Incredible! I gained so much knowledge from this video. It's fascinating to see the process of managing such huge logs. This video is very well-produced and clear. Looking forward to your next upload. Keep up the great work!

The best video that I've come across on understanding figured maple logs. Thanks for taking the time to educate about this subject.

I'm glad you're doing this. I was thinking about figured woods on guitars, and wondering if it was just a specific cut angle (like quarter-sawn) that gave the figured effect in the wood or if it actually was something specific that caused it. I learned both that it was a genetic possibility, and that its not a man-made effect and also that it doesn't go completely throughout the entire tree either. So knowing that, it gives a new point of view when buying things like guitars and wondering why it costs a couple hundred more for a fancier top or neck etc. I'm glad you're doing these videos. When I first searched the topic, all I found was "how to make flamed maple" as in "fake it" videos. There's not a deep selection of factual videos on this just in my basic searching. Thank you for this!

Hey man, just stumbled across this channel. Don't give up, this is still a brand new channel, and there's some genuinely useful information, that's generally only obtained by years of experience. We need more of this and I promise ths channel will grow! It's all about the video title. *"How to curly maple, where to spalted birch"* etc. I swear to God this channel will be massive if you keep it up, because *NO ONE* is sharing this content, out of fear of releasing trade secrets. Ffs, this man really knows his sht! I worked for a sawmill in my youth for nearly a decade, and I wish I would have known the information here. I've needlessly waisted so much wood in attempts to maximize my figure potential....

Thanks for the education! I appreciate videos like this that truly serve to inform, not just show someone working. Kudos! Can I pick your brain, though? My dad had his 100+ year old maple cut down, and I asked for a round from near the base, expecting to make a simple live-edge table from it. However, this round is loaded with curly figure! I had no clue! I feel so blessed to own a beautiful piece of this tree that I used to play under, and I want to do the wood justice. What would you do with a 3-4” thick round of curly maple? I’m at a loss! (I should add that it’s now split into 2 pieces, since I thought I’d make 2 tables.🤦🏻‍♀️)

Hey there. Great video, also I’m a beneficiary of much of your great wood. My good buddy Mark G is building me some guitars with some absolute ridiculous flame maple from you. Can’t wait for more videos. This video is awesome. Thanks!

Are there external characteristics you look for before removing any bark? Is flame/curl more prevalent in larger maple?
@kimball_hardwoods
@kimball_hardwoods Год назад
There are but I can’t give those trade secrets away. The curl we are after is genetic so the trees will have the curl even when they are younger and smaller. We really are always looking for the larger trees simply for the fact they may have more white figured sapwood
