In this video we ask the important questions. How deadly/effective is your 9mm carry ammo? Here we use a Glock 17 firing 9mm vs a human torso analog from ballistic dummy labs. 9mm is a deadly round without a doubt and while the results are underwhelming (lol just 9mm) it still hopefully shows the ballistic capabilities of the round. As always we hope you enjoy!

When I started my LEO career we carried revolvers. When we transitioned to 9mm Glocks, the first duty ammo was 115 grain and the department's experience with that let them/us to change to 147 grain subsonic 9mm ammo...which had much better results and stopping power. Eventually, we changed to .40 department wide for duty carry. But off-duty, if carrying a 9mm, the 147 grain remained the preference.

I work in emergency medicine and I’ve seen a fair amount of gun shot wounds. Most of them are fmj from small calibers (25 acp, 22lr, 380). Those patients tend to live unless it’s to the heart, a major blood vessel, or brain stem. The patients I’ve seen with 9mm hollow points don’t live if the patient is shot in the trunk (chest or stomach). Most of the time (if not all of the time) quality hollow points pass all the way through. I personally carry Hornady critical duty because I’ve seen what it does..

so you work in emergency medicine and you have seen that the small calibers still stop and put people in the hospital yet you choose to go with a caliber that has a good chance of killing someone, for what? why is the goal always to kill? and you work in medicine where your job is to save lives. The irony.

10:35 New Jersey, in their INFINITE firearms wisdom, has banned JHPs for carry/self defense. So, subjects of that state have to either carry plain ball FMJ ammo, something gimmicky like Extreme Defender or Glaser Safety Slugs or CorBon Pow'r Ball, something frangible and hope it breaks up after penetrating organs, or (preferably above ALL aforementioned options) something like Federal's EFMJ which is basically a bullet that has a lead base, a rubber nose, and a very thick copper jacket that covers over all of it. It looks and feels and shoots exactly like a FMJ bullet, but when it hits something that soft copper jacket collapses into the squishy rubber nose section and squashes it flat as a pancake against the lead base section so it mushrooms and sorta achieves the same JHP expansion effect. It's not the best, but it works better than plain ball. I just love how Federal created the EFMJ. It's a humongous middle finger and FUCK YOU to the asinine legislators who brew up such ridiculous bullshit as that.

Hey bud, South Jersey here and you are mostly correct on that. We're allowed to use whatever ammo we like for self defense as long as it's in your home or on your property. All our lgs carry them. As far as a ccw, only retired LE and corrections can carry, literally no one else is given a ccw permit. That being said, most of my friends and a number of family are LE here and whether they can or not, they all carry jhp off duty. At the end of the day, this state absolutely despises citizens even owning firearms. They care more about criminals and people who aren't supposed to be here. Stay safe bud 👍

@Rick Christopher I'm 50 years old Rick, born and raised here and nothing will ever change. Even if we win in the SC, NJ will either defy the law like they normally do, or make the requirements worse than trying to get an FID card. You and I will be both horizontal before we can get a ccw. Our whole system here needs to be totally replaced for Jersey to ever change. For our 2nd rights as well as everything else, I'm leaving next year. This state is to corrupt, expensive, restricting, a police state etc, to waste anymore of my time here. I don't remember the black talon thing?

The Hornady did exactly as designed; penetration, expansion and mass kinetic energy dump inside the target without over penetration = dead right there. With some clothing on the torso we might see some slightly different results with the HP ammo.

I carry Hornady critical duty +p in .45 for my bear gun and Hornady critical defense standard pressure in 9 for my concealed carry and home defense guns. My rationale is that the critical duty is going to be able to go through a wall/bear skull/car door if I need it to, and the critical defense isn't going to over penetrate when I don't want it to.

@-Biohazard- due to an old pre-WW2 (literally from the Fascist era) "Public Security Law", all "cartridges in current issue to the military" (so stuff that is not current issue like 6,5 Carcano is ok) are not allowed for civilian ownership, unless they derived from a civilian and commercially available cartridge (e.g. 7,62x51 and .308 WinMag). Recently an instance said that many other calibers freely available (including the 9x21) have basically the same ballistic capabilities of 9x19, and that criminals still managed to acquire 9x19 through illegal channels, so the only people hit by restriction were lawful gun owners, so the restriction was repealed and now 9x19 is commercially available, opening a whole new market

Video idea: The affects of different rifle calibers, at a reasonable engagement distance, slicing through a prone ballistics dummy. The angle is relatively vulnerable, so seeing what carnage would ensue would be an interesting opportunity for scientific discovery. You could even slap some plates on the dummy to capture some of the energy that may be displaced.

In barr gelatin, the 9mm almost performed as well as .40cal. It was really close and comparable. When we introduced barriers such as clothing, windshield glass, and drywall, it changed the results. .40cal was almost unaffected; it was almost blind to the barriers. When I first got into firearms I bought the identical gun to what the department that I work for issues and uses. A Gen 3 (at the time) Glock 22. For my self defense ammo I started out using Federal Premium Hydrashok rounds. But then as I started buying more firearms and began doing independent testing I switched to Speer Gold Dot and Federal Premium HST rounds. With the testing that I did from multiple calibers, firearms, shot distances, barrier penetration, and everything else that I could simulate real life scenarios, I found that the Speer Gold Dot and Federal Premium ammo both performed virtually identical in every test, caliber and so on. I also discovered that they had the best results over every other JHP round that I tested. And there were a lot, in multiple firearms, barrel lengths, calibers, test mediums and so on. But then, I started testing Underwood Extreme Defender ammo and I was completely blown away (no pun intended) by the results in every caliber, firearms, barrel length and test medium. That ammo out performed every single other ammo in every test, caliber, barrel length, firearm, distance and test medium. As a result of that, the Underwood Extreme Defender ammo is all that I will use now. I still train with and buy Speer Gold Dot ammo and Federal Premium HST ammo because 2 neighboring agencies to the one that I work at use those specific brands of ammo. The County uses the Speer Gold Dot ammo and the city uses the Federal Premium ammo. There is s large pig farm about an hour to an hour and a half from where I live. The farmer is a good dude. Every now and then he will have a pig get injured or sick and it has to be put down. On a few occasions where the pigs could not be harvested we used them as our test mediums after they were humanely killed. We then x-rayed the results and could see how different rounds effect a body that yields very similar results to that of a human.

@@j.r.777 Bar-Sto is really it for barrels. Anything they’ll shoot 10mm will shoot 9x25 Dillon if you can’t get a barrel for it. Glock and 1911 is really all there is. Underwood and I think Buffalo make ammo for it still. Gonna get a barrel for the G20 here one day. I want to see it come back because no shit like 55gr bullets at 2200FPS in like a 5-6” barrel. We’re talking carrying a 10” AR in your pocket. Insane numbers. Was an old competition cartridge to cheese the power factor rules back in the day but it’s since fallen Out of favor since the rules changed. Nobody thought to use it for self defense I guess since they were just happy to have more than 6 rounds between reloads in the wonder 9’s at that point. I’m convinced high speed pistol cartridges are the way to go, like 2000fps or more. But I’m not an arms manufacturer. Look at .224 boz, too. They just necked a 10mm down to take a 55gr .223 bullet lmao

I carry the Underwoods too. My only hangup with them is that there's no equivalent training ammo that I can find aside from Inceptor which, like Underwoods, are pretty damned expensive. I really wish someone would come up with some affordable 68gr ball ammo.

@J. R.; just went to the underwood site to check that round. I think I'll pass. My reasoning is that some jackass DA is going to prosecute a well intentioned, otherwise innocent, user who has to shoot someone who is Muslim, Asian, etc basing their accusations on the " holy cross" shape of the bullet. They could accuse the shooter of being some kind of egomanical " born again Crusader" who chose that particular bullet " because it is a symbol of Christian Imperialism" yadda yadda yadda .. I've been on two juries , one an abuse case, and the other a capital murder charge.. Prosecutors who don't have a solid case and face an otherwise normal, every day working man, defendant will use any dirty trick in the book to jack up the facts in their favor. In the capital murder case , the judge instructed us to disregard remarks of the prosecuting attorney twice because she was clearly operating in another reality, fabricating new abilities for .38 LWSC. I've read a lot of Massad Ayoobs books. In many cases he repeatedly cautions people to not use gimmick ammo just for those reasons . It does look like an interesting round, but I think I'll take my chances using a good performing conventional round.

The bad guy ducks hehind a corner or door frame as you are shooting? These are things you will incounter in the home. Again, the test should include over pen on the torsos also. Does the bullet pass though the torso and the drywall behind it? How far?
@SharkByteOfficial
@SharkByteOfficial 2 года назад
@@cnutter1984 since the video you want probably wont get made... heres a hint. Most of these hollowpoint 9mm cartridges will go thru the walls clean but get clogged up as before they enter the torso causing most of them to act like ball ammo to most degree. Some will expand but obviously that is up to random chance. If a bad guy were to duck behind a wall he'd still be very dead assuming you knew where to aim. The distance of overpenetration can't be tested either because the spacing in every home is different and energy is lost significantly the more it penetrates and travels. Generally a 9mm has the energy to pass through 3 or 4 walls assuming it may hit a wooden beam here or there. This is why 12g buckshot #04 is the ideal by far for home defense.

@@MuchKoku at this point, it's basically carry what you can find. In the end, a bullet is a bullet, and pistols are anemic.

@@MuchKoku if you have good accuracy don't worry about your bullets. you could have .22's and tear people apart. it's all about your capabilities with the weapon imo.

Different rounds. Defense expands more reliably, while duty being designed for barrier penetration like windshields doesn't expand as easily or as much as Defense. I would say Critical Defense is better than Duty for most CCW applications. I would pick Duty over Defense in longer barreled handguns and PCCs though. All that said, I choose Gold Dot and HST over both because they're superior IMO and typically cost less (50rd boxes) than the Hornady.

Hornady is nothing more than marketing. If they put the money into testing and development to outperform the competition that would be all the marketing they need. Speer gold dot Remington Golden saber and federal law enforcement HST in 147gr 9mm and 230gr 45acp are proven to be the best for defense. The fancy boutique rounds are not practical.

Id love to see a video on how small caliber "self defense" ammo out of an LCP or similar does. Federal Punch and CCI Stinger vs a Federal Punch or Hornady Critical Defense 380.

I carry every day but watching these makes me want to not be out and about in all honesty. I truly don't ever want to have to use mine on someone...can't imagine how I'd feel knowing I had to use one of my PD Rounds on an actual human...but with how crazy the world is these days and that I have 3 kids and a wife to attend to...ill keep carrying to make sure when I do go out ill have a better chance at coming back (I work around Detroit...thankfully I've changed up my business model to where I stay primarily in safe areas now a days though)

It'd be fun to see you do some testing with modern loadings of .45-70 or .30-30. Particularly the .45-70....a whole bunch of people were shot with that back in the day. It'd be comical to see what a round that was regularly used to yeet bison does to one of these torso models. I know your usual wheelhouse is modern stuff but it'd make for a fun cowboy themed episode......or maybe just the ending, like you did with the .50 AE here. Chaps or bust.

I have a Ruger No. 3 government issue 45 /70. I recently bought a box of nylon tips, dude at the gun shop asked "whatcha' takin' down? A huey?" lol. Amazing rifle, but it will set your a$$ on the ground.

Hornady Critical is designed to not be a through and through, to minimize risk and damage to anyone or anything behind the target. It performed exactly as it was designed to.

Actually the Critical Defense is designed to be a effective low recoil round for sub compact carry guns. It definitely doesn't have the best penetration characteristics but that's a byproduct of the faster burning but lower pressure powder load used to produce less recoil.

Test 5.45x39 it was nicknamed the “poison bullet” because it supposdly tumbles heavily upon impact with soft targets leaving massive internal injuries which are hard and in some cases impossible to treat.
