Biggest log yet, Curly Maple on the sawmill!

44" maple on a 36" sawmill. This was a road trip to Barry's place in Sharon PA. He had this HUGE curly maple log I had promised to saw up for him. Had lots of help, Nate and Jonathan from ‪@BissellMapleFarm‬ were there to lend a hand. It was a good time, these guys are always fun.

Good job working out all the unique geometry problems. Next month: Middlefield Custom Sawmill takes delivery of a 20 foot diameter Redwood log and they demonstrate how to saw it on a 36" sawmill.

I just like making 12ft x 35" slabs. You see a 3 or 4" thick one and it's impressive.

The estate this came from has a lot of old imported trees some I haven't been able to identify yet. (Waiting to see leaves). So it's possible it could be Norway maple.

Please explain to me why you cut those slabs so thick. What will they be used for? Furniture? Load-bearing beams? Table tops?

Thickness is determined by width, a 20" wide slab 2" thick, these slabs are 34" wide so 3" thick because if they cup you need some thickness so you can flatten it.

@@stukaman1162 Barry wanted the slabs for tables, he's turning the estate into a school. Suppose he would sell a few but that wasn't the plan. Heavy wood tables are popular around here.
