling, my hair is happy and I have some shrinkage but the curls are popping. I get more compliments with the 4C shrinkage than the other attempted styles. It does take time to perfect!

I agree that expectations could be a problem because we see someone with a loose curl and think our hair will turn out like that. I’m sure I could get a good wash and go but at this point I’m not willing to deal with the shrinkage and tangles a few days later. Plus it’s hot as crap in NC.🥵 I do think this video was very helpful.

Freedom in the natural hair community. I have been super coily for 29 years. I have worn my hair in a variety of styles. I can say that we do have to stop over thinking our hair textures. During our parents and grandparents time I understand why but present time no. I love the versatility of our texture. Our texture is by far the best of all in my opinion.

If you spritz your hair everyday you get an Afro which is fine if you don’t mind one. When it gets dehydrated wash it. I wash my hair twice a week because I sweat a lot and workout a lot and my hair doesn’t get tangled. Mine is type 4, medium density, fine strands.

This was a really good video. You spoke a great deal of truth. The hype surrounding Wash-n-go definition created an (unrealistic) expectation of curl pattern perfection that is not necessarily an attractive look……for everyone (Call me crazy, but I prefer a bit of natural frizz w/ my wash-n-go). And now it’s all about VOLUME and how to get it by Day 3 😂. To be sure, long THICK hair is Very Expensive. Shrinkage is real and caring for our natural strands takes TIME……whether that be on wash day or every day thereafter. Regardless, Ladies…..Love your hair….After all, it’s YOURS! And it’s Beautiful!!

Honestly I love wash and gos it’s the style I do probably 80% of the year. The other few months I have mini twist or maybe a blow out roller set. I have always loved wash and gos because they don’t revert like braid outs and twist outs because it’s my curl pattern. Have I had curl envy in the past? yes but so has every other woman in the planet even women with straight hair. Go watch white women, Asian women etc style their hair. No one really is washing their hair and air drying. They manipulate their hair with rollers and buy the expensive Dyson air wraps to do their hair. I think it’s the beauty of being a woman. I’ve learned if I style my hair every 5 days my hair does not take that long to do. Probably about 1 hr and a half. If I push it out until my hair is dry as a chip then it could take way longer. Keeping up on trims also makes my detangling process take 10 minutes. It has taken me a while to get to this point of embracing my hair but I love it. I can honestly say that. The key to getting to this point is embracing YOUR hair and not trying to fight it.

Greeeeeeat video ❤ I find using grease prevent knots and keeps the moisture till next wash. I recommend to follow the Anthoney Dickey method, total game changer ! My hair is fine and medium density, I dont use much product honestly. And with practice, it takes me daily 15 mn to cowash and shower.

Everything in this video was so true. I personally wear wash and go’s majority of this time as I grow my type 4a,B,C ( mostly b/c) out. I think my hair prefers it After 10 years being natural and just about 8 years of pretty unsuccessful product combinations and techniques. It’s possible that because I spray my hair with water and a liquid leave-in conditioner daily to keep it moisturized.

I have 4C hair and a warlord length, not long but not short. And it took me years first to embrace it fully. And I learned to love my hair God gave me. After transitioning for a year with crochet braids and wigs, I recently cut off all my relaxed ends and committed to wearing my natural hair. Did not know what I was going to do with it and then I ran across an Anthony Dickey video and I have been using his technique. This has given me an opportunity to learn my hair, my curl pattern, and what works for me. Just like I don’t look like anyone else, I don’t expect my hair to look like anyone else’s either and I love her. Thanks for this video and all the great content you put out!

I don't understand the hyper natural mentality. After a certain point, why use products at all? I mean, water modifies texture and defines pattern. Will water be a problem one day too? Definition is a combination of fully moisturized hair + a product that freezes that definition in place. I can go from microphone fro with my curls dryer and fully separated to defined curls clumped together real quick. Versatility is the best part about natural hair.

I think the toxicity is in your own expectations. At this point if we know that a standard was given to us, it’s up to us to adopt a beauty standards that supports us. And specifically us 4c girlies. It’s US that have to redefine beauty. The rest of the stuff, (time and cost) are truly your own decisions. With any style, with ANY THING in existence, there is a cost. If this style requires too much of you, choose something else. And lastly, as a stylist, I maintain the fact that 4c hair is high maintenance. You were born with the rolls Royce of textures. You can’t just put regular unleaded fuel in it. More effort intention and energy are required for it to look and feel its best. I know for a fact that many of us wear our hair in an unhealthy state because upkeep takes a lot of time. I’m not sure how many of us experience our 4c hair in its hydrated healthy state. But that makes curl definition drastically different even in the tightest of coils. We absolutely deserve to see our hair in that state and wash n gos allow some people the opportunity. But all in all, a proper and consistent hydration & protein routine will allow the definition to be more natural and longer lasting. Hair has to be trained. I hope you continue to do what works for you though and trust that that’s enough. Thanks for opening this dialogue!

You’re absolutely right! The many trials and errors of wash and gos have given me a better understanding of my hair. Here is what I figured out about my hair: I think I have a mixture of all curl patterns of type 4 hair (maybe more so 4a/b). I have low to medium porosity (top and sides are the former and the back is the latter). I also have high density (the back for sure, maybe the sides and top are medium to high density). My hair shrinks up, which I thought was a component of 4c hair, but in reality 4b and 4a also experience this too because it’s a component of type 4 hair, not just 4c. I wanted to experience wash and go’s because I wanted to switch up my style from the usual twists I do. Also I want to manage my shrinkage and high density because it’s a handful and I have no patience 💀Currently, I have my hair up in twists now but next time I’ll try it again to see how it goes. Aside from my rambling, you make good points. I would say that if women want to do wash and go’s, find cheap but good products and do them ever so often because you like them not because of self hate.

True 4c girl here 🙋🏾‍♀! I exclusively wear WAG's and have done so for about 5 years. My hair is much longer than in my profile pic and the goal of maintaining a WAG is how you dry it and sleep on it. I sit under a hooded dryer for at least 30 min then diffuse the roots to lock in the curl. I sleep on a satin pillowcase. When my hair was shorter, I slept on it as is. As it got longer, I started to sleep in a pineapple (a buff is the best option for that, NO BONNETS, they mess with the shape of the hair cause it's just running wild and tangling up in that thing). Now that my hair is shoulder length, I wear my hair in a low ponytail to keep it stretched downwards. It's not a tight hold, just enough to keep it together. When I wake up I take the ponytail out and let it expand on its own or let the steam of the shower wake it up. Hope this helps ☺

I'll go out with curls and white flakes is my hair and get compliments about my curls (coils) even though my hair is a mess. Ppl will also ask if it's my hair and did I do a special technique (no). Because my skin is dark, my lips are full and the whole combo confuses them. Jeeze, the subconscious effects of European beauty standards is a huge problem.

Interesting take. I think there were lots of great points finding people who’s hair is like yours but that’s still not 100% The right product paired with technique does make a difference It definitely takes time and it gets easier. However, I think the “fragility” of type 4 hair varies along with how well it retains moisture and doesn’t always mean multiple wash days or dry after 2-3 days. Toxic? Maybe people, their expectations or projections but not the style Great video overall but I’d debate some points. Your hair looks beautiful💚

It's probably not a good thing but I actually wash (style) and go. I'll wash, condition, detangle, then style with Mousse Def and leave. My hair is shorter when I get home than when I left but I don't really care! And yes, this is in the summer. Not a good idea if it's 10 degrees.

Girlfriend, I got one good wash n go on my combo type 4c and 4b hair, took pictures, and called it done. Now whenever I want to see myself that way I just use those pictures. On a weekly basis I use my revair to achieve a gentle blowout and style how I want from there.

I love doing my hair in a wash n go set. I am not obsessed with definition. I like some frizz and fluff. I go for ease which means I’m washing every 4,5 days and products that wash out easily. My scalp gets very oily and itchy if I wait any longer to wash my hair. (People, scalp is skin! If you wash your legs, wash your scalp! Wash it often!). I also band it in about 5 sections so I have less tangling the next day. I haven’t done a twist out in many many many years! I don’t enjoy doing them but maybe I will give them another try.

I think hair-training comes into play with repeat wash-n-gos too. Any style I do over and over I watch my strands start to "remember" the style after awhile and it gets a little easier to do.

1 year into my natural hair journey and have yet to attempt a WnG and have no urge to but I might try one day for fun. Reason being 1)The amount of product and manipulation I'd have to do to define my 4c hair makes me uncomfortable 2) a WnG on my 4c hair wouldn't look organized enough for me unless I get regular curly cuts which I can't be doing all that. I stick to cornrows, braids and twists.

You don't need curly cuts to achieve a beautiful wash-n-go. Just follow Anthony Dickey's Method with a little tweak here and there without breaking the bank. I use Eden Bodyworks Coco Shea Leave-In and either Weline or Ecostyler gel. All those botanical natural gels also use plasticizers and synthetic ingredients so, im not wasting my money and I get a great wash-n-go. Just master the technique and know your climate because it can make or mar your style.❤

I don’t have 4c hair. My hair is a 4a type of curl pattern. I don’t believe in the hair chart because it’s more than just 3 curl patterns in each hair type. Never been the wash and go chick it’s actually more damaging than we think. I don’t like the fact that because I do have a more looser curl pattern that most assume that my hair is easy breezy. Far from the truth and us looser curly girls aren’t just swinging our curls all day and playing in our hair all the time either😂 proper maintenance and moisturizing is top priority over defining curls daily.

After watching you & others do W&G's for the last 3 years... I just started doing them 3 months ago. I have a tapered cut, very dense & I feel like I get it now. My routine (every 6-8 days) now wet hair for 10 mins, 2 shampoos & deep condition & detangle & leave-in & thennn style with non-botanical gel (except ECO) or mousse & then diffuse. 😂😂 So no it aint really a W&G it's a wash & style & dry. It takes me about 3 hrs. And every 6 weeks I do a clay wash to fully detox. Yes products absolutely matter, but to keep my life simple, I aint doing the botanical gel learning curve 😂 Thx for the video ❤

How about the Type 4 gals that don’t have a defined curl pattern, so wash and go’s do NOT work for us. No product can give you curls or coils if they don’t exist. I don’t understand why wash and go’s became the dang on standard. You can’t embrace your own hair if the community keeps pushing one standard when we are so different across the board. That’s the toxic part to me.

You’ve actually said what I’ve been thinking, the women in the western world are the only ones that are actually concerned about curl definition and patterns. Lol here in Africa as long as we have a full head of hair that is healthy…we are good to go. It’s been so interesting to see people on the internet concerned about getting their curls defined, that is almost like people are not happy with how their hair naturally behaves. The wash & go is cool but not for me. I usually end up with a curly fro and that works for me. 😊 However, the tangles are no joke so I don't wear my hair in that style often.

When you say type 4 are you referring to 4c or 4’sin general? I have mostly 4a hair with some 3c and but mostly 4a and I don’t have any problems with my wash and go and I wear my hair like this every day. My hair doesn’t tangle and actually I only spritz it once a day when I style it. I don’t have any other expectations for my hair other than what it does. My curls are defined and it takes me less than about an hour and 15 minutes to do my hair. I don’t see that its super costly either, I buy my products and they last for about a month or 2. I guess it depends on watch person’s individual hair type, texture and system. I love my wash and go’s and for now I don’t see wearing my hair in any other way.

We have greatly varying experiences with the wash and go.. I have type 4 hair, though seemingly less dense than yours.. And my stylist now is MUCH cheaper than I ever spent going to get installs ever 6-8weeks.. I now see my stylist every 4-5months and costs $125 including tip.. My initial visit was a couple hundred dollars, but it was about 3-4hrs long and the information she provided has proven to now be invaluable.. I would have spent 10 x's that visit all over again if I'd known that it would be so easy on this side of things.. And I actually spend less now on products than I ever have, I wash and reset my hair every 4-5days during the summer months using salon quality shampoos and conditioners along side my UFD and Aunt Jackies stylers.. Takes me about 2hrs to wash, detangle, condition, style, and dry.. In the winter my sets lasts 7-10days.. But this dry heat coupled with sweat don't let that happen.. 😅 For me it wasn't a matter of trial and error, that was honestly a waste of decades.. As I'm coming up on 40 and being natural most my life, but just switched to these new tecniques after my partnering with my stylist and opting to big chop a little over 1.5yrs ago now.. I couldn't be more thrilled with the entire process of doing my hair.. Being my results now are ALWAYS consistent and predictable.. Even in high humidity.. 🤗 Though I do have to accept my hair never quite getting a "cast" in said humidity.. But the curls pop and last me a few days, so still works for me.. I keep hearing these same points being made by folks about the wash and go, and I am just happy I found my way to being taught what works best for my head of hair.. I tell everyone to partner with a stylist that specializes in the specific style you want to wear your hair, if you can find one in your area.. Literally best decision I ever made, I wish I would have made much sooner..

@@LaToyaEbonyHair I absolutely love your content and how respectfully you engage with your subscribers (me included🤗)..💖 I honestly stick by the idea that tecnique and understanding when and what products to use has been my most major key to success with my hair.. I start by resetting my hair as needed, so that's every 7-10days in the winter and every 5-7days in the summer.. I had to learn by doing, so over time and with follow up quarterly appointments I got to learn when my hair feels most hydrated and when it needs a reset.. I live where it is VERY hott with little to no humidity, so my usual set is based off of that.. When I go to places with higher humidity I adjust my set.. I double cleanse, and by that my stylist explained she meant to use 2 different shampoos.. 🤯 So I use the salon Matrix Biolage Reset shampoo as my 1st wash and then for my 2nd wash use any hydrating shampoo (Doux, Aunt Jackies, Innersense, ogx, etc. have all worked perfectly for me).. I detangle using a tangle teaser during my 2nd shampoo.. So while my moisture shampoo is in my hair I split my hair into 6-8 sections depending (so 3-4 sections on either side of my head) and use the tangke teaser from ends to root while fully saturated in moisture shampoo.. People freak when I say this but shampoo detangling has been a game changer and I've tried detangling at other stages using all sorts of other tools from the real Denman to the real Felicia Leatherwood and even my tangle teaser but it always disrupts my curls leaving them frizzy as an end result.. When I detangle during my 2nd shampoo I am left with the same curls I have when my hair is fully saturated with shampoo.. Which was always my goal, to lock in the look of my hair from wet to fully dry.. After detangling I rinse my 2nd shampoo and use a thicker conditioner.. I prefer a mask or deep conditioner over a rinse out conditioner.. But I only leave in my hair for the remaining 10-15mins it takes for me to shower depending on that day.. After rinsing out conditioner I add my 1st styler of Uncle Funkys in large sections (4-6) and clip my hair up and cover with a shower cap.. I step out the shower and do my face and body routine and let my UFD settle in.. My wash including my actual shower usually takes 20-30mins.. Then from there I apply water/UFD as needed to each section, this is again something that has to be felt and something I learned from the stylist so idk how to quite describe.. I then take each of my sections and sub section as if I was going to flat iron my hair and place my topper gel(s) (Aunt Jackies-Don't Shrink or Wetline depending on weather/time of year).. I lean towards AJ in the summer and Wetline in the winter.. Once all my hair is styled which usually also takes me about 20-30mins.. I give my hair a shake and sit under my hooded dryer for at least 15mins if I'm not going outside immediately.. But if I do plan on being outside and want my hair fully set and ready to fluff I sit under the dryer 30-45mins and then diffuse another 10-15mins slightly stretching once my roots are 90%+ dry.. Doing exactly this, which was exactly what my stylist does when she hydrates and defines the hair, has made it to where my sets are 100% consistent.. Same set every single time.. ***Edited to add that I do use hairspray/spritz when I expect to be in high humidity, I was reminded after I left this comment by the next commentors question.

@@uberhaute_naturalz84 Where I live is VERY dry, but if I go to somewhere humid, I will use a very small amount of UFD while in the shower so a couple pumps in my hand and squish it all over my entire head and clip my hair into 4-6 sections and cover with a shower cap.. Then after I complete my face and body routine I subsection my larger sections into smaller ones and apply Wetline with a bit of spritz/hairspray to each section.. I don't use anything else, because everything else just softens in the high humidity.. I was able to survive Long Beach, Miami, and NYC summers with my natural hair out.. I of course got some frizz, but nothing like what my hair used to do in high humidity.. It used to almost just melt back in my LCO method/EcoStyler days.. 😮‍💨😂

I wish that I could wear my hair in different styles, but with alopecia and the resulting level of density (as in lack thereof) I have, the wash (style and sit under the freaking dryer forever) and go is my only practical option currently 😫. I have a mix of the "type 4" textures, so some of my hair is naturally "defined" without any styling products and the rest holds definition without much effort with styling product as long as it isn't dehydrated. I don't spend time actually trying to define my coils because the more defined my hair is, the less dense it looks (and I have no patience). It looks best to me on days 3 and 4 with more volume. I love seeing people with full, beautiful hair even when it's not defined. However, I stopped watching most hair content because nearly everyone seems to either have high(er) density hair and/or a looser curl pattern...there doesn't appear to be anyone with a similar density, length, and texture to me for me to realistically look to for styling tips and it's depressing to deal with my hair struggles already. I agree that the expectations for a wash-and-go to have to be extremely defined to be "correct" are problematic. I also agree with the observation about the expensive products. I stopped buying the expensive gels (with the exception of UFD) and just use the Bee Girl custard on top of leave-in conditioner and UFD now. I also use Giovanni shampoo and conditioner instead of the more expensive stuff BGC recommended.

I totally resonate with your comments. I have an inch width of almost straight hair in the back, mid width 4a/ little 4b/ crown and forward is 4c which is where the alopecia occurred. Nothing gives fullness for me and length equity/coverage except rod sets. I’m tired of cutting it down to the alopecia to maintain a cute shape so styling is getting tougher.

Yes ma'am, folk over here with their one type, and meanwhile I have 5 types, different densities, different porosities, like just doing the whole most😮 plus I do not want to protective style or have straight hair. The Dickey method is perfect for my hair and my life style 👍🏾 I really just wash and go in 10-15 min and whatever my hair decides is what it is.
