Thank you for this lecture. I'm not a Christian myself, but respectful of real-deal Christians who are making the world a better place. This was so universal, and benefitted me greatly to listen to, thank you. When you talk about Jesus, my heart knows what you mean and can translate to my spiritual identity. Thanks for your work on understanding shame and for sharing it with us.

Can someone recommend a similar resource that does not contain religious content? Looking for something purely scientific.

Shame is not a psycho-babble construct that we need to get over. Shame is the result of our sinfulness before a holy God. Shame is only removed through the one shame bearer, Jesus Christ, who removes our shame through the atonement.

@@RL-vv7or but shame has and faith in Jesus Christ also involves our whole brain. Our left side of the brain can take in the truth party of faith, but Jesus is a real embodied person and we can't have a relationship with him, who is also full of emotions, fully man and fully God, unless we allow ourselves to feel it emotions in our body. We also don't deal with Shame only by a truth based belief, that would be denying how God has made our brains and our prefrontal lobes. Shame is a real thing that affect physical change in ou bodies and minds. A belief is only using half the brain to try deal with the issue that the cross tells us it deals with. Jesus intersects with us in relationship as we do with others to deal with taking away our emotions. You can try believing more, reading more etc, but those things don't take away a lot of our deep seated emotional pain that leads to addictions etc. We actually need to do it in relationship with Jesus.... Which involves not our left side of the brain, but also the right side.

@@KJ-lb4tj I'm sorry, Karen, but it looks like you're way over-thinking this. I'm certainly not suggesting that we discard our emotions, but forgiveness isn't that complicated. Salvation doesn't require a psychiatrist. God knows we are naturally wicked and spiritually dead in our sins. Jesus is God incarnate- fully God and fully man. As God in the flesh, He lived a perfectly sinless life, achieving God's standard of perfection because we can't. We are only inclined towards sin. As God, Jesus' life is greater than all of mankind combined so His one death can pay the penalty for all those who put their faith in Him. When I taught Sunday School, I told the kids that salvation was like "a big switch". Jesus took our wickedness upon himself (and took our punishment) and placed His righteousness on us. That's the switch. Now when God the Father looks upon us, He judiciously recognizes Jesus' righteousness that covers us. We're not really righteous, but God CONSIDERS us to be righteous in Christ. Our emotions have nothing to do with this. Neither does self esteem. We really shouldn't have any self esteem. Our wickedness caused Jesus to die the most horrible death. His death was MY FAULT... and your fault. However, we can take consolation in the fact that Jesus WILLING died for you because He LOVES YOU. God was willing to die in your place. Because of Christ, ALL of your sins are paid for. You are washed completely clean. You are considered to be absolutely sinless in God's eyes. That is the promise you can count on.

I liked this very well, untill there was too much religious mention. 🙂. I do not mind religion or religious, but I do mind it here personally.

as soon as he mentioned the upcoming election, I became disappointed. Just wish he would stick to the subject. I'll try a different source to get the information I want.

He spent less than two minutes with that as a funny opening and never mentioned it again. Good luck finding a message that caters to your narrow mind.
