I am growing a curry plant for the first time this year. I am living in New Zealand. So far, so good. "Colin" as I call him has grown about 30cm in about 10 weeks. I was looking to find out how to make the plant more "Bushy". You seem to answer my question perfectly. Thank you so much!
I've shared this video with so many friends of mine when they ask what I do differently but never commented. Thought I should. Great job and great tips. I have 6 plants doing very well by God's grace and bushy. Thank you so much! Wish I could upload the pics.
Very clear, very thorough and informative video. Thanks so much for sharing. I just bought my first (small) plant and want to raise it right. Wish me luck! 🙂
Thank you! Someone just gave me some cuttings (with small root). Let's hope I can grow a beautiful, big curry leaf tree. I miss cooking with them. I'm in Alabama now (from Santa Barbara), so very hot, humid summer and cold winter, so will keep In pots so I can move them. Wish me luck!
This video was an eye opener for me. I was doing exactly what you said one shouldn't. I was making skeletons and harvesting the wrong way. After watching this video I immediately pruned the tops and now I have wonderful looking plants. Thank you.
I just bought my first curry leaf tree after almost a year of keeping my eye out at a couple of Asian marts to get one...am so excited!!! and as always, your videos come in very handy. Thank you loads :)
Your tips are great. Not only my plant is bushy, I now use bushy in every sentence at work and at home that people are thinking Im crazy.. You make Bushy - a common household word.
Wow! Your prompt reply is such a relief! Even better than emergency at hospitals!😛 LOL! I am so thankful to have found you! I shall do the alcohol treatment asap! I got the alcohol and cotton swabs. I will try my best not to miss any single scale! I have noticed that this problem occurs in winter. I will try moving it in a warm and humid room in my condo. Thank you! I gather from other posts that I should cut and fertilize in March? You have been ver helpful!
someone sometimes Yes you can prune and cultivate after your last frost date (around March-April in most areas). I am glad you liked the tips. Happy Gardening!!
Thank you, brother, I feel good that I can always ask you. It is like having a great doctor at hand, who is quick to respond and prompt with communications! Please keep it up!
Omigosh! Thank you so much for these videos. My husband bought me a curry plant for mother's day 3 years ago (when I complained of the trek to the indian market to buy them) and this year was the first year I brought it inside for the winter and I have flowers! Now I know what I'm doing wrong. I'll need to repot and prune ASAP! It's about a foot tall now and I'll be sad to prune but LOVE the hints. Thank you so much!
Jessica Hilt Yes repotting and pruning it well (in warm temps) will ensure a nice healthy plant. Just don't be afraid to prune it, the curry leaf will grow back nice & fast.
Thanks for this clear video. Has helped dispel some of the fear around pruning. A couple of questions: 1. Does the curry leaf plant respond to notching? Will notching encourage branching? 2. f I cut a long branch right down, meaning right down to the woody stem that no longer has leaves, will it branch from there?
Thank you so much for the pruning and harvesting tips in your video. It has really taught me a lot, and now I can share my harvest confidently, while looking forward to new growth very soon! Cheers from Melbourne, Australia.💕 🌱
Question: what's the best way to remove the yellow/dead leaves and skeletons from the lower portions of the plant? We didn't know how to prune correctly until we watched this video, and now we have a tall (3 foot) plant that is bushy at the top but has nothing but drooping, yellowing leaves at the bottom. I'm not sure whether to pluck off the skeletons from the tree, or cut them with scissors, or what. Thanks! p.s. we are currently treating the soil of our curry plants (all indoor) with beneficial nematodes due to fungal gnats from overwatering.
Thank you so much! I was very reluctant to prune it, after I see your video, I am more confident. This current tree I had it for 4 years, all others last only for 6 months to 1 year and so I am happy about this one and was so afraid to prune it thinking I will ruin it. Now, with confidence, I am going to prune it. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this! I have a very small plant that's about a year old, and was afraid to prune it, but you've given me the confidence to try. Do you have tips on how to fertilize/what to fertilize with? I've purchased curry leaves from a few people in the SF Bay Area who have BEAUTIFUL, full, lush plants and one told me she never fertilizes, one told me that she fertilizes with buttermilk, another with yogurt, and yet another said she uses regular organic general purpose fertilizer. With all the different opinions, I'm confused about the best way to go about it.
Thank you wish I would have visited sooner. My plant was looking sad, I repotted and pruned it, and in no time gave me new sprouts and blooms flowers ❤️
Help!!! First, I avidly watch your videos because they're super informative and it's great to have the perspective of a gardener local to my weather. I live in the north part of OC (not so far from your area) and am looking for advice on my curry leaf plant. I bought it online as a tiny plant - now it's about 3 months old and 4.5 inches tall. It really hasn't changed much since getting over the initial shock of being potted. I keep it in full sun, water only when dry and finally added a little slow-release fertilizer about 3 weeks ago but nothing is happening at all. It's not growing, it's not dying... it's not doing anything. Should I be seeing any growth at this stage? Should I prune it? I was advised by the plant's seller to keep it in a 6 inch pot until it's 12 inches tall. Do you think my pot is too small? Any advice will be very much appreciated!!!
Very informative. Thanks 👍. Just one question, could you please answer? - Can we start the first pruning when the plant is more than 6 inches tall? My plant is around 12 inches tall now, from the base around 6 inches the stem is brown colour and then above that is recently grown, so it is tender and green. Yesterday I could see it started flowering at the very top.
Can you recommend some recipes which include using the curry leaf. Your helpful advice and simple presentation is much appreciated . I'm looking forward to pruning my plant using your info and watching it's progress. Thank you very much.
Here is one of my favorites www.vegrecipesofindia.com/tiffin-sambar-recipe-sambar-recipes/. Sambar is a lentil vegetable stew with a heavenly aroma. Enjoy!
My plant is about 3ft tall and now I am seeing small stems growing from the bottom alongside the main stems. Should I prune those? Is there a right way to do it?
Very informative on pruning. I have inherited a 7 year old curry leaf plant that has four trunks, many empty stems, intercrossing branches and not a lot of leaf cover. Should I give this a hard prune as I would with a citrus in similar condition. Suggestions how to rejuvenate and get it producing more leaves?
Nice video and very helpful. I have seen curry leaves plants making more plants in the pot by itself. Mine is 6-8 years old, but have never make new plants. I am wondering why ? Can you guide
At what inches do you recommend to start cutting/ pruning on a young plant? If there are no old thicker branches , can we start pruning at the petiole and it will still grow over there?
Great information. Can you please do a video on curry plant diseases(scales aphids and many more) and remedies. How to recognize it early. My plant was attacked by scales and it took toll on my plant. Was able to recue it. Wish knew it earlier to spot the problem. Thanks in advance !
I pruned my 16" curry plant and it didn't do anything, leaves yellowed and started to drop, absolutely no green shoots . This went on for about 5 months, from September till February with no shoots. Then I saw somewhere that it probably had gone dormant and needed to be severely in the spring. So a week ago, I pruned it and attempted to root the cuttings. In a few days, I started seeing tiny green shoots on the plant as well as the 2 cuttings that I am trying to root. Oh happy day, I didn't kill my curry leaf plant!
I live in the San Diego area. Followed your tips and my ~4 year old plant is finally somewhat bushy. Looking pretty hearty with lots of new growth this summer. I'm in a similar zone to you, when the plants are established do they still go dormant in the winter? Or at some point will they grow year around? I didn't get any flowers this year.. some popped up in the early spring, but I gave it a hard prune and didn't get anymore flowers. Hope I get some flowers this next year!
Question: I am from New Zealand. Its winter started here. I have got 3 cuttings of curry leaves plant yesterday morning when I brought it at my home it was nice and healthy looking. I didn't repot it straight away cuz I I wanted to buy new pots today. But before I do anything, I saw the cuttings leaves suddenly drooped in the evening!? Please note I placed the cuttings indoor, in a wet tissue in the morning y'day cuz i thought it need some water. Today I repotted the droopy cuttings anyway and gave them plenty of water. Please advise how cqn I save it. And if I done right thing? I am worried.
Hi, thanks for the video. I live in Zone 6B (US). I bought a small plant this spring and it is getting in the 50s night temperature in my place. Can I trim my curry plant or wait until spring. Thanks.
Hi ur videos are all a wealth of information, plz could u do a propagation through suckers from the mother plant, and also air layering... Or give me more expert advice on how to go about it. Many thanks
Hi, I follow all your videos. It's very informative. Need your advice badly. My friend gave me a few baby curry leaf plants that they had got from the main one. The one you called it as succers. Some of them looked good but some looked like cut abruptly though they had long roots. Would they really grow? Could you please help me with a quick tip on how to care for it. Should I keep it in direct sun or in shade?
My curry leaf tree is a few years old I never pruned it, so it grew straight up without branching out. Is it too late to cut it way down low on the brown wood so that it branches out? Thank you so much!
We have been harvesting the curry leaves from the petiole and now have just the stem without leaves at the bottom of out 2 ft tall plant. Can i still prune the steam closer to the base for it to branch out to new branches? Im worried there are no leaves like when you do?
Thank you for sharing. I have about 6 ft tall curry tree with only 5 leaf and the stem is skinny as a chopstick. I have provide plenty of water but the stem is so skinny. What went wrong?
Hi there, Today I brought a curry plant about a feet in height and I have been told it was potted about two days. I wished I listened to this video prior to buying as I'm not sure how they have planted it, whether it's a planted root or from seeds. Anyways it's outside in a pot and I'm determine to make this work. My question is when should I prune it? It looks like a little stem with couple of leave at this moment and I don't want to kill it. Appreciate your help. Thanks
My 6" plant only has offshoots in the top 2" or so with not that many leaves. The leaves are also tiny. How do you get a branch so low? Should I still prune the tiny branches?
I prune on the top of the curry leaf plant and new shoots are growing but the bottom part leaves are kind of droopy, what could be the reason, any pointers. I live in zone 9b, my plant was nice and bushier like yours but now the leaves what all i had are kind of droopy and when i took off the bottom leaves no new leaves are growing its looking like a stick with just top new growth.
Thank you for the very nice video. The curry leaf plant we have grows very slowly . Changed the soil in the pot and have it protected in northern ca during fall/winter .Is that expected in the more temperate climate here ?
listplay00 Yes the north cal temps are quite low. I suggest putting them in a cheap greenhouse for the winter - like this one amzn.to/1tWLpBc for it to survive well thru the winter.
Thanks for this video. Learnt a lot. I am in Los Angeles. Please let me know where can I get a small curry leaf plant here in LA so I can have in my garden.
Can pruning be done in any season? My curry plant leaves turned yellowish and very dull through the winter season. Now Spring has just started in Australia, wondering if i should wait for the leaves to turn green before pruning. Question 2 - Ants are laying eggs on the stems and leaves - Is there a way to get rid of them?
Your video is very helpful... i have been growing curry leaf plant for the last one year... i have 2-3 baby plants that have grown beside the main one that i planted... but all of them have leaves only at the top and just a long stem below that.... may be because i have been hesitant to prune them for fear of losing them :).... other than that is there any fertilizer that you use for the curry leaf plant ?
Hi sir👋 awesome videos. I read from a source that you can add the water that U wash your meat with. Which is a blood like residual. Is that same as blood meal and gives the same nitrogen benefit ?
Will the plant grow new branches if we prune/cut the brown woody part? Or should we cut only near or above the green color sections? You did not explain that in detail. Thank you.
Hi Sir, we live in idaho falls. for the last 5 years i am growing curry leaf plant in a pot in indoor. when i saw some videos they are getting baby plant in the curry leaf pot in indoor. but i am not getting any baby plant . can you please guide what is the secret behind it.
Awesome videos! I recently bought a curry leaf plant and potted up. i see few leaves turning blackish in the tips and few leaves started to fall off. is it due to pests? or lack of fertilizers or watering issues? any help would be appreciated. Thanks
My curry leaf plant is already almost 3 feet tall on a single stem, how should low should my first pruning cut be from the top to initiate bushiness? Thanks in advance :)
Hi, I did harvesting wrongly, I cut all the stems from bottom to top and left 2 stems on top, now as spring came they are shooting from top, No leaves or stems at the bottom. If I cut the top 3 inches no leaves will be left on the tree now. I live in East bay and it is spring here. Should I still cut the top 3 inches?
How many days it takes to grow from the cut after its pruned? and Can you suggest some natural fertilizers for curry leaf plant or any indoor plant for that matter.
Hi, I did cut my curry leaf plant at the tip. But looks like over watered. Suddenly stopped growing and leaves on the top just falling . Please suggest if I could rescue this plant, currently indoor since I live in Ohio
Do I prune the tree where the stem is still green or when the stem has hardened into bark? My first harvest/prune I attempted a few weeks ago on my 2 or 3 year old plant, and it was where the stem was no longer young and green, and no offshoots have shown up yet. Thank you for any help at all.
My friend got me curry leave plant from Florida ... now it’s all leaves have fallen off and it’s not growing at all. Any suggestions how to revive that plant? Thanks in advance.
I have a tiny stem that was brought from Sri Lanka, I was told it’s from the small off springs. After about 3 weeks finally one of them are showing small shoot at the base of the plant but the top is dry and brown. Is it safe to cut the grown stem portion or should I wait for the shoots to come bigger?
