Despite what some games like to portray the melta as, the original description (from back in RT and 2nd edition) was that the melta used a tightly focused blast of microwaves to super-heat the target. This is why the melta was so effective at penetrating armor, but had such a short range for an anti-armor weapon. 40K honestly doesn't really have anything quite fitting for a 'thermite launcher', since thermite isn't just a flammable liquid, but rather molten metal that takes advantage of it's own oxidizer to continue the thermal reaction that keeps the metal molten. You're basically burning the oxidization off of rust and fusing it with aluminum into super-heated slag.

@@TheDeinonychus Idk, it's not an exact parallel, obviously, but the effects that Phosphex has on metal are close to thermite, except with corroded metal from acid as the flammable component instead of rapid oxidization.

Also, incredibly low chamber pressure, considering it doesn't really have a chamber. And the little quarter circle cutout above the trigger is actually the hammer! It smacks the gyrojet ammo on the nose, sending it back and setting off the primer, igniting the fuel and starting forward acceleration. The gyrojet then pushes the hammer back down as it travels down the barrel.

The Gyrojet ammunition burns out after 6ft from the “barrel”. It will give a nasty bruise at the muzzle however (like being hit with a hammer). Quite lethal at 6ft however.

I had one about 40 years ago, at that time they were considered rather pointless, I think I traded an AK and a case of SKS's for it. I don't remember what AKs were going for but cosmoline smeared SKS's were about $60 each. Actually one of the major drawbacks was the poor performance of the ammo. Unlike standard ammunition, which reaches it's highest velocity as it leaves the barrel, gyrojet ammo is accelerating until the propellant is exhausted. Not that that is a long process, not at all! But, unfortunately that means in the very beginning when the rocket is first ignited, it is easily deflected. Movement of the gun, strong winds across the end of the barrel as the rocket exits... Just about anything, even an unfortunately timed sneeze by the operator. I'm certainly no gyrojet expert, but I am a master armorer and gunsmith by the standard definitions, and I owned and tinkered with one off and on for five or six years. I honestly believe that with some thoughtful modification using the improvements in propellants and metallurgy that we've seen in the last 60 years or so, the Gyrojet concept could be made a viable weapon/delivery system. It's certainly worth taking a look at, anyway!

One of the problems was that it didn't work at close range either; the rounds need some time to reach the speed required to actually do some damage. But it's not a cursed gun. Better to include the Dardick revolver in this video, now that is a truly cursed monstrosity.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it can be silent (at least much less loud), recoil doesn't dislocate your shoulder and the gun can be lighter because it doesn't have to keep that much pressure. And if gyrojet combines with exacto bullets, it might be a real thing. Of course it will all go with "is it any better than regular rifle?" but there might be the potential.

@@scienceman1837 this is why it is leass, not no recoil :) Literally in the name, which is interpreted wrong, because we use less that way as none :D Part of the thrust is not against the gun if the bullet has its own thrust when it leaves the barrel. Some recoillless even do not use barrel for recoil, it is just a tube for aiming mostly, or vent large part of the gas somewhere (there are a bunch of different designs to where)

If you're gonna recreate them then atleast perfect the original design by adding a disentigrating (words are hard) primer. This will help stabilize the round in air but will also require the gun be mounted or have a stock. (Watch the taofledermaus video to find out why)
